Loreena McKennitt my favourit artist of all time. The princess of music. I have followed her for over 30 years now and i`v seen her in concert in Granada Spain (Alhambra) copenhagen...London (twice) Edingburgh. She is amazing and her songs so beautiful they just gets straight to my heart. Thank you guys for reacting to this gem. Cheers from a finn in Sweden. The drumsound is tablas.
She was excellent at putting poetry to music. Check out her "The Lady of Shallot" an abridged version of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem. Dantes' Prayer and Bonny Portmore are exceptional too. When the redcoats were marching in it's fife and drum.
Glad your Loreena journey is continuing! You got a taste of her original songwriting with "The Mystic's Dream", and now with "The Highwayman", a taste of her amazing poetry adaptations and the long, epic adventures she takes her listeners on with those. It's also quite possible you did indeed recognize the album cover, as the album includes her biggest hit, "The Mummers' Dance", which had a slightly more upbeat remix that took off and put Loreena in the Billboard top 20 alongside Celine Dion and the Backstreet Boys in 1998. I feel like there are still three elements to her music you need to experience. You've gotten her original songwriting and Middle Eastern side with "The Mystic's Dream" and her poetry adaptations with "The Highwayman". You should next experience her more "traditional" Celtic/Irish side, maybe with something like "Courtyard Lullaby". You should also see her amazing live presence via something from her Alhambra concert (maybe "All Souls Night", which fuses Celtic and Japanese traditional imagery in the lyrics with Eastern musical influences, one of her most renowned songs). And then there's her beautiful piano ballad side, for which I'd recommend the heartbreaking "Dante's Prayer". Then you'd have checked off the various essential elements that make Loreena the wonder of an artist that she is, though with still plenty of songs to still experience from there ("The Old Ways", "The Bonny Swans", "Marco Polo", her version of Christmas carol classic "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" that you could bellydance to... the list could go on for ages). Excited to see this journey continue!
Hey, Home Fries. There are live videos of her in concert that give you a sense of what's happening and show the instruments played in the background. "Dantes Prayer" and "Bonny Portmore" are my favorites.
About instruments: she is a sucker for old trad instrument from everywhere in the world and did used them and mixed them. Their are ''live'' concert on YT where you can see all of it. She plays many of them but she is fantastic pianist and play harpe like an angel.
There are many videos of her "Alhambra" concert that show her and her musicians doing all the parts. Her "Dantes Prayer is especially gorgeous if just for her voice and the gorgeous cello and violin parts.
Ah, beautiful Loreena McKennitt! Her music is magical! She is from my home province of Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦 In fact, a good friend of mine's late mum used to babysit her when she was little. I did have the privilege of seeing her in concert a number of years back. I will suggest some live performances to see the instruments. This way you can concentrate on the whole song. 😉 Cheers
Glad to hear more Loreena! My dog has a stuffed rabbit (Bun-Bun) that she throws around the house. She hit me in the back of the head with it while I was in a Zoom meeting. Luckily, I had my avatar turned on, lol! I sent in a request for Faun, the song Walpurgisnacht. Its very pagany (is that a word?). Walpurgisnacht is the night before Beltane (May day), when witches are supposed to gather and fly in the sky. Faun is known for chanted vocals and often employs the use of a variety of different instruments including the Celtic harp, nyckelharpa, lyres, bagpipes, Japanese taiko, cister, Pagan zither, flutes and Arabic instruments such as the dombra, rebab, riq, oud, darabukka and bendir.
The reason that the cover looks familiar to you is because this is the album that spawned her biggest breakout success. A remix of her song “The Mummer’s Dance” became a surprise hit that year. It was absolutely inescapable. It reached 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also had a music video play on MTV and VH1. I guarantee you’ll know it when you hear it. I actually didn’t request it because I always assume people know it even if they don’t think they do, which is usually the case. Great reaction! So happy to support you two. Also, what you heard was almost surely an electric/distortion guitar. Loreena has used it on other songs in the past. It’s her way of blending old and new sounds.
I think I’ve listened 5 times and finally heard the “car alarm”. I’m going to have to research these instruments you’ve been talking about. As for the song, what a story! It’s so beautiful, haunting, and commanding. There are no bagpipes in this because they have a droning sound under the notes. The one I did find was the bouzouki. It’s a Greek instrument comparable to the mandolin, and that’s from the dictionary. It’s been an interesting journey with this song. You’ll have to explain some of the instruments you talked about. I’m always interested in hearing about it from you! Gotta get my day going so I can meet you at 3:00! 🎶 Cyd
One of my favorite albums of all time. Look for a video --she travels with a bunch of musicians. They play a mix of modern and historical instruments. What to do now? Listen to the rest of the album. It will leave you in a trance.
I looked at the liner notes, and this is what I found. Accordion, Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin, Mandola, Snare Drum, Bodhran, Electric Guitar, Bouzouki, Mandocello, Violin. Viola, Acoustic Bass. It also listed keyboards and percussion. I might have missed something because the print was small and my eyes old.
Yup. My first Loreena`s album and instant love mode since then. It`s been long time. :) Btw. since You have two of my three: have You ever heard about Danish artist/singer Agnes Obel? "Aventine" album, song`s title "The Curse" (Berlin live session). I`m realy curious what would be Your opinion. ;)
Im a drummer and I was playing congas in school. And my drum teacher learned me to press my elbow to the congas skin (I dont know if you call it drum skin in english) to change the pitch. It can be congas here and maybe they used that type of technique? And use the palm and fingers to get that beat. What do you think? Take care! // Sara
I really only know of Loreena because I am a total fan of Alien and Blade Runner so I watched the movie Soldier with Kurt Russell because it is unofficially meant to be in the same universe. Anyway the movie is kinda bad but I was absolutely mesmerized by a segment of the movie that used her song Night ride across the Caucasus so I had to look it up.
OMG, what a poor reaction video! There you two are sitting, listening to one of the most amazing songs by one of the greatest voices of our time, and the only question on your mind the whole time is what is the name of the drum that can be heard somewhere in the background. Boom, boom, what is that? Boom, boom, what could that be? Now that's called music, a musical masterpiece, not the sum of boom, boom, beep, beep and car alarm!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We are sorry you didn't get the experience you hoped for on our channel, and wish you the very best finding one that is a better fit. All our best. ✌🏽🥷🏻

“Courtyard Lullaby” is such a gorgeous piece! So calming. Definitely a favorite of mine.

Also “Caravanserai”. The live version is incredible.

Alhambra is a must concert to see , the music the location and of course the beautiful singing of Loreena makes it simply perfect in my opinion
Mummer's Dance and The Standing Stones are my favs of hers
Irish pipes use a bellows for the air source. That’s what you saw.

L0VE THAT SONG! “Halloween” is also a very good song of theirs.
All these years of listening to Lorrena McKennit and I never thought that sound was a car alarm. Now I won’t forget it! 😆
Sorry Sally!!! It's just the first thing I thought of. ❤️🥷🏻😭
@@musikbyjh Whoa, somebody’s car got hit by lightning in the parking lot of the market I go to. 😳
@@sallyintucson Oh No!!! Hopefully they were ok!! Reminds me...I need to get out and start photographing these storms!! (safely, of course. lol)

Thanks for confirming the electric guitar. People are always surprised when it shows up on her songs but they always work amazingly well.
@@DrockDrack Violin is probably Hugh Marsh. He does electric violin for Loreena's albums. Very distinct.
@@normdeplume1178 Yes, he’s phenomenal! I love seeing him on her love tours.
I can also recommend Gaelic Storm, especially for pub songs!
@@chericeevans9990 Love pub songs! And really love the Clancy Brothers!
Glad you went back to Loreena.
Maybe a contest for Studio name - my suggestion: The Diamond Jungle
How fun, Dianne!!! LOVE your name suggestion!!
Good song for clearing out your tear ducts!
Troy plays Irish bagpipe with Nightwish , so you’re right about that , he mostly sits on the right side of the stage (from the public point of view)
As I recall, I believe you were right a tabla.
i like Loreena Mc Kennit many songs awesome
For drum, it might be a larger hand drum but I do not know.
If you liked this song, you might try Kate Rusby with Drowned Lovers and The Goodman (funny)

How about zutomayo after a long time? hypersomnia" takes you to the bottom of the ocean.
Recommended skelling song by lorenna
Also most likely the drum sounds might be a bodrhan
Almost positive the drum is the bodhran.
Maybe a bodrum
