If you've never suffered from clinical depression, you'll never understand what's it's like and how best to treat it. I gave up on doctors and psychiatrists years ago and formulated my own routine to help me cope with it. Everyday is a fight but it can be done without medication.
Johann Hari is a very bright and articulate man with a lot of good advice for modern western societies.
Lost Connections by Johann Hari is simply an incredible book. A game changer.
I suffer depression, I find peace in my loneliness. With me, it's the inability to deal with the harsh and childish behaviour of people all around me that makes me retreat and self isolate. Isolation helps but I know it's not beneficial for me in the long term especially with the ongoing development of my social behaviour.
My point is that it is dangerous to say what depression is and how to find treatment when there are so many factors that cause it and so many ways to treat it. Seek advice from a psychologist first. Understand that you can change who you are.
You need to give in. You sound like a mature person and sometimes maturity comes at a cost. I'm not saying be immature but look at people with less judgement and forgive their behavior even if it annoys you. Some find solace in books and nature. At the end of the day man is meant to be a social being, as clichéd and overheard that statement is, it is true. I've been like you and I've had friends like you, eventually it's understanding that you never have as much time as you think you do. This world is just to observe and learn from and hopefully impart to others. Take yourself off the pedestal and that natural self centered-ness and you'll wake up tomorrow a completely different man. Worst case it's worth a shot. Wishing you all the best!
Danny Boy. If depression affects physical health visit a psychologist. In life there are only 2 problems --mind and the body. . To feel better reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice. Your breath and mind [brain] are closely related and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. Let change happen. When taking a walk, sitting in a park, at office, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Reduce negative social media. Avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes. Senior Counsellor.
It's true depression is a illness that other people help to give people.
Don't stay isolate depression could turn easily into dementia like that seek help stay safe
I love how they all talk over each other. Why not put 3 more people on the panel to really get the cross talk going.....good grief.
Just let Johann talk.
Here is a really good video of Johann giving a speech ON HIS OWN on depression for about an hour and it's brilliant.

I thought i was the only one that noticed they are talking over each other.
George Carlin: Given the condition of the World, depression is a natural response. It is the happy people who should be seeking treatment.

claire larravide that is so cool😎🤗 thanks for that!
Never heard that before. It makes sense. Thanks for sharing.
Thank god for the guy on the right, the guy on far left is a jerk as another commenter says
It seems that they keep challenging him in an aggressive way
Challenging accepted wisdom in a nuanced way will get you a lot of hate from MSM.
"No, well why should you?" Amazing

Depression is the result of seeing the world for what it really is..
Frances Caraballo- Good point
Gonna need less edge on that
I had treatment resistant major depression, twice. In the end it was so severe that i got cleared for a temporal lobe lobotomy. The day before surgery, one of the consultants suggested i have ECT. Along with ceasing sodium valproate it cured my depression. Granted i had to have 24 applications of ECT, and i still am recovering from anterograde and retrograde amnesia, 3 years later. I no longer have depression.
There all talking faster than a high speed rail...its causing me to become anxoiuse and more depressed
It is so rewarding and satisfying to give to others. It helps those we help and also ourselves. Spending too much time and money on ourselves does not do anyone any good at all. Being alone to unwind and recoup is always necessary each and every day but being alone all the time is never going to make us feel happy and healthy. A balanced way of life is what we should all be trying to aim for.
Yes he is. Just a little careful with severe forms of mental illness, taking therapy alone didn't do it for me, and he is not a doctor. Nazanin Radcliffe developed severe depression and PTSD in prison. Dream to ask her to find her lost connections and she'll be fine. These are very touchy subjects and the most important individualised.
Grief can happen in a number of life events besides the loss of a loved one and if you are an Empath, grief can be triggered by an array of those life events, some of which might not be common to the general public. Be informed before you try the drug option for the treatment of depression. Many drugs have various side effects that could be detrimental to you health and well being.
Johann Hari is on the mark. I’ve been depressed for over 25 years. Given so many combinations of drugs. The problem with healthcare is not all people can afford therapy. Mental health is not included in the basic healthcare plans. I would think that being severely depressed and anxious, if that results in suicide or, God forbid, harm to anyone else, that will cause a bigger problem.
I’m in the US where healthcare plans are not included.
The mental health industry is fairly useless, and I saw this as someone with a background in psychology. Taking psych meds isn't much better than taking street drugs -- okay, so the meds are pharmaceutically pure and you don't have to worry about ingesting gasoline or who knows what, but at the end of the day, you'll still be dependent on a chemical to feel good. Watch this -- it will bring you more understanding than a dozen therapists: czcams.com/video/zb8yjAgAqXg/video.html
This man speaks genuine common sence . Your loved ones , friends and family are better than loads of material things and selfishness only causes loneliness. One can have riches , but the best riches are human beings and pets.
WHY IS Jeremy VILE still on our screens? ?????
Is it just me or do all of them, shout and talk over the female panellist? She was right in the middle of speaking and every one of them cut her off, began to shout over her and her experience, which I genuinely wanted to hear more about and moved the conversation on. Disgusting.
Please add subtitles in spanish more people need to know this.
I went to world renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Was 5O years old and had depression and anxiety all my life. They prescribed a medicine no other psychiatrist had even mentioned. Within 24 hours of taking the medicine I thought “This must be what it’s like to feel normal.” Life-changing.
So what was the medicine ?
Escudo Most likely ketamine.
Escudo: what is medication?
So, should we all go to Mayo Clinic? Why are you commenting here?
@@Amolibri I’m saying they’re #1 in the world. If you want accurate results go there. I suffered for far too long. Mayo Clinic figured out my peace of mind in 24 hours. It’s worth it whatever it costs you❤️
Let him talk, this sounds like a political debate
Find the right girl. That's the key.
Sad thing in Australia is that GP’s prescribe ssris within 9 min visit. When patients want to get off the meds GP’s have never been formally trained in slow, safe tapering plans. Also GP’s have been taught that withdrawal only lasts two weeks 😫 and the industry calls it “discontinuation syndrome” 😂 The failed system keeps patients on drugs for ever because they are so difficult to get off them. GP’s still think the “chemical imbalance theory” Is actual science 😢
If you can keep your head, when all about you, are losing theirs, and blaming it on you……
Jeez, please let the guest who is the expert speak....wow
My depression turn into dementia now little by little I'm very scared life is so hard i have one advice to depressed people isolation isn't the solution it deteriorate your cognitive abilities more
I posted a long comment on your talk video. I wish you luck. I wish I could help you.
What are the real causes of depression? Being caught plagiarising, for one...
He has a TED lecture or two on youtube and has written a book - Lost Connections. Who knows about Dr Sam Everington, London doctor (East End)? Yere is Tje Lihtning {pOProcess - I think it's mainly NLP, done as 3-day trainng, but it costs nearly £700.
Stop interrupting each other!
Hope William and Harry find him
The real reason: löss of pride of feeling humiliated
Weak. Everybody is talking over each other
...fascina-
With this way of thinking you will always be suffering. If you cannot simply be by yourself then you are obviously in bad company.
So this year we're in a pandemic, people can't connect the way we used to, and depression is now everywhere. And a lot of the solutions suggested in this author's book, are not even available anymore. I need to find solutions for NOW. I think I'd have an easier time accepting Mr. Hari's concepts if he were a psychiatrist or psychotherapist - which may not be fair, but there it is.
Jesus - Happy are those conscious of their spiritual needs.
A lack of masculine role models in the home.
Feminist pressure on women to have a career,
Are a few of the problems.
Lol right mate
Well said
Pretty much the opposite of everything you wrote
Rhys Andrew not according to nearly every social study.
Professor of psychology Jordan Peterson details this his works to a large extent.
Definitely worth looking into even if you don't agree
'Feminist' pressure to have a career ? How ridiculous. Women have careers because they want them. We fought to have the opportunity to be educated and have opportunities to have a career.
The pressure on mother's to keep working (when they don't want to) after having children (especially fulltime and very soon after having a baby) is generally a financial necessity or out of fear of losing their career.
That's pressure brought on by capitalism, not feminism. Explain women going back to work as a waitress or cleaner if its pressure from feminism ?
Women are very capable of making rational decisions based on the needs of their family and their own futures thank you very much. We are not all running around worrying about what other career women think of us all the time. Even when we go back to work within a year of giving birth it can badly affect our careers and puts a huge dent in our superannuation.
There is no part of feminist philosophy that says all women/mothers have to have careers. Feminism is about having choices and creating opportunities for people, regardless of gender, to pursue the life that best suits their personality. Its about allowing men to take on care giving roles and women to join the army if thats what suits them better, not forcing all women to be working mothers.
This guy seems like the courismadic guy at an aa meeting who seems so altruistic and caring but when you try to talk to him after the meeting he's distant and non caring.Hope I'm wrong... wrong...
These shows always interrupt their guest. So much Ego going on. Just let the man finish and then say your piece
He really should refrain from discussing trauma. It's certainly not as simple as "talking to somebody". This is why lay people shouldnt give advice on mental illness
Yeah, but it's like beggining of the truth. Still better advice than mainsteam psychology is giving to people: "it's chemical imbalance, nothing you can do about it, just take those pills for the rest of your life, NEXT".
Are you saying Johann is a lay person and shouldn't give advice? If that's your statement you clearly didn't listen to this interview closely or listen/read any of his work. He clearly states in this interview many times that he speaks with experts on the subject. He constantly cites credible studies. So Johann isn't giving his advice, as you say, he is simply passing along the advice and research of the experts on this subject.
@@asdzxcz1360 You mean mainstream psychiatry, not psychology
@@ted_nemeth Read what I wrote again.
Watch his TED talk. Its about re finding purpose, giving you something to get out of bed for. The Portuguese addiction segment in the ted talk makes more sense to me than anything I've ever heard. Absolutely brilliant.
These guys are such a-holes for the way they talk over the woman & barely let her speak. They’re all so itching to talk that they talk over themselves and when she finally got a word in and had a good example, one or two of the men were trying to start talking and she had to talk faster to finish her story. Then the host cracked a rude joke asking if she had been on lithium. So sexist, the way they assume they have the most value as a speaker. Not cool.
Pink Sky i don’t think Lina Myscow would be intimidated by anybody actually. It’s not that they aren’t letting her get a word in - it’s that they are both experts in their field. So she’s allowing them to speak. But then she speaks about her personal experience. You’re finding a problem where one doesn’t exist. No wonder the world is depressed!
Steve Maggs I’m about as conservative as it gets & DEFINITELY not a feminist so I rarely see anything as sexist. I’m not that chick. With that said, I know sexism when I see it and they were definitely talking over her and assuming their own words were more important. You’re not going to be as aware of it if you haven’t experienced it or go into everything thinking the concept of sexism is overblown or not really a thing.
Get yourself to spec savers. Many many many videos of a team of males debating and every one of them talk over each other. Is Piers Morgan also sexist now? He does it to almost everyone.
Women and men are equal. Not because she is a woman, she deserves to talk half of the show
Get's somewhere good around 9 minutes
3:32 Yes, ma'am. They do sometimes unfortunately. For those of us that are not middle-aged white men, or those who they feel are more important sometimes they do not invest their best effort at providing service and avoiding drugs. Sometimes they get the biggest bang for their time if they can prescribe a temporary fix that also gets them paid.
Bollocks
Dreadful. He was drowned out.
I’ve been taking anti-depressant for the last 8 months. There is no improvement at all. GP just prescribed the drugs over phone without even meeting me in person using the excuse of Covid-19. I was wondering how long this Covid-19 excuses will stay in their head?
Hare you any beter?
A relative of mine cured his depression by getting a colonic.
Fermin please will you do a colonic to me?
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about period. Depression is as private as it is personal and as lonely as it is empty!
This is just obvious!! It ain't rocket science!! Nice guy but overated..He .aint saying nothing new!! Read his book and its same old same old..
depressed people on the internet will see this very productive conversations that include experts and sarcastically say "wow thanks im cured". if that's your approach, you are at fault, not society or not 'a lack of funding for care by the govt'. At some point you are going to have to take personal responsibility. Nobody is going to help you until you help yourself.
