Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

@@peteparker7396WRONG. Do your research. The three top European farming magazines do a comparison test of lots of brands each year. And guess what. Jd gets beaten each year. And it's always fendt.
@@davidthorne2129 well guess what? We ain’t in Europe. So there’s that, and I can drive 4-6 hours in any direction from my farm and you might see one or two red tractors. Maybe. Fendt are short wheel based, can’t get parts, junk.
@@peteparker7396 You can say that and there is people and their 4-6 hours drive without seeing any green tractors at all. Both brand are making good machines and both can brake down within 10 hours.
@@peteparker7396 LOL Fendt is hardly junk. Canadian farmers buy and use a ton of Fendt stuff. If John Deere stuff is so good, why does literally every farm channel have videos with JD stuff breaking down what sure feels like way too often. Given the prices, the stuff should be prety much bullet proof, no?

I have worn wide brimmed hats for decades. Much better than skin cancer. I also find it feels cooler than a ball cap, less direct sun/heat on you.

Skin cancer vs. good looking hat/cap, no brainer. Melanoma is no joke. I ain't no cowboy but I wear the hat my ears and face love it.

I hated breaking in new shoes years ago. But then one time I bought shoes at a reputable shoe store instead of the farm store. The sales rep suggested that I let him measure my feet with one of those contraptions. I discovered that I'd been wearing g the wrong sized shoe for many years. Ever since then I've had no discomfort when I get new shoes.
I think that isn't appreciated by some. I have noticed the same thing about running shoes!

Those Rock guards on the back of the freight Shaker you are going to have to reverse those from quarter to half or full. Or you're going to wind up with a lot of rocks in the back window. Trust me I have replaced about 20 to 30 windows on the back of our Mack and freight shakers.
I noticed that pretty quickly. It sure throws a lot of rocks back around!

There are still a few around, but most are used for replanting!
Down here in the SW a lot of guys go with the big traditional Spanish style straw hat. Probably not big around there but they do work well. Casts a huge shadow on your whole face and neck and breathes well. Can also put a neck loop on. Might want to try that.
I've noticed that. This hat has been nice so far, but I might try out a straw hat too.

It sure would be interesting to devote a video to talking with your family (wife, sons, grandparents, uncles, etc.). Like to learn more about them since they are mentioned by you periodically in your videos.
The only ones that could provide much entertainment would be my Mom, her family, and my dad/uncles. My dad's parents have been passed for many years at this point, sadly.

If all of your trucks are fine right now, you might be very thankful 5-10 years down the road that you did buy at least one new truck. You don't want all of the payments coming out at the same time.
It seems like the list of things needed just grows longer regardless of what you do...just hope to stay profitable long enough to afford some of it!
We had our farm in sothwest iowa near councill bluffs...i am surprised iowa produces more corn than any other state
Iowa is a sizable state with little ground that Is unsuitable for farming. Illinois has some extremely unproductive and non-farmable pockets, especially in the southern portion!

My heritage comes from German/Dutch, so am blessed(?) with light skin and I know what you mean about the sun's dangers to people who have light skinned parents.

Everyone has different opinions on it. We are bought into that 99 at such a cheap price that it would be hard to get rid of, especially considering some of the other junk that we haven't get rid of yet.

How many gallon tank do you have on there I see Larson Farms they’re trying out a sprayer if you want to videos at all and they don’t like a sprayer like that because the tank is too small how big is yours I think 1200 gallons 1200 gallonssorry about that my phone screwed up once a while😊
It is 1200 gallons. That is about the standard size for a normal self-propelled sprayer. You can get 1600 gallon ones as well for a nice premium. If you have the extra tractor floating around, having a big pull behind sprayer with a huge tank would really let you cover the ground fast. Loading the sprayer is the slowest part of the process. Some herbicides also perform better if sprayed at a higher rate of water per acre, which is much easier to justify if you have a huge tank. I think a self-propelled sprayer is much easier to operate, and it doesn't require an additional tractor in the busy season, so that's why many farmers go that route as opposed to the pull-behind. I would say that it is a 100-1 ratio here for self-propelled sprayers to pull behind!
Id drive that truck or the old truck . The A/C would probably be high on the list to fix on all the trucks

I have the largest head possible, and I am not kidding. I have to wear baseball caps at the max settings.
I buy a new pair of steel toe boots every 3yrs and im a welder. It's hard to find comfortable steel toes.

Was wondering since you have your co-op side dress for you, would it be cost effective to purchase a side dressing rig and perform that duty your self ?
If we were to buy a newer bar, I would guesstimate that it would be a 6-7 year return to purchase and operate our own bar. I don't really know what they cost to operate other than tractor/fuel/depreciation. I am sure that wear parts on the bar aren't cheap. My dad and uncles just don't want to screw with it, so I don't have the ability to justify that myself. There is a lot more that I could do if I could justify my own full-time employee. I actually would like to switch to a Y-drop system on the sprayer to replace our current post nitrogen program, but there are flaws to that as well. It would be a much quicker ROI. Once we get to a place where dad/uncles are needing to retire/quit/etc.., I think we will take that stuff on ourselves to help justify the cost of full-time employees.

I have never seen a roller in Central Illinois in my life. Larson's are farming in essentially an entirely different universe than us in terms of ground conditions, rocks, etc..

Are you renting any ground that could be farmed at the going custom rates with the same equipment your dad and uncles have? My guys are doing that, and I really like to see it. It’s better to have partners, than employees. Who knows, maybe buy a 60 or an 80 here and there over time, establish a nice paper trail of data you can use to sell yourself to the bankers.
None of my business, but you seem like a great guy, and we’re practically neighbors. Hey, who cares what you look like, just stay healthy. I flew commercial airliners for 21 years. Tons of cosmic radiation up there. The sun coming through the wind screen is also less filtered. I always lathered up any exposed skin with sunblock.
Despite my best efforts(and I cannot overestimate how much time/energy that I have devoted to it), I have not been able to successfully land any reasonable tenancy oppurtunities since I returned home from college. I have had numerous opportunities to bid on cash rent stuff that went for prices that aren't sustainable for traditional crop production. I have nearly every tool available to me to make these things happen--massive amounts of farm resources and family that is extremely generous and supportive. However, I have not found it reasonable to trade their equity for cash to aggressively pick up land that I will lose the minute that I have to lower the rent bid the next year. The risk to reward ratio just isn't there, even if I wouldn't have to pay for equipment. It is silly to pretend that every pass is free if you own everything and don't owe any money. With that being said, we have acquired a good chunk of a very fair custom arrangement that is both enjoyable to help manage and somewhat profitable after accounting for expenses. Although it may not seem like it, I am probably the only person that was brought onto this farm as a true employee. My dad and uncles have worked together for their entire lives. They are definitely all in different positions on the farm, but there really isn't a true hierarchy.
@@aTrippyFarmer it was none of my business. It is smart that you didn’t fall in to the trap of high rents when commodity prices were high. It’s insane around here, Their are a few widows renting ground for below $200, and their is Wall Street owned ground bringing $650.
I’m “just” an employee of my own operation, and that’s all my kids will ever be. Kind of a brutal set up, but my family had farmed all the way back to the days of the Roman Empire in the old country, and all it took was one generation to choose to sell out, and I had to rebuild in a way that I won’t live long enough to see it all come together. If future generations don’t want to farm, fine, but they are heirs to nothing except a very good paying job, if they can demonstrate measurable results.
