- Motorola Edge 40 unboxing and hands-on review including a camera test, gaming with Genshin Impact and a full specs/features tour. The Moto Edge 40 is almost £300 cheaper vs the Pro version here in the UK, yet sports some respectable camera tech, dependable performance and some slick design.
So is this one of the best mid-range stock Android smartphones? Well, the Motorola Edge 40 will have stiff competition in the Pixel 7a next week, alongside rivals like the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G. That camera is dependable as long as it's not too dark, but is it a Pixel beater? Unlikely. But the Moto Edge 40 can blaze through games like Genshin, while the pOLED display is a 144Hz stunner.
I like Motorola's clean UI, as well as the skinny design (even if it is a 6.55-inch phone). Sadly there's no headphone jack or expandable storage, and for battery life there's better options.

Got mine for £400 - love it. The screen, 256 GB storage, the speed, the cameras, 5G speed... amazing stuff. I want a matching Edge cellular watch.

Theoretically, Lenovo is in the mobile market since they own Motorola. Phone companies like Motorola, Asus and Sony have underrated phones that may include features that people missed on their latest phones like the headphone jack

I have bought the Edge 40 for £300 (22/02/24), reduced from £529 chuffed to bits with it. The lack of a headphone jack is not a problem, i use a Type - C connection ear buds, cost £4 e-bay, works just fine.

Moto Edge 40 looks like a deal. Such a good camera support and good display as well with the Dimensity 8020 processor.

@@flint9889 US doesn't have edge 40 series, only edge and edge+ and whatnot which are much more expensive. The edge 40 ultra or something will be released as edge flagship in US

2 android and 3 year security is still kind of disappointing. You can still get that with most other manufacturers last generation flagships from a year ago. If Motorola wants to grab premium level buyers they have to offer longer software support.
I get it but I work in a phone retail store and most customers don't care about software stuff, they just want a lot of memory, and nice design
Should be a minimum of 4 years for software and 5 years for security. Oneplus and Samsung in the Android space are already offering that. Pixel offers 4 years of security updates and 3 years of software upgrades, I think. Samsung and one plus are top selling brands for a reason.
@@LTEAndroid true, the majority of smartphones user don't really care, in fact they don't even know software updates even existed, we are a small group of people in this vast pool of users that actually cares about the update, and i do think people should know all the bits and details, but sadly enough, and truth be told most people only care about camera performance, how good/attracting the design looks and the bigger storage the better so they can store more of that selfie and videos they capture, and I'm talking about open camera and shoot, no pro mode and 4k recordings because that's not a thing unless you're a content creator or just like to stream
We moto users would still be happy if moto provides those promised updates in time. This is may 2023 and many moto phones including some of their flagship line-up haven't received android 13 yet.
@@justanotherviewer1282 They don't care when they buy the phones, but they will notice and start caring eventually when they don't receive the latest Android OS or get hit by a malware or security breach due to lack of security update. Not providing software support is a short sighted move, it is to grab low information aka new buyers in this market. But to build brand loyalty you have to capture the new buyers so they come back and spend their money the second time around on your brand too. The very buyers that may fall for Motorola first time around are the exact same buyers Motorola loses to Samsung and other major brands in 3-4 years.
Motorola Edge 40 is packed well with the pOLED display, 144Hz refresh and a cool dimensity 8020 chipset!

This phone seems like a steal. The Edge 40 Pro is almost £300 more expensive and the difference in spec' doesn't justify it at all. I think I'll be getting this one.

Motorola seriously needs to up its game with some cool accessories like tablets, watches, bands, and TWS with unique features. Plus, we need the Moto360 back and a killer Razr. Provide 4 years of Android updates and improve their camera and video software without charging extra for it at the beginning. I know it might cost a pretty penny, but it'll be worth it in the long run. Or continue to be the manufacturer of the Razr V3 and Moto's G.
I wanna see something like a near 6 inch redesign of the iconic RAZR I if you remember that one? And to see a new Motorola tablet but with the same slanted edges of the Xoom 2 lineup.

Considering the Motorola Edge 40 with the Mediatek Dimensity 8020 processor for its gaming capabilities. Any opinions on its performance?
If you want some serious gaming then don't go for it you can go for poco f5 or iqoo Neo 7 (these are rebranded version of their respective model of their parent company Xiaomi(poco) and Vivo(iqoo)) if any one of those models are available then go for those those are best gaming phones for that price point but if you are in for just some casual gaming then this is the best deal which coverup all other aspects too.
You can play any game in this phone but just for 3 hours if you play more the phone will start to overheat to 45-50° that's what I saw in another review

Finding good cases is very difficult for Motorola phones. The day Spigen or some other good case companies starts making cases for Motorola, I can consider Motorola then.

Just saw an Edge 30 256gb/8gb version for 300 euros. I think previous model is a bargain for it's price compared to the new one that sells for 480 euros right now. Maybe it worth the wait maybe not and than again for it's price you can get even an Edge 30 Fusion. I forgot, 5 years of security updates are worth considering

There are some major caviats in edge 40 for example non-flagship processor , heating and throttling issue in vegan leather version, and no significant display protection (some people had scratches in a day uses too without screen guard)
@@madhusudantiwari3232 Frame is only for cosmetics, it's not a critical part of smartphone. Battery - yes, but runtime also depends on power draw and software efficiency not only battery capacity.

I like both Honor 90 and Motorola Edge 40, what's your recommendation? Camera and battery are important to me. I honestly don't like Stock Android because the look is simple and classic. 🤔 I am not sure what is better to take. The complaint is that Honor does not have any protection.

The Samsung has longer support inc updates but the UI is messy IMO compared to motorola.If they are similar price i would go for the A54 as much longer support, proper dual sim, expandable memory and better camera setup not to mention the samsung has GG protection...the edge 40 has zero protection! No wireless charging and much slower charging on the A54 though..always tradeoffs but the Samsung has a flat screen which is a must for many buyers especially those that have suffered with curved screens before.
