  • In this video we do a real world GMRS antenna comparison using a 3dB ghost antenna and a 5.6dBi whip antenna. Testing and comparing General Mobile Radio Service radios and antennas is a great way to find out what works best in your area. The GMRS radios we are using are made by Midland Radio and TID Radio. Come along for the ride and watch us do some real world GMRS Two-Way Radio testing.

Thanks for commenting. Yeah the 50 would be great. The 275 is good for moving from vehicle to vehicle. Once I get a repeater setup we will be in good shape.

Wait a minute, your friend with the hand held radio was sitting inside a vehicle for the first part of the test. Doesn’t being inside a vehicle greatly affected his ability to penetrate. I hope you repeat the test with him on the ground.

Yes. We showed that in the video. Our test was very bad and then he got out of the truck and we were able to continue the test. Eventually getting another 11/2 miles out of our test with him out of his truck and me switching to the big antenna.

Did you notice if the cars A pillar affected Ghost antennas receive and transmit quality when the person you were talking with was miles behind you? I am considering the Ghost antenna for a vacation road trip. I like how unobtrusive it is. Great video. Can’t wait to see what repeater setup you decide on.

I didn’t notice it but I was also trying to keep that from happening so I was always facing towards Bob for the test. I feel like the performance of the Ghost antenna would work well for traveling. With a fender/ hood mount like mine I think the A pillar will be a concern regardless of the antenna compared to a roof mount.

YES, the A pillar will affect TX performance of any antenna, including the ghost ones. Any output energy radiating in that direction is reflected back towards the antenna and theoretically could burn out your transmit power amp transistors. It's best to give an antenna a flat surface in every direction to create the optimum propagation of a signal. (move it farther down the hood) I know it "Looks Nice" near the A pillar, but it all you want is something nice to look at, take a picture of it and staple it to your dashboard.

He really is using a TID. I'm not sure how the programming works but he is using the TID radio. It's the only radio he owns.
