  • A Black Northeastern woman, artist and activist. In the current Brazilian context where, in a nauseating way, these predicates are used to diminish and, above all, exclude the other and delegitimize her voice, Lia de Itamaracá, at the height of her nearly 80s, is the vibrant voice of resistance and enlightened existence. Her weapon (and her soul) is ciranda.
Knowledgeable of work and art, the artist, who started working as a child and never stopped, whether working as a lunch lady in a public school or acting on the screen as an actress, including her featuring in the award-winning Bacurau, Lia brings in herself the transformative force of ciranda.
Lia also started working as a social entrepreneur, promoting actions to
improve the living conditions in her community.
Attentive to environmental issues, the artist collaborated with the development of periodic cleaning activities on the beaches of Itamaracá, raising awareness about the impact caused by garbage on the oceans.
