Why You Need to Compete in BJJ if You're Unconfident

  • Is it necessary to compete in BJJ competitions? This is the question I touch on in this video.
The question comes from a younger viewer of the Chewjitsu channel who is curious about competing in BJJ. He's been training Brazilian Jiujitsu for a bit and has been urged by his coach to give it a try.
But in the message he sent to me. He stated how unconfident he is and how anxious, nervous and unsure of himself he is.
So while it's not necessary to compete. In his case my thoughts are that it's absolutely necessary for him, in particular, to compete in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition.
The reason for this has nothing to do with medals or winning or losing.
Rather it's about challenging ourselves. BJJ and other combat sports provide a means in which to test and challenge ourselves on a daily basis. BJJ competitions are one of the extremes of this.
Now let me add that Brazilian Jiujitsu is only one way to challenge yourself. You could choose other forms of exercise or art. But whatever you choose you need to challenge yourself.
To steal one of Seneca's lessons in letter 13 :en.wikisource.org/wiki/Moral_...
    He says
"This is the touchstone of such a spirit; no prizefighter can go with high spirits into the strife if he has never been beaten black and blue; the only contestant who can confidently enter the lists is the man who has seen his own blood, who has felt his teeth rattle beneath his opponent's fist, who has been tripped and felt the full force of his adversary's charge, who has been downed in body but not in spirit, one who, as often as he falls, rises again with greater defiance than ever.
So then, to keep up my figure, Fortune has often in the past got the upper hand of you, and yet you have not surrendered, but have leaped up and stood your ground still more eagerly.
For manliness gains much strength by being challenged; nevertheless, if you approve, allow me to offer some additional safeguards by which you may fortify yourself."
The way I interpret this is that we don't know who we are or what we are truly capable. And we can't be truly sure of ourselves until we've been challenged. Till we've been pushed to our physical and mental limits.
Along with this I share a story about my own youth, since our friend is a bit younger, and talk about how unconfident I was before Wrestling, BJJ and grappling in general. These things helped me deal with the fear of failure.
This video is all over the place. But I hope it's helpful!

I was the king of the white belts at my gym. I went to a NAGA tournament with the mentality that none of these other white belts can touch me. I had 3 matches that day and lost all of them! I was devastated! It humbled me and I started training harder and more often. The next tournament I did was a submission only, no weight class, in house tournament. I was the smallest guy competing out of 13 or 14 people. I beat the first two guys even though they outweighed me by 20 plus lbs. then I lost my next two matches but I was very happy with my performance. Just stick with it guys, jump in there and compete when you get the chance and it will teach you to just relax under pressure. Great vid.

I very much agree with this, it may feel like that takedown was on point until you watch the video and realize it was probably the sloppiest thing you've ever seen. In the same way that pictures don't lie but the mirror might, you can easily fool yourself into thinking your technique is better than it is until you watch yourself on video.

And you said it there, for me BJJ fills that void i have always had. Competing this guy had me in a choke and thats when i realised, this is what i need to do. I actually laughed at that moment and so did the other guy and the ref smiled a little too, bit wierd i know, but i got out of the choke and won. Keep this up, these videos help!!!

Great video Chewy. I just found your channel. What you said about your wrestling experience really resonated. Years ago, I was the smallest wrestler on my high school team (101 pounder, sophomore, didn't have to undress to make weight even). Just a couple years experience when most of my peers already had several years. I "counted the lights" many times in those days. By my senior year, I was stronger, better, and was beating consistently guys that had defeated me earlier. Felt great. This was in Oklahoma, a big wrestling state. Let's say that I never exactly set the wrestling world on fire. But...
Fast forward 5 years after high school. I found myself in Air Force pilot training. It was the most challenging year of my life. Frequently, under the pressures of the program, some really intense instructors, I would watch my classmates wash out of the program. Smart guys. 33 % would ultimately wash out. I struggled so much with the mental pressures, but one thought kept coming back to me:
    "I've been here before".
"Being here before" was those years on the wrestling mat. When i realized that, it all somehow seemed more familiar. I remembered what it felt like to be in something really hard, to not even be the best at it, and still not quit.
I successfully completed the program, and now, 34 years later, I still fly airplanes professionally.
Wrestling did that. Specifically, all the lessons you mentioned from a program like wrestling (or BJJ). You are spot-on in what you just said in that video, and all young people who have big dreams should watch it.

Hey Chewy, I've been training around 4 months now and have taken to it really well,. I've moved up to a single stripe and am super hooked.
I've reached the point where I consistently beat all other white belts and frequently beat most blue belts in my gym even being a small 145lb guy.
I know belt progression is based on time spent on the mat as well as being able to apply techniques whilst rolling but am hungry for progression,
the problem is our Black belts only come into the gym once a month.
Should I travel further to attend there main gym, possibly do some 1 on 1 sessions to showcase myself more or just wait it out?

(Why you 'CHEW' helped me decide to chose this art as one of my next big steps in life)
So I had social anxiety growing up learned modern day pick up (i say modern because the community back then has a bad rep and people still adhere to that to this day) in the last few years and fortunatly enough grew up in vegas where there are practilly infinite girls that come from all over the world. Getting laid was cool and all but what i really loved about it was the anxiety rush i got before doing it , it felt like i was gonna die lol so i threw myself in the water i would go to night clubs or venues in the day BY MYSELF to approach girls getting rejected most of the time haha (i have a girl now) but man i felt amazing afterwards whether i got rejected or got a number, instant date ect. BECAUSE i was overcoming my FEARS. The times i felt like SHIT were the times i went out and did NOT try at all i felt like a fucking pussy. Getting rejected and learning from that ,learning more about women from REAL 1st hand experience not behind my computer screen. Ive grown from my experiences (not just girls others things also obviously) and have learned that anxiety is something ill almost always have and cherish because that is my compass pointing me where to go which is to where im most scared of so pushing myself to be in uncomfortable situations to GROW to ADAPT to EXPAND and help OTHERS better themselfs because i know thatll help me too and CHEW i swear the universe keeps leading me to your videos and legit am going to join jj because of you (not overall because of you but because YOURE that last little push i needed to take the next big step to putting myself in those harsh places and uncomfortable situations to grow)which is funny because i wanted to get back to boxing super bad but lately ive been watching so many of your videos its drawing me towards JJ YOU helped me realized HOW MUCH JJ really resonates with my self principles and philosophy its a beautiful art with an AWESOME community. Yes, it's the perfect way to introduce yourself to competition, it's in a familiar location with familiar faces, it's basically randori that's kicked up a notch. You get to experience the first time jitters, you get to realize that you're way too stiff and your grips will blow out too quickly that way without having to pay anything, and you get to play with points and other rules for the first time. I did my first in-house as a one stripe within 2 or 3 months of starting because I knew I'd compete eventually. Just do it, don't overthink it, you'll never feel ready enough for your first competition so you might as well just get it out of the way.

I am 40 a white belt. I grew up in a Bad area.. So I fought a lot. I put ppl to sleep in the street. I don’t have that in me anymore. I am being pressured to compete but I don’t need to test myself. How do I say this without coming off macho? Thanks

I feel like competing is just an ego stroke. A "winner" vs a "loser". Things that dont fefine a person. However, as fickle as i may be. Competing for an acceptable amount of money is a different story. Win or lose, getting paid pays all types of bills you incur competing. I dont see peopoe winning money past local tournaments. Unless it is a natural step up to getting paid. But wtf, winning a comp should come with a pay day i believe. We accept the sign up fees, travel expenses, why not reimbursed for charrges we incur. I train for self defense and spirituality. Looking for different challenging opinions on this.

Should or can a 58 yr old like me compete in BJJ? I go to a great gym and can joke around all the time saying I am the old man in the gym. In one of the classes one of the coaches said I should compete. I was like are you out of your mind! Now you guys are seriously trying to kill the old man! Fortunately, I am in very good shape and can roll with any age group and all ok but that sounds totally crazy to me..........is it? Man, the nutty situations I can in to!

I get the comp pride and all that but I don't see myself at 33 doing it (yes I know there's an itchy one upper here with age). At competitions it seems no one tells you your chances od getting hurt goes way up. Your opponent, most likely 110% to beat you so expect a hard, fast scramble. Expect to get thrown, taken down, a fast joint attempt submission and hard chokes that may choke you unconscious unless you tap. But the guy may be going so hard with adrenaline they may not feel you tap so your life is in the hands of the ref.
So with that in mind, I will stay away from comps and let the kids who are still under their parents insurance or who does BJJ for a living do all of that.

You were the victim of a hate crime, you don't need to be polite with the "bad neighborhood, just how it goes," nonsense. Happened to me every day and nobody stuck up for me, either. I was called a "racist" for noticing what was going on.

You don't just randomly get attacked like that. You're probably racist in real life but on CZcams try to lie saying that you were attacked by racists
