Shirley Temple at Brookfield Zoo with Ziggy - 1938

  • My Grandfather, Joe Davies, took my dad to Brookfield Zoo around 1938. He was taking home movies with his Kodak 8mm camera when he happened to see Shirley Temple who at the time was one of Hollywood's biggest stars. I assume the elephant shown is Ziggy who later attacked one of his trainers Slim Lewis, I believe; perhaps the person shown here.
    Shirley appears to have the same model camera as this movie was taken with, and I now possess.

    Great film.... I love Shirley Temple and I have always been curious about Ziggy and Slim Lewis I have read their story but have only ever seen postcard images of Ziggy in the zoo ....so nice to see a film of him...thanks for posting

    Poor ziggy. Free these beautiful creatures from the jails they live in. Especially since he was CHAINED in an indoor enclosure only 5 years after arriving to the zoo and remained there for over 3 decades … im disgusted

    The movie camera that this was taken with looked very much like the one that Shirley is holding.

    Hey one of those guys with her looks like Lee Harvey Oswald!
    If true Ziggy should have taken him out.
