  • This presentation takes us back to 2007 in West Central Minnesota to see the operations of the Otter Tail Valley Railroad. Owned at the time by RailAmerica, this railroad was well known for its use of high hood EMD “geeps”. The two featured in our video are MNN 1483, which is an ex Nickel Plate GP9, and OTVR 192, which is a former Southern Railway GP18. Both are painted in the attractive silver, red, and blue RailAmerica paint scheme. C. Vision covers operations on the entire length of Otter Tail Valley’s mainline from Fergus Falls to Moorhead, Minnesota. We catch the train cruising the high iron, working local industries, and interchanging freight with the BNSF in Dilworth, Minnesota. We will also get a chance to watch a few BNSF trains while the OTVR crew completes their interchange work in Dilworth. We hope you enjoy this video, and if you do, be sure to like, comment, subscribe, and check out more from C. Vision Productions in the links below!

    Still kinda sad i missed filming this era of my local railroad. BNSF shuttles ( including the section to French which is quite scenic ) and the new G&W locomotives have been a treat though.

      The G&W GP40s are pretty darn neat. A worthy replacement for the high hoods! Thank you for the comment.

      The hill from the Pelican River crossing to the Airport was always an interesting pull. After that it seemed to be downhill all the way to Breckenridge.
      The last Doodlebug run West, in 1956 was filled up with kids from Lincoln School in Fergus, as we rode to Breckenridge.

    I wish that Rail America had never been forced out of existence. The Otter Tail Valley RR had rails that were well suited to 40 mph.

    • @CVisionProductions1
      @CVisionProductions1  Před rokem +1

      They were a unique company. I really liked their paint schemes. Yes, they did have track good for 40, but with short mileage, they didn’t want to go that fast to protect their equipment. Same went for the St. Croix Valley.

      The rails from Fergus to Barnesville were a bit bumpy, but after the Winnipeg Jct, the Welded rails allowed Passenger Trains to exceed 80 mph to Moorhead.
      The Dakotan ran up in the AM and returned at 5:00 PM eastbound. It was a nice ride in the days when the tracks of the Dakota Div went all the way.....

    • @CVisionProductions1
      @CVisionProductions1  Před rokem

      @Daniel Hutchinson Do you know when that welded rail was installed? Or could it have been jointed rail welded together? The Twin Cities & Western recently did quite a bit of joint elimination using the “cut n’ slide” method.

    the 18s were originally built for the then shortline Norfolk Southernas low hood models, Southern acquired the rr and installed high hoods at Pegram Shops in Atlanta.

    • @CVisionProductions1
      @CVisionProductions1  Před rokem +1

      That’s very good information! Thank you. We did recall that those GP18s were “original” NS, which is pretty neat. One of the very few groups of locomotives that had high short hoods installed later in life...

      @@CVisionProductions1 I remember a couple of them old Southern Locos had dual controls. I recall when Monhart first brought them to sit in Fergus and they ran a Dinner Train to the East before A&K came and ran off with the rails. They had former Lakawanna passenger cars.

    • @CVisionProductions1
      @CVisionProductions1  Před rokem

      @Daniel Hutchinson Interesting. Is it possible that the GP18s had a second control stand installed during their Southern high hood makeover?

    During the 1980's BN replaced some areas of the Dakota Division. They dropped a lot of rail through Fergus as I was planning to exit a Freight car one evening and I had to ride to Ashby before they finally stopped.
    Landing on a 39 foot long piece of rail does nothing for your ability to tuck and roll.....
