Gorgeous Historic Gravel Biking from Cambridge to Saffron Walden

- Welcome to another Pedalling Past 'Time Travel Gravel' adventure where we take you back into history on a bike on carefully curated, low and no traffic roads and gravel tracks.
This 76km mixed surface ride starts in Cambridge heads south on a Roman Road to Linton before swinging round to the beautiful historic town of Saffron Walden. Then we swing north on ancient tracks before daisy chaining beautiful villages back up to the fantastic bike path network of Cambridge.
It's lovely rolling route that's largely off road on quiet tracks but with wet weather road options if conditions are muddy. There are loads of places to stop for tea and cake or a pint and a pie too, and I can personally recommend Linton Kitchen and Bicicletta in Saffron Walden.

the bridal way as you come out of Linton up until the field after the house is an old railway which then continues straight on towards bartlow

For info there are two Pedalling Past profiles on Komoot. One looks like a duplicate but has no tours/routes.

Thanks Jason, that's a great question and we should probably do a video just about that. There is a video presentation we just did for a local riding group that covers a bit of it that I'm uploading now.
We'd say the more time you can invest in the mapping and research the better your route will be. So get stuck into the OS maps on those cold and rainy days when it's not as fun to ride. We use OS online as you can try out lots of different route options and see how they join up. It's surprising how quickly the mileage and climb gains can add up though so I'd always say keep routes shorter. If there are lots of interesting or tasty places to stop you'll be amazed how low your average speed can be. We think that's a good thing to be honest as we'd rather really get the most out of half a ride then come back and do the second half another time than rush past things.
The other thing Sarah always says is that don't be afraid to get a little bit 'mislaid' (she doesn't like the feeling of being completely lost) as you can always retrace your steps.
Oh and always take more food and clothes than you think you might need. Better to go with extra snacks and unworn layers than be hungry and cold.
