    Just wanted to put this comment here I’m a second year medical student and throughout these two years your videos has always helped me expand my understanding of a lot of topics especially that anatomy is my favorite medical subject. your way of explaining stuff is always entertaining and I love that you focus on the main points instead of making hours long videos you just cut straight to the point💜 truly thankful for all your efforts &wish you all the best dr Sam 🥰

      Thanks! That's the first time anyone has said I get straight to the point though. Opinions vary!

    Well, apparently the word palate is a derived from the Latin palatum >into old French Palat, and it is a word that is used to refer to a roof. So the roof of the mouth.
    Thanks for the vids Sam :)

    • @SamWebster
      @SamWebster  Před 4 lety +9

      That sounds good. Much of anatomical Latin is a modernish neo-Latin, so as you say, old Latin to French to weird anatomy neo Latin.

    Talking about palate, it reminds me questions I always wondered about in my mind. When meditating along with a lotus pose, it suggests that tongue touch palate. I wondered if there is any specific point for the tongue to touch and if there is any scientific meaning for that? In case there is one, is there any scientific explanation for that? Your presentation amazes me!

    palate (n.)
    late 14c., "roof of the mouth of a human or animal; the parts which separate the oral from the nasal cavity," from Old French palat and directly from Latin palatum "roof of the mouth," also "a vault," which is perhaps of Etruscan origin [Klein], but de Vaan suggests an IE root meaning "flat, broad, wide." It was popularly considered to be the seat of the sense of taste, hence transferred meaning "sense of taste" (late 14c.), which also was in classical Latin.
    Seems like a vault to me!

    • @SamWebster
      @SamWebster  Před 4 lety +2

      Maybe "palatum" was just the old Latin word for that part of the body and I'm overthinking this.

      @user-tk9cb2dl6l Před 4 lety

      Sam Webster Hey , I came up here from the maxillo facial course to remember the anatomy of the palate . Having studied latin for 5 years in the high school (yes , sadly I am italian) I think your conclusion is the most correct . Palatum is simply the word romans used to describe that part of the body , I believe roman anatomists would identify the roof or the oral cavity simply as palatum . It would be nice to know more of the etimology , but no data is available . It is what it is . 🤪🤪

    • @user-tk9cb2dl6l
      @user-tk9cb2dl6l Před 4 lety

      Sam Webster Thinking about , it is wonderful to imagine Palatum derives from the curved shape of the Palatine hill

    Great video! Allowed me to learn the palate comprehensively. Much appreciated! May I ask and would you please explain what is the relationships and connections of pterygoid hamulus, tensor veli palatini tendons, tensor veli palatini, levator veli palatini and palatopharyngeus? I have been suffering the pain at the region of pterygoid hamulus on my right side for 5 years, it leaded to the swishing sound in my right ear and also the pain of my right side throat pharyngeals. I was diagnosed a rare disease called "Pterygoid hamulus elongation syndrome". But I had no luck to find a doctor who can treat it. Do you have any recommendation? Thank you very much for your help! 🙏🙏🙏

    I urgently need some help... couple weeks ago I went through tonsillectomy and this is my third week post op, and I am struggling to exhale through my nose. Sleeping at night is the hardest. I snore terribly, I drool, grasp for air and wake up in severe pain around my soft palate. I am so scared. Am I going to suffer from this for the rest of my life? Please, somebody, please, help me with your advice.
