      Funny how similar a lot of our experiences are. I bought a 100 watt JCM 900 as my first upgrade from my beginner/solid state Peavey and Fender amps. It was also a 4x12 and WAY too much for what I needed. Next was a Vox AC 10 and then a Fender Deluxe Reverb 68 reissue. I've been very happy with the Vox/Fender either in combination or as solo amps since then. I absolutely agree that you should buy used when you can, but ask a lot of questions and if things sound too good to be true they probably are. Thanks for these great videos Rhett.

      @andtothewestamerica Před 4 lety +1

      Also, play multiple copies of the amp you decide you want to buy! I played 4 or 5 Princeton 65 reissues and one sounded way better that the others and had a much lower noise floor.

    • @Pdnlegs
      @Pdnlegs Před 4 lety

      My FIRST amps were little crappy fender front man 15s. a bass one and then a guitar one. But since then I got a Vox VT20 modeler, a Fender Princeton Reverb with a 12inch Cannabis Rex speaker and covered in tweed, and a Marshal DSL 40cr. I guess i got the three main catagories covered. though a proper Vox would be a nice upgrade. the VT20 does a decent job modeling the AC sounds. That one has actually been passed down to my 7 year old son lol.

    It just dawned on me why your channel stands out my friend. You mix in your own riffs and runs that you like to play with bursts of some familiar tunes that have gotten air play over the years. It makes the tones so much more relatable. From a guitar player’s perspective I feel more like I am trying out the gear. There are other popular CZcams channels that feature so much incessant noodling that actually hearing the tone becomes impossible. Great job. Keep playing and I will keep on listening. Hope to catch you in Nashville next time you are there.

    these guitar and amp comparison talk throughs are really good and unique. The high level categorizations and then showing examples of each category is eye opening. Its very intimidating walking into a guitar store and not knowing what certain guitars sound like or what certain amps sound like and, when i was growing up, staff were not open to an enthusiastic kid trying out equipment unless it was clear they were buying that day. • @ExasBits
      @ExasBits Před 4 lety +2

      Roy Batty to you point amps diverge greatly from the big three. It’s just a handy way to narrow down what family it comes from. It’s kind of like defining music genres then shoehorning bands into the category. The definition may fit but it doesn’t tell you everything about the sound.

    I can get by with a blues Jr. and my pedal board. My highest powered amp is a 22 watt supersonic combo. We mic the amps with Plexi shielding most of the time to keep the stage volume down. All those amps you showed were way too expensive for most of the bands around here.

    Some great sounding amps in this video - My first proper amp was a Laney GH100L with matching 4x12, and it was great - lovely clean tone that handles pedals (or multi FX since it was the 90s) really well, I still have it and it's great, but the 4x12 is at the back of a cupboard and almost never gets out these days.
    I've been really lucky to have owned a few other amps over the years which gives me a crazy number of options, but that old Laney is still going, just through a smaller cabinet these days.

    My first Tube Amp was a Marshall DSL40. I was lucky to have a pretty decent sales guy I worked with at Guitar Center and he pointed me towards that when I was looking for my first tube amp. It was used, but he knew the guy that had sold it and said the guy routinely bought stuff and sold it 6-12 months later so he knew it was well taken care of. I can turn it down and play it nicely at home, but it also had the power to play in a band. That was probably 12 years ago. A few years ago I finally bought my second Tube Amp, a Fender Blues Junior because I wanted a Fendery Amp at a price I could afford at the time and play at home. Love both of them since they give me different sounds for what I want at the time.

      Well considering Marshall hasn’t made a good amp in decades most EL34 amps are better than a Marshall and in a world of Friedmans and Divided by 13’s they’re better not just sound wise but build quality. Does Marshall even make handwired amps any more?

      Chance Terrill oh I didn’t know too much about the DS but I was going to say my SB has that bouncy feel. Maybe it’s because I have the extra channel. It’s like a 3rd channel. Idk but I know that feel. I didn’t think the regular SB had enough gain so I sold it and moved up to the limited. Some dirt pedals have that bounce and some are stiff. Sometimes I’ll ask a sales guy does it have that bouncy feel or is it stiff and they don’t know what I mean. it’s nice to see a fellow Friedman lover on here. I have a certain amp big name amp co it is very stiff. Idk want to get sued. I’ll let you guess. One of the major guys. There’s no more stores in this city so I’m now forced to buy online.
