  • They wanted a train server, people said that it would be impossible let's pull the the hype train out the station because the community m managed to do it. Also a big thanks to G for providing some extra cinematic footage for the end of the video.

    So essentially, what you've proven here is the following:
    1) Trains as a concept are capable of being stable enough to be (somewhat) reliable in Space Engineers. A well-maintained train and track should have few issues clang-wise.
    2) Rovers are faster, but more hazardous and less efficient when moving large amounts of cargo, even with a dedicated and developed road and bridge-system.
    As someone who loves the concept of trains alongside cars and space ships that Space Engineers provides ample opportunity to delevop and design, this is a great proof of concept. Thank you.

      I can totally imagine running a monorail on the moon along with some "artificial difficulty" like deep but big ore deposists and/or Industrial Overhaul. Doesn't even have to be as fancy as this awesome build here. You could get a nice and reliable automated transport between 2 points using vanilla GPS and some timer blocks.
      If I remember correctly, there are some old 60s paintings from artists depicting space fantasies. One of them included a moonbase with a monorail connection.

      I'd disagree with being more efficient overall. The issue here is the time and effort to build the trains and their track, and the maintenance thereof when they inevitably spark. I built a nice working passenger tram in a base of mine once. It's just a straight-moving vehicle but there's never any sparks despite a respectable speed. You can sort-of get working trains in SE, but they're just not practical compared to properly designed rovers and roads, particularly large-grid rovers; you could stick large cargo containers on an IMDC Rhino and it'll haul like nobody's business. I should know; while I'm not the original builder I completely gutted and redid it to bring it up to modern game standards, impressing even the original author (I do approved upgrades for a lot of his stuff).

    Such a great concept. This could totally be expanded upon and made into a server that runs for longer. Now if only the track blocks were fully released and more cost effective...

      Also if we could have curves + actual rail wheels that had a similar fake magnet that stairs do so you *nearly* couldnt fall off

    Please give us more trains. I'm sure it would be a massive pain, and a bit of a departure from the charming cooperative vibe of this project, but I'd love to see some war trains and railway combat. Maybe a pre-built series of rail lines that connect to a bunch of resource nodes, and several factions are tasked with gathering those resources over the course of the server?

    as someone who spent the week long iteration laying most of the red yellow and blue lines i can say that the job was a bitch and every train used had a short lifespan before clang took hold and threw it off the rails but the actual track only took 48 hours to get a segment of rails up and the swap from blast door to light armour blocks sooo many derailed cars and near falls nightmare fuel that one.

      Makes wonder how big a train would need to be to have it “self print” the rail. Sorta like the way some modern rail lines are built

      @@shahbazfawbush the 1x1 work as the propulsion while also not making much bounce the side 3x3 provide grip keeping trains locked down the issue is grid collisions on light armour perform alot stranger than blast door so swapping them where the blue line meets red and yellow meant that it would be an issue unless the blue line was made blast door

    I think trains would be good for some sort of automated, bulk transport system compared to individual rovers or conveyer systems.

      It’s a cool idea but it would need to be really complex in order to deal with corners and strengths properly. I don5 think drone trains are going to be a thing for a while

    I feel like part of the reason the trains would fall off was the shape of the track, iirc the monorail track looks more like a T than an I so the cars completly hug the track.
    Other than that if you guys decide on making a train server I feel there should be some sort of limit on tunneling to avoid it turning into a subway system.

      The big advantage here is that Space Engineers does not have the concept of "joint strength" like Kerbal Space Program physics -- when a grid is connected, it's rigid and the only way to "break" stuff is to damage the blocks themselves (this was probably an intentional optimization). This means you don't have to worry about structural support as each piece you build is basically a single solid.
      It also means you have to build the track bends like you see here -- having blocks that are *slightly* offset in angle and placed at just the right spot relative to the previous block, which means you have to aim very carefully to do it (or use a mod/script that places the blocks) because it's not possible to attach a block to a grid at a random angle.

    The reason I love trains in Space Engineers is simple: Value. The concept of having an extremely fast railway to and from a location is invaluable when you can run into serious issues with spaceships. Especially when the railway goes through caves or otherwise travels through regions too treacherous for my dingy mining ship to safely travel through.
    Great work. I wish that trains were truly viable. My dream for a unified space system must sleep for now, but it will not die.

    I think a train server would be extremely cool. Maybe make it so players can not use Conveyor Tubes unless they are touching a refinery or assembler, and it forces the use of trains or rovers for transportation of cargo

    i can easily see trains outfitted with sensors and control blocks being automated to transport large shipments. I know there are scripts that automatically flies drones from point a to point b, but man, i just love trains.

    Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress could be a decent idea to utilize. Essentially have established bases along the way and have players move cargo (resources, vehicles, etc.) to the required locations. Having interior turrets or the occasional gunship and attack the trains could be a fun slice of fun

    I think a “megacorp” server could be pretty cool, a planetary buying hub where people buy vehicles designed by one of the “megacorp” factions, where players can either join the megacorp as a miner, builder, or corporate mercenary, or could stay independent and sorta do odd jobs for factions or even raid their supplies. There would be major resource nodes that corporations would fight over, and whichever faction has the highest sales at the end would win.
    It’d be so cool to see customized versions of mass produced fighters used by bandits in an attack on a corporate supply convoy, or each megacorp coloring purchased vehicles in their own color scheme. Might not be the best idea, but that’s a server I think could be fun to watch (especially with your size of fan base). Almost a sorta borderlands setting.

    This sounds like a good idea it's like transport fever in space. You could have different mines only mining one certain resource. And the final location would either be a city or a space port that sends the resources to space.

    Railroad Tycoon: Space Engineers Edition.
    Every time you do these server tours, I ask myself, what are these crazy mofos going to come up with now?
    And for the next iteration of the server, consider allowing flying vehicles, but only of the construction and resource gathering type.

    To be honest, the Alien Planet (unreasonably hostile for rovers) + prebuilt (invulnerable) tracks in dedicated directions, + some form of Safe Zone that is the only option for refining things at the end of the prebuilt tracks could give some amazing opportunities for making, maintaining, and raiding trains, especially with a no thrusters restriction.
    Maybe added set dates where the players are allowed to do x, like base raids are not okay until the last day(s) and just full on heavy industry (tm) until the date of war.

    Loved the video @LastStandGamers! Can't wait for the next video man! This is a really nice First Try at having Trains in Space Engineers, though I think there's some Understandable Progression that needs to happen before Players can use the Actual Large Grid Rail Blocks.
    • 1). Establish a Road Network.
    • 2). Mine Resources for a Monorail.
    • 3). Build Aforementioned Monorail.
    • 4). Use both Roads and Monorail Networks to Mine Resources for the Construction of a Proper Railway.
    • 5). While the Resources are Being Gathered, Start Planning out where the Railway Line will go.
    • 6). While Planning out the Railway Lines, Players will need to Research ways on how to House and Maintain their Steam and "Diesel" Locomotives as well as the Rolling Stock like Freight Cars or Passenger Cars as well as Facilities like Shunting Yards, Train Stations, Railway Crossings and Even Switching Yards with Plenty of Switch Tracks and even Turntables.
    Once the Players have the Resources and Equipment Necessary for the Construction of the Railway, They can Go ahead and Start Laying down the Tracks. If War should ever Break out, various areas of the Railway Lines would be Vital Targets in something like a Strategic Bombing Campaign like in Europe during World War Two. The Trains would need to be able to Move Men and Material to the Frontlines, so anything like Bridges or Train Yards or even Train Stations are Vital Targets just like Factories, Airfields and Large Cities.
    With the Plane Parts Mod and Jakaria's Water Mod, The Players would be able to go all out with their own War Machine for their Factions.
    What do you think about this Aaron and LSG Crew? Would you be interested in seeing a Server with Trains, Tanks, Vehicles, Aircraft and Various Ships with the Water Mod and the Plane Parts Mod? Would you like to see or Make Bombing Runs on Enemy Infrastructure? Or Do you think the Whole Server would Klang out to a Crash?     Comming from the Mortal Engines video i instantly had to think of the game Transartica when you were talking about suggestions: A map on Triton, frostpack weather on full, and a giant train moving between a few small, well protected (because of wild spiders and wolves) settlements, each specialized on one kind of ressource.

    Trains that lead around and through the planet, other lines that lead out into space to stations and possibly to asteroid fields and other planets. Though I'd recommend having the track blocks set to indestructable for ones that go into space and such.

    Combination Land, Sea, and Sky server? With encouragement towards crafting stable supply lines and proper colonization of the planet. Trains would be an excellent utility on such a server, especially if rare ore deposits happen to be situated within areas of treacherous terrain.

    I would 100% run the Snowpiercer concept, where the Snowpiercer main train is a central objective that runs around the planet and the players have to compete to link up with Snowpiercer to gain resources to survive it's revolution. They can't stay attatched for too long or otherwise they will have to stay with the main train for a full revolution, which means other factions can steal their stuff etc

    This kind of concept for a server for SE would definitely be a big game changer. For someone who hasn’t played SE before would actually really enjoy this in the future. I may see some issues with this kind of setup, one would be the Voxel count and block limit would be put to the test even on a planetary scale in SE some were it could crash the server or cause accidental terrain resets. The other would almost be the same for the first one would be lag by the voxel and block count could cause a game crash. I can definitely see this change in the future with changes to the voxel limits change to almost infinite and increase the block count for entire sub-grids to handle rail networks that encompasses an entire SE world be incredible I would love to see that happen

    For a train server, the map should either be incredibly mountainous or an archipelago. The first will make road and bridge building slow and costly, incentivizing more robust combined systems rather than individual ones. The second will create two separate networks: one where rovers speed along shorter bridges between islands or on ferries while larger train bridges run across the water.

    A lovely concept. I'd suggest if you make it a snowpiercer, that 1 set of players build cities around the world and the train builders will need to hit each city. the goal would be to build a train network that goes to each city and around the world.

    Would love to see them do a switching yard with passenger cars and freight cars. And a two track "Main line". It's a wonderful proof of concept that could seriously be expanded on.

    I could imagine gaining the physic engine you could use gravity and flip the mono-train to hang upside down using not only gravity but now having almost a full lock on the rail, now using 3/4 the rail instead of 1/2. Then keeping it in a straight line would help limit any problems with turning and speed, but then implementing a faster turn table would enable faster and safer speeds at the cost of no independent cornering. Would allow for more cargo without worry too! and you could run a parallel system running basically 24/7 with multiple trains rotating around the clock. Man I can't wait to buy and build a pc when I get onto a new job soon, I'm gonna play so much of this game xD

    War Trains. Have a few interconnected rail lines, people gotta build trains and keep moving and all, then have bases stashed across the planet that are very important, like they spawn resources and are the only way to get resources. Then make an objective for a team to capture like 10 other team's trains and connect them up to the victor's train.

    I remember that building a rail and train system is some of the most fun I've had in ages in this game, sadly I had started this way back when the wheels and planet driving was still very wonky and due to how they reworked the wheels physics my project got canned not too long after. Also something I've always wanted to do but never managed to find a server to do it as many of them reset planet voxel after a while to prevent lag nor the patience to do it alone, is a purely underground headquarter where the only way to the surface is some main processing/hangar bay kind of area where many tunnels goes toward specialized complexes or certain mineral mines. Wanted to do this ever since I built some corporation styled base filling some moon crater (landing pad in middle, building surrounding it in uneven circular complex following the crater rim) and I adored how it looked, really does wonders to the spirit when your base look swole and isn't just a hole in the ground.

      With that said, it could be a fun challenge to make a underground only colony on some oxygen-less planet (maybe make custom planet since I think some minerals spawn very rarely, if at all on unmodded game planets?, alas last time I played rocks weren't air tight, but if Keen did patch that up since then it could be feasible. Like peoples would need to be careful where they dig as not to cause massive decompression in the mines by breaching the surface, or end up making big open underground areas from carving paths for trains, ships or vehicle alike. Make me want to pick the game up once more, sadly I don't believe I'd be able to stick around unless its a server where I talk with the peoples playing often, I can't do it alone anymore, its just tiring to make something only to know no one will ever see its splendor (god knows how much minecraft shit I have that could make anyone awestuck, but can't be arsed to make video or post pic about it who knows where)

    PvP Wild West kind of thing. Group of miners/resource transporters, then a group of lawmen protecting the trains, and lastly a group of bandits trying to steal the cargo.

    Add in "pirate" NPCs and armored trains with weapon systems become a thing too. Especially if personal jetpacks, grinders and drills are disabled, making facilities the only places able to build vehicles and other items.

    my hats off to them for building these rails. it is a huge time investment to line them all up properly. glad to see the monorail design is still king.
    part of me is sad though. this would have been great to reintroduce the armored train from way back when aaron.

    Trains are highly effective IRL makes sense they could be useful in space engineers too.
    Just a matter of needing them which the base game doesn't really have.
    Maybe if there was large pockets of single resources with a bit of distance between them having a train system would make sense to save resources and if it was set up really well you could probably have them go without the need for someone piloting them.

    A single car traveling on its own seems dominant in the environment your server is creating. The most successful operation will be running multiples of these systems as they prove the lowest risk to clang. Basically you’re synthesizing a hyper loop lol

    Id honestly love to see a PvP thing going on with railway trains, kind of a mix of metro tank cruisers and or heavily armored ww2 trains with the engine in the middle of the entire thing instead of at the front

    There was an interesting mod I played with which was Maglev tracks. It seemed quite good and I was able to make long tracks to destinations and go at fast speeds too. Only issue was the brakes. If you did not brake at the right time, you would come crashing into your station, so I had to find out the optimal braking distance through trial and error and eventually set up a decent maglev train. When I saw a sign I made to brake, I would put the brakes on and safely stop at the station. The maglev train had to use Atmosphere thrusters to move.

    I think if you had a server with jet packs disabled, limited thrusters, and very hilly terrain, you could actually make trains a desireable way of travel

    Perhaps you could include some preexisting long tracks between the key areas that are always at ground level so that they are cheaper to use but could be easy targets for a hostile npc faction or hostile player faction. This could get players to make armored trains. It would also include the choice to build their own safer railway( which is expensive) or build more defendable trains with weapon platforms( which can become expensive)

    You know what would be really cool? A space elevator. What is an elevator if not a vertical train and then you could have lines go from staroid to asteroid. Trains would need new designs to account for the lack of gravity, but they could finally get resources like uranium.

    This might be worth revisiting now with warfare 2, the idea of infantry launching rockets at a railway bridge in an attempt to raid a trains cargo is super cool to me. Maybe make it a cops and robbers type thing.

    I love the concept of a train transport network in a server. When I (Eventually) get SE I think I'll give the concept a shot in a single player world. I think the concept would work really well in a 'hardcore survival' type of setting, like Splitzie's Survival impossible series.

    imagine if there was a large rail running around the world with a
    massive armed train full of valuables going around and players could try
    and intercept it and pull a heist on it like in western movies. Maybe
    use a rovers and hop aboard or maybe give chase by putting a train of
    their own on the tracks. The wheels and track are made invicible through
    admin magic, but the body is simply heavily armoured, so you can't stop
    the train and have to get the resources out while moving.

    I have a suggestion for a server that is entirely underground (obviously not possible but have the atmosphere start at the ground or under the ground) and everyone has to work together to get a base setup or something

    i would think a cross between 2 worlds would be in order.."the underground" was a server I actually got to enjoy for a time. It involved creatures they had to fend off and such as well as shifting gravity in some areas. Why not make that so trains became the only way to traverse the gravity intensive landscape of the underground..would be quite a fun challenge especially with creatures attacking train systems. They would have to create defensive trains as well to protect transport trains.

    I always wondered if you could counterbalance the wheel springs with the connectors "magnetic" attraction to keep a train centered. But that would also be really expensive and in the end you basically have the train for show only because you can use the conveyors in the track.
    Maybe with the new hinge really use the connectors magnetic effect to pull along the train.. but i think the possible spacing when angled wouldnt be close enough.

    OMG yes! a snow piercer server where they have to live on a giant train and it cant go below a certain speed, where players will die if caught outside for more than 5 minutes. the players have to survive for a week or a month or something. they would have to come up with ways to get resources really quickly while the train went slow and you would need something that prevented players from just leaving the train permanently in a rover.
    You could use the safe zone area from the weapons core championships, except the safe area is connected to the mega train!
    They start with a decent amount of recources but will need to get more after a day or two

    Maybe try to make a train server where everyone's bases are on different sides of the planet, then make a huge tram network in between each base. Thing's like hidden bases, secret track switches. Then set up pirate/bandit factions, then everyone can play good-old cops n' robbers.
    idk, just throwing out ideas.

    war & industry server, There are battle zone pylons where battles take place, treaties keep people from committing violence anywhere except these arias like a reverse safe zone.
    Rule 1, you must have a moving vehicle in a warzone to claim or contest it. Each warzone Is linked to a Resource depot on the other side of the planet. Any faction that contests a warzone may source resources from the Depot, Rule 2 anywhere there is a refinery is also a warzone until the refinery is destroyed. Around each depot is a Safezone DMZ to prevent cheeky players from doing naughty things.
    block changes
    Jet engines and hydrogen engines use 100x resources to force their sparing use.
    Solar panels produce 50x more power but cost 50x the resources to save on PCU/lag.
    Refineries act as antennas and produce a signal at 15km designating the warzone.
    one of the resource depots is on the moon with a space warzone and it is overstocked with supplies to justify costly Spacewar,
    Each depot is restocked with resources each day split evenly among the respective factions.

    How about a water server? Theres an anime called "Gargantia on the verdurous planet", its based on a world where humans left earth bc of natural disasters, and now they fight space aliens, a lone gundam pilot gets knocked out of An engagement and thrown off course toward an unknown planet, and with no way to find home, he has to make do and keep the fleet he stays on safe since the world is flooded

    How about multiple factions with competing rail networks, and each team has one saboteur at a time, who can attack the enemy's tracks & trains, who can only attack at night, until the trains and tracks are capable of defending themselves against more lol. You'd end up with camoflauged and armored/weaponised tunnels everywhere, could make for some interesting chase scenes.. people may even tunnel under the tracks waiting lol

    For future ideas I’d like to see an sorta industrial revolution style like setup when the steam trains changed the world I’d like to something like that happen and have some kind of technological changes with the help of new mods would benefit in the future to the point where in the future where the server can handle trains across multiple worlds

    I'd like to see you tackle longer trains. I'm curious how long you could get before clang becomes a serious problem. Trains may be slower, but I feel like trains of a significant length could still result in a larger overall throughput.

    Train server:
    There are random facilities of different types all arround the planet. They are:
    1. Refinery (no storage)
    2. Assembler(no storage)
    3. Iron mine
    4. Nickel mine
    5. Silicon mine
    6. Rare minerals mine
    -Gold
    -Silver
    -Cobalt
    7. Dangerous minerals mine
    -Magnesium
    -Uranium
    -Gravel
    8. Ice mine
    9. Hydrogen plant
    The idea is that players will have to create themselves a railway network in order to effeciently retrieve resources. Resources are used for events. Events have symbolic prices. In order to become server champion the winning faction will have to hold the most prices. In addition to events factions can winn prices for longest railway network (km). Itteration ends with a railway expo where plenty of prices are up for grabs to keep things interesting towards the end.
    Specail itteration rules(needs testing):
    -Max train small grid block limit 5000 blocks.
    -Unlimited static grids. (Make sure they are named)
    -Players are not allowed to build assemblers and refineries.
    -Max non train small grid block limit 500 blocks
    -No large grids
    -No static grid can be bigger than 1km by 1km(for server performance)
    -All rails have to be [nozone] and named

    Something I would like to see if you ever make a train server is only rovers and trains but the trains would be armored trains like the ones from ww1 I would love to see trains going around the server in heavy armor and armed to the teeth that is a concept that I think is cool.

    mind making an experiment in which you made a incredibly large city?
    im very aware the limitation of the pcu, but... there has never been a city sized emporioum in space engineer.
    was thingking the like of that everyone gathered in one area, and they build a giant city together.
    the gathering concept if the recources can be altered, is to have them very far away from one or the other, but extremely abundant in a single pocket.
    there cant be industrialization without big cities
