►WHAT IS SAKUGA? // WHAT IS A SAKUGA MAD
Sakuga (作画) literally means drawing in Japanese. But Sakuga also means "artistically impressive animation".
MAD stands for Music Anime Douga (Douga means video in Japanese). It's the same as an AMV. Sakuga MADs are compilations of great animation made to collect, celebrate and appreciate the work of animators.

The original FLCL's animation was so good that it's hard to believe it came out in 2000
What are you talking about, the 90s was the peak of handdrawn anime, and FLCL was made by a dream team of animators. By comparison, the new ones are a crappy cash in by a bunch of no names.

One punch man, space dandy, and mob psycho 100 are some of the best animated shows of all time, you think that the webgen animators that carried the shows could possibly have dome what they did in the 90s?
It's fine if you prefer the general aesthetic of 90s shows to modern shows but saying that the best pieces of animation were made in the 90s is a completely untrue statement.
@@user-pw7lz7tw1h Oh please, you know who carried all 3 of those shows you just named? Yutaka Nakamura. The most amazing actions scenes in those shows? That's ALL him. He's no webgen animator. He's old school and has been around forever. He probably mentored and inspired many webgen animators with his crazy fx recently, but he's also a guy with fundamentals (just look at sword of the stranger), which so many (and I never said all of them) webgen guys lack. Besides, these webgen kiddos have their own style, and I did say they're crazy good at fx. But really, you're just cherry picking. If you can't see the average decline, increase in off modeling and just sloppy drawing in anime AS A WHOLE over the years, then that's on you.
3:56 is one of the most incredible pieces of hand drawn animation i've ever seen

@@mist1858 monogatari as a whole was very experimental even when they didnt have too much money to put much into animation they were really creative with the direction and scene composition to make up for it

FLCL was Such a pivotal staple near the beginning of my animation career! I can't believe it's been 20 years since I used to play all six episodes on loop with my little portable DVD player in my Nickelodeon office back in 2001!

FLCL = My Early 2000's Childhood retrospective of the real world contrasted with the insanity and rough real world reality of emotional escapism.
This show just oozes passion in such a tight package, it also helps that gainax got so much money from Evangelion that the animators produced such nice stuff
I'm hoping they didn't opt to embezzle those profits that time either.

I personally liked the sequels, though -the final one hit close to home for me. They're not as good as the original -I don't think anything could top that (the price for starting off on top) -in comparison, but that doesn't mean they were bad. 😉

Imo flcl progressive gets too much undeserved hate, the show is beautifully animated, and contrary to what some people say, it does experiment a lot with animation
That’s so true honestly. It definitely feels like it tries to ride the highs of nostalgia a little too much, but watching this video made me realize how much beautiful work was actually there
Yeah but the plot is just a shitty rehashing of the original? Did you understand the message it was trying to say? And if so how was it different from the original?
Although I’ve got to give Alternative credit, story-wise atleast it had a different message it was trying to get across and it wasn’t bastardizing the original in any way. Even still, neither of the sequels will ever top the first FLCL.
