  • Bucky and the 100th go for another strategic target this time, but with less forts than they'd like. In a devastating operation, only one makes it back as Bucky is behind enemy lines along with so many other airmen. Can they make it back safely or will they become PoWs? We have so many questions!

The red light means stand by for a mission the next morning. It means don't get drunk or leave the base. Get a good night's sleep because you might be dying the next day.

"Rosie" Rosenthal was well known for doing whatever he could to keep his crew moral up so him humming a song is accurate no matter how weird it sounds or looks

This mission happened during what was called Black Week. This was the worst time for the 8th Air Force. Just BRUTAL. The Munster raid ran into over 200 Luftwaffe fighters. The 100th had 13 ships...to face 200+ fighters. Those odds suck. Oh...and welcome to your introduction to Rosie Rosenthal. The man has an amazing story.

The reason the 390th plane landed there was most likely because they were out of gas, and/or had some mechanical issue. It was very very common for planes from different groups to land at whatever airfield they could find.

There were 274 B-17s dispatched for the Münster mission. 38 aborted and 182 bombed on the target. 30 B-17s were lost, 3 were damaged beyond repair and 102 were damaged.
The Munster raid wrapped up the bloodiest three days in Eighth Air Force’s history to that point. Eighty-eight B-17s had been lost in three days, nearly 900 men.

Joseph "Bubbles" Payne didnt actually die on this mission but i can see why they did adapt it so he did for the story. Also the Munster raid it is true only Royal Flush commanded by "rosie" Rosenthal was the only 100th plane to make it back from the bombing.

The main reason they 'salvo' the bombs is because the primary way for the crew to bail out is through the bomb-bay, so you'd want to drop them to make room.
Since they were close to the target it's possible they would have been armed by that point.

From the beginning to the end: Crosby is our narrator

  • @jameswg13
    @jameswg13 Před 4 měsíci +6

Also being the group Navigator doesnt stop Crosby from flying missions, he still has to do the missions. However in this case this raid was only a few days after the Bremen mission and he and his crew didnt have a replacement plane yet. Also he would be flying with other crews after this as group navigator.

It wasnt just treating officers better. The luftwaffe treated officers and NCO's better if captured. Thats why the allies deliberately made all aircrew at the very least sergeants so every aircrew were treated well if caputured in theory

The red light was to let everyone know that there was going to be a mission the next day. The bar would close at 7:30pm. Ground crews and leadership would be up at 3:30am; bomber crews would get up an hour later.

"Rosie" Rosenthal when he arrived at the 100th it was a month before his first mission they were partly forgotten about with the aftermath of regensburg. Then on a practice mission he flew so tight to either egan or clevens. Egan went to him afterwards and said i want you on my wing / as his wingman

  • @christopherhanton6611

you should read the bio on "Rosie" Rosenthal. he was a very good officer and pilot. also, that one swarm scene was done by them say 200 to 230 German planes. also, big weak point on b-17 was the front part where the pilots were at, the Japan and German found that out if they could kill the pilots the bomber would go down. also, the second raid on Schweinfurt raid,[9] also called Black Thursday. 291 B-17 Flying Fortresses sent on the mission, 60 were lost, another 17 damaged so heavily that they had to be scrapped and another 121 had varying degrees of battle damage. Losses represented over 26 percent of the attacking force and losses in aircrew were equally severe, with 650 men lost of 2,900, 22 percent of the bomber crews.
also The strategy of the Allied air forces was flawed. Arthur Harris, Air Officer Commanding RAF Bomber Command questioned the intelligence that claimed ball bearings to be vital to the German war economy. Harris refused to cooperate with the Americans, believing ball bearing targets to be a "panacea". Post-war analysis has shown Harris's objections to be correct.[12] The Germans had built up enormous reserves of ball bearings and were receiving supplies from all over Europe, particularly Italy, Sweden and Switzerland. The operation against these industries would, even if successful, have achieved little.] By 1945, the Germans had assembled more reserves than ever.

Oh, you're gonna see a DOGFIGHT alright! Just not in the way you usually expect...
Solo B17 fight flight FTW! People really take for granted, don't really consider what that big lug of a plane can really do even in a fight with multiple fighter opponents, which is amazing,
its just a matter of how well, and how boldly, smartly a pilot flies it, think of it more like the Millennium Falcon!
The B17 can be used offensively as an air to air gun platform when its on its own.

Crosby and his crew were actually on much needed RandR when the mission took place after their crash. They set up a code with base to let them know how it went. It was so bad that the base broke the code in telling crosby. Crosby told the rest of his crew and there was just silence.

The astonishing thing is that the 100th flew another mission 4 days after Munster. They got enough planes and crews to fly it and then another mission few days later.
The bombs were armed right before dropping them on the target. If they dropped them early, they were probably not armed and would not explode. They would still ruin the day of anyone they fell on.

the whole accuracy and that bombsight and secrecy around it is total BS, and a lie, you might want to watch a video about it and react to it, might be interesting. 16% of bombs in like 1000ft of the target.....
