    What a thrill to play with the legend. I went to the ITA workshop in Nashville way back in 79 or 80. Bill gave a clinic 1st thing In The morning. He joked about not being able to play well so early then proceeded to kill! Still remember the gist of his talk... if you want to play a song well learn the lyrics and sing them in Your head while you play the song. Best tip I ever got! He is missed. Thanks for posting this.

    The legend himself... I remember being so incredibly shocked in high school when we played his arrangement of Corea's "Spain" and the lead part had that high F... Good times. If only I could play with him now! I think his sound is the one I try to emulate the most.

    Had the rare privilege of spending some time with Bill Watrous in the Tucson airport a while back. He is a wonderful conversationist. Enjoyed his stories of time spent with Rosolino and Fontana. Wondeful legendary tales about three of the top trombone players. He is a great musician and gentleman. May he play on and on for all of us to enjoy.

      bigsonny73 Yeah, he came up this year to Alaska for our annual valley jazz fest. And in one of the clinics we were in, it was just me, Bill, my friend and another kid. We didn't even work on anything that whole hour and a half because we just loved listening to his stories. But when we did play a little in another class, he said I had an amazing tone and vibrato, and that little comment made my... year, to say the least.

    I was at Rob Stewart's instrument shop one day and Bill had the Bach in this video in for a slide tune up. Bill had been looking for a small dent in the slide and extended it overhead toward the light on the ceiling....Bill Watrous caught the outer part of his slide on a spinning ceiling fan. Two full laps before it was tossed on the hotel room floor.

  • @jimpemberton
    @jimpemberton Před 4 lety +7

    I like how Watrous tunes sharp to give him room to come in on first position. I picked that up in the Marines as a solution to marching in changing weather. If you have infinite tuning, you might as well use it.

    excellents tous les deux... et surtout, ne comparez pas les 2 sonorités 1) le trombone de Paul semble meilleur 2) les micros sont différents et leurs positions différentes ( un micro sur pied et un micro sur instrument ne donnent pas le même son)) Il me semble que Mr Watrous a eu quelques petits problèmes de justesse . En direct , comme ça , avec la pression d'un outsider en plus , c'est un peu normal. Paul s'affirme comme un grand tromboniste : il a un bel avenir devant lui .

    In my honest opinion, I don't think that Bill Watrous has the best tone. It seems kinda airy and dry, while Paul's is very clear and pronounced. I do think that he does have great skill. Those lip slurs are extremely good. I just don't like his tone.

    • @ryandavies7929
      @ryandavies7929 Před 6 lety +3

      Noah Miller yeah that’s because sound starts to deteriorate when you reach like 60+ so it’s no wonder it’s a bit airy, a young man like Paul should have a drier and crisper sound that bill simply due to his age

    • @TasX
      @TasX Před 6 lety +2

      I think trombones sound best with that soft airy sound though. If you want pronounced, you already have the trumpet, sax, and every high instrument. Trombones are the melody that fill the gaps
