It was orchestarted perfectly, Nixon knew that due to watergate, he was most likely going to have to leave office. It's not a coincidence that as watergate was unfolding that Agnew's past criminal actions had came out. I had read somewhere that Nixon did not want Agnew to ascned to the presidency in the event Nixon either left office or was convicted and fired by the senate. I personally feel the Repbulican Party wanted Ford, to become Nixons VP then ascend to the presidency once Nixon left Washington. Although this does confuse me as Ford was the "leader" of the Repbulican Party, he did face staunch critisim from more conservative republicans, notably Ronald Reagan when Ford attempted to run for the presidency in 1976. And we all know that led to Ford being narrowly defeated by Jimmy Carter

Rachel Maddow's new book, "Bag Man," is riveting about Spiro and Baltimore, all the way to payoffs in the White House. The night he attacked television newsmen, I was on the air with the 11 o'clock news. All the way home til midnight I kept looking over my shoulder, as it was a mean, mean, mean attack. No doubt Buchanan was writing his "nattering nabobs of negativism"speeches about the media.
