I don't understand why this video lists their horn and mouthpiece models...it's pretty obvious that it's the sunglasses models that make the performer...please list the stats...
Fantastic! RIP Bill Watrous...
R.I.P.
What a thrill to play with the legend. I went to the ITA workshop in Nashville way back in 79 or 80. Bill gave a clinic 1st thing In The morning. He joked about not being able to play well so early then proceeded to kill! Still remember the gist of his talk... if you want to play a song well learn the lyrics and sing them in Your head while you play the song. Best tip I ever got! He is missed. Thanks for posting this.
The legend himself... I remember being so incredibly shocked in high school when we played his arrangement of Corea's "Spain" and the lead part had that high F... Good times. If only I could play with him now! I think his sound is the one I try to emulate the most.
Bill does alternates so much but doesn't falter once, he is truly a trombone master.
Had the rare privilege of spending some time with Bill Watrous in the Tucson airport a while back. He is a wonderful conversationist. Enjoyed his stories of time spent with Rosolino and Fontana. Wondeful legendary tales about three of the top trombone players. He is a great musician and gentleman. May he play on and on for all of us to enjoy.
bigsonny73 Yeah, he came up this year to Alaska for our annual valley jazz fest. And in one of the clinics we were in, it was just me, Bill, my friend and another kid. We didn't even work on anything that whole hour and a half because we just loved listening to his stories. But when we did play a little in another class, he said I had an amazing tone and vibrato, and that little comment made my... year, to say the least.
@@Collin_H that's an awesome story, thanks for sharing
I was at Rob Stewart's instrument shop one day and Bill had the Bach in this video in for a slide tune up. Bill had been looking for a small dent in the slide and extended it overhead toward the light on the ceiling....Bill Watrous caught the outer part of his slide on a spinning ceiling fan. Two full laps before it was tossed on the hotel room floor.
I like how Watrous tunes sharp to give him room to come in on first position. I picked that up in the Marines as a solution to marching in changing weather. If you have infinite tuning, you might as well use it.
Wow, must be a great feeling to play alongside a legend!
I do not get tired of seeing and hearing this gringos enjoy and play the best of Brazilian music.
Bill navigates the changes in such an interesting way, there's little turns of phrase and shifts in direction that are brilliant.
Oh Man Paul, that was VERY VERY cool. Must be awesome playing with an idol trombonist like Bill Watrous! Well played sir
It is sad that this cat passed away the other day. I've always loved his playing and I got to see him in person at a jazz festival at SHSU. Gonna miss him D:
same
Beautiful. I love a good Bossa Nova, and to hear these guys play it is just marvelous.
Rest in peace Bill!
played this song in jazz band, we call it "seductive trombone" because of things like this
Very sad night. Just going through playing his music. What a treasure for you to have played some songs with him. You both sounded great and played off ea other very nicely. Enjoyed it.
I love the accurate countdown on the camera break...😄
this sound is so light, like a whistle in a night dream
Hey Paul, thanks for putting the equipment you guys were using in the video. Great video and you both sound great!
I who was lost and lonely
Believing life was only
A bitter tragic joke
Have found with you
The meaning of existence
Oh my love
Great tone! Great playing! I also love the clothing and glasses nod to Bill would be interesting to see how you work on warm ups and improv
Wow. Amazing to hear a legend like that, and still play so well at an advanced age. Just to do the video would take an immense amount of self-confidence, but you sounded great, Paul. Fantastic sound and solo.
Has to be a dream come true to play with Bill.. The fun shows through for both of you.
Yes, Bill Watrous' tone on ballads is unique and probably impossible to duplicate by anyone. I am amazed this could be transcribed! I suppose Bill could play it again exactly as he did here. (?)
Bravo! Paul com o mestre Bill!
Very nice Paul! BTW, I really got a kick out of your Watrous imitation a few shows back! I'm sure Bill enjoyed it too!
This is wonderful, very tasteful lines
Both of you sound great !
Amazing playing ***** I love these kind of vids! Where you show your ability. Great tone , I love your style . It's unique, and I love it !
Raul Ontiveros thank you so much, your words mean a lot to me. hope all is well!
"Corcovado" by Tom Jobim, hello Paul, my name is Paulo Steinmeyer, e meu parente aí nos Estados Unidos, é Dave Steinmeyer. prazer em ouvir voce e Bill Watrous
adore this..... thanks
Paul I really like your playing especially low register; rich sound down there!
Well done!
Hi Paul this is really wonderful music & musicianship :) Made my day :)
Man yall sound great!!! Paul you have a awesome tone and I like your ideas and Mr. Watrous what can you say he has a tone that is so sweet and is like a encyclopedia of jazz period. I think the mold was broken for his sound and technique. Thanks for sharing!!!
And you're playing better and better Paul!
Jon Blondell thank you so much Jon, I always enjoy seeing you stop by. Hope all is well!
Puls tone and pitch is great
Bill is a gentleman. He tries to act like he enjoys Paul's solo but the talent levels are nowhere near equal.
Watrous is obviously a legend, not many can play the trombone like him.
Thanks for the nice comment. You seem like a very nice warm human being to be around with
Absolutely love this video. I wonder where the arrangement of this song came from.
The real books. Quiet Days and Quiet Nights
Sweet solo, Paul 😎
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Best combo
Like #469 and still no idiots without ears!! :-) Great music!!
Sensacional.
RIP Bill Watrous
Nice one, will be back

Paulo Monteiro Só tem nós de BR aqui haha
Paulo Vitor . É isso aí chará. Br. só sabe curtir o brega.
Rest in peace, Bill
Trombonists do it in 7 Positions! Awesome! Bill is currently 78....I wish my chops had lasted longer......
Thanks was u really there with bill ,, i feel like this was one of those add on things . Paul u got a nice low in sound low notes that is .
Is the song corcovado?
Where can I find this backing track?
That was pretty good paul congrats.
I love you
I feel good man.
What's the name of the song
its original name is corcovado. But it is often called quiet nights of quiet stars

R.i.p Bill
Rip
Them slurs though god dam
In my honest opinion, I don't think that Bill Watrous has the best tone. It seems kinda airy and dry, while Paul's is very clear and pronounced. I do think that he does have great skill. Those lip slurs are extremely good. I just don't like his tone.
Noah Miller yeah that’s because sound starts to deteriorate when you reach like 60+ so it’s no wonder it’s a bit airy, a young man like Paul should have a drier and crisper sound that bill simply due to his age
I think trombones sound best with that soft airy sound though. If you want pronounced, you already have the trumpet, sax, and every high instrument. Trombones are the melody that fill the gaps
He had an amazing tone back when he was younger. You should really check out his older stuff. I thought the same as you at first until I started looking up Bill Watrous from 70s and 60s and wow he is a monster. His range is unparalleled and control is outstanding. Trust me on this, you will not be disappointed.
@@deadeyenumber2892 I went through this same search years back and once I found Manhattan Wildlife Refuge my life changed. Bill is still so fantastic at this age though
Please try to get Joseph alessi
If I was getting into jazz this would put me off ....
