What a treat. Thanks for this analysis of a great film. I dream of a relationship like this between Walter and Hildy.

Open communication. A dialog in which both parties listen and react upon the message?
When Harry Met Sally, Nora Ephron. I guess you can apply the (despite the scheming) open and honest words and maybe you find one who can then ...
They are out there but similar to tango it needs two

Love the rapid banter between Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell and Katherine Hepburn in " His Girl Friday "and" Bringing Up Baby ".
Hawks gave the audience the benefit of the doubt that they'd appreciate the actors talking over one another . He was right .
He was like a Michael Curtiz with dialogue . The movie is nonstop , but never gets exhausting .

No His Girl Friday, no MASH 1970. This is the greatest American film ABOUT America. Put it next to and among Citizen Kane, Deliverance, On The Waterfront, and Bonnie & Clyde. Stand back and get out of its way. 3rd in the series of films that invents "Cary Grant" the product and persona. The Awful Truth is the romcom movie he could have been stuck in. Then come Bringing Up Baby then Only Angels Have Wings then His Girl Friday. Now we have "Cary Grant".
His Girl Friday is all Bad Faith and Ruthlessness in the employ of Getting The Truth To The Public. Or the end justifies the means...as long as we can all agree that the Real Story Of What Happened is the Justified End.

I think this movie is greatly overrated due to it being directed by Howard Hawks. Cary Grant is also too cartoonish. I much rather prefer Lewis Milestone's THE FRONT PAGE (1931) which, being pre-Code, is more faithful to the gritty source material.
