  • A video showing how the Chevy straight six 230/250/292 power steering setup is installed. A two piece bracket for the power steering pump on a Chevy 230/250/292 is presented here found on some straight six models such as novas, Camaros, and c10 pickups from 64-66. Possibly other years. Showing a close view of the brackets and setup. This one is a 66 Chevy pickup power steering pump bracket eBay purchase installed on a 1966 Chevy Sportvan with a Chevy 230 straight six. The actual setup is 3 pieces ( including the adjustable sliding bracket). Any questions or measurements you need comment below and I’ll try to answer

    Great Video. Extremely helpful. My problem at this point is that I only have a single groove water pump pulley so I'd have to change that out. Also, what size are the belts? Can you please add the part numbers if possible? Thanks.

    hi ... good video! can i ask... did you have to adjust your alternator at all? i am putting mine back together and having a hard time. It has to come out to line up the double pulley with the crank and water pump pullies. it would be easy if the bracket had a sliding adjustment to the block.... but it doesn't have that. i am stumped!

      Hi. Thanks. I just tightened my alternator to tighten that particular belt. After that, the power steering pump gets raised for tightening that belt. Is your pulley not lining up? I had purchased an aftermarket double pulley but it put the grooves in the power steering pump further back, so I put the original pulley back on which put the brought the groove of the power steering pump forward in line with the water pump pulley. The power steering pump pulley which lined up was part number P 3791943CI GM. Don’t know if that pulley will help you. It’s a single groove pulley

    Did you ever do a great job of showing and explaining this! I would have benefitted from seeing it in 1980, when I was installing a 292 in my 53 Pontiac. The hanging bracket for the P/S pump on mine is one piece, not two like yours. On top of it, at the cylinder head, is another bracket that forks over the pump, front and rear, with belt adjustment slots. I wonder if that setup showed up during your research. It never dawned on me to use a shoulder bolt in the adjuster groove for the alternator belt; I just used the top alternator mount bolt as the pivot for my power steering pump support bracket. I notice misalignment of your P/S pulley with the other pulleys. Maybe that has to do with the camera angle, but mine was stubbornly misaligned until I made a bracket running from the lower rear bolt on the pump back to a carb mounting bolt. My alternator has a double pulley, and I use one belt for crankshaft/alternator/P/S pump and A/C compressor, and another for crankshaft/alternator/water pump.

      Apparently I don’t check here as often. Just looking at your comment now. Thanks for your comment and sharing your experience with a similar setup. After that video was posted I did observe the correct way to attach that slider/guide/adjusting bracket. Instead of attaching to the alternator slider bracket it is attached to the front ear of the alternator. I have seen your bracket setup as well. I definitely see the misaligned pulley in the video as well. Once I pull it up as if I was adjusting and tightening a belt, the pulley aligns well to the other pulleys. I placed a metal rod the girth size of the pulley grooves and it slid down through both water pump and power steering pump smoothly.

    Great job! Could you please share the source for the 3 pully setup on the water pump. I have a 250 I would like to add air con to. Thank you!

      I don’t recall seeing a part number on the actual bracket and my search found nothing on eBay currently that I can direct you over to. I have pictures of different angles of the original brackets shown in the video if you want as reference. Let me know and I’ll send you pictures. I did save a picture of a guy who remakes these brackets with pictures of his brackets and contact information. I don’t know how to attach photos to comments. Send me your email and will attach photos to send your way if you’re interested.

    Where did you get that motor bracket? Can you post a link? I’ve been trying to find that exact one.

    • @66BeachCruiser
      @66BeachCruiser  Před 3 lety +1

      I got it on eBay. No link since it was just a random part from the seller. You can find similar cradles but it’s the other attached bracket that is harder to find. Type in Chevy 230 or Chevy 250 power steering bracket. I might have also typed in 1966 c10 power steering bracket.There are different types but you have to recognize how this one looks to make sure you get the right one. This is one reason for making the video. There is an eBay vendor that is making this exact bracket. He keeps making them. But you can still find originals.

    Where did you buy the power steering bracket? I have a 292 that was put inside a 56 chevy 3100 truck

      I searched eBay looking for Chevy 230/250 power steering brackets. There are different kinds. You have to remember how this one looks and mounts so that’ll you recognize it when searching. This is one reason for making this video, so that more people can recognize the brackets and see how it is set up. There’s a vendor on eBay that is reproducing these, but original ones are out there.

      Shoot me your cell phone number or email if you’re still interested in me sending you a picture of the bracket used. I hadn’t logged into my CZcams channel account in a while and just now seeing this. I don’t immediately see an option to put a picture on the comments here.

    What gear box do you use with that set up

    • @66BeachCruiser
      @66BeachCruiser  Před 4 lety

      Hi Frankie. Sorry just commenting back. I’m doing a custom setup on my 66 Chevy sportvan/g10. I’m using the stock manual gear box but using steering assist. A power steering control valve will be integrated into the drag link which will be connected via hoses to the power steering pump and a hydraulic cylinder to push the steering during turns. A common one out there is a corvette style or mustang style. I’m using a 74-76 Ford F-250 power assist setup. I’ll be putting a video of that soon.

      Don't tell anybody, but I used a steering box with the FoMoCo symbol on it. I don't remember why, but availability and cost no doubt played a significant role in the selection. Thirty some years later, I had to replace it while on a winter trip to Florida. The parts store got it in overnight, I think, at a very reasonable price.
