  • SELF TEST and GPS Test // ACR ResQlink 400
The ACR ResQlink 400 GPS Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is the most overlooked piece of survival gear. For about $5 per month, the ACR ResQlink 400 should become one of your Ten Essentials for backcountry hiking and camping. The ResQlink 400 is an effective rescue device for kayakers, canoers and hunters. And unlike the Garmin InReach and SPOT devices, it does not require a monthly subscription.
In this video, I demonstrate the SELF TEST and GPS TEST.

For what it's worth, your antenna should be up for both tests. Per the manual: "To perform a basic self-test: 1. Unclip the antenna latch from the case and rotate antenna 90 degrees into the upright position..."

Not quite correct. The user guide has the procedure - which includes deploying the antenna during a basic self test. He correctly unfolds the antenna for the GPS test. The PLB has enough battery life for a monthly basic test. And for 20 GPS tests over the 5 year battery life cycle.
    The manual says:
    To perform a basic self-test:
    1. Unclip the antenna latch from the case and rotate antenna 90 degrees into the upright
position. (ON/OFF button will be exposed on face of beacon once antenna is in upright
    position)
    2. Depress the Test button between 2 to 5 seconds.
    3. A quick flash of the green LED is an indicator that Self-Test was initiated. This will
always be the first LED flash in the self-test sequence.
In addition - the video focuses on self test. But, an essential part of having one of these beacons is to actually register the PLB on the NOAA beacon website. Free, takes only a few minutes.

Thanks for the correction, you are correct. The basic self test activates the 406MHz and 121.5MHz radios. My basic self tests have always succeeded even with the antenna down. However, proper procedure should be to extend the antenna for the basic and gos tests. See you outside!
