    Just picked up a 2012 CLS550 for the wife - OE Tuned and removed the resonators and replaced with a straight stainless. Debating wether I should get an x pipe or not.... what are your thoughts on straight pipe vs x-pipe for turbo motors? Will also likely do the tensioners ahead of time, still below 100k kms on ours

    • @Redlineracinggarage
      @Redlineracinggarage  Před 2 lety

      Nice! Well in my opinion both are great options but the reason I went with a x pipe is because the big resonator is already connected with the 2 exhausts and it’s there for a reason to create more back pressure. But also that the 2 exhausts are connected and the turbos communicate with each other via the exhaust. That’s the reason I did a x pipe

    I have a 2014 E550 with the M278 engine. It has 74,000 miles. Last year at 65,000 miles I had to replace the entire engine wiring loom and ECU because of a simple failure of the camshaft position sensor o-rings which causes oil to leak into the loom and contaminate the ECU. This is something that mercedes knows about and it's a recall on some of their M276 engines but they are not covering it on the M278 engine. That cost me $7,500 at the dealership. It was back in today for its yearly service and I get the dreaded mid-day call from my service rep. This time my water-pump is ready to fail and the turbo coolant lines are cracked. Estimate came in at $5,000 parts and Labor. I told them to go ahead and do that too. I asked my service guy "whats next?" . He always gives me the same answer, "well its a clean car and you maintain it well, I just think you had some bad luck". Thats BS. Seeing these type of videos tells me these engines are a lot of trouble. Looks like this check valve is next on my list!
    If you are on here you are probably thinking about buying one. You can get them cheap-ish now and they have a lot of get up and go. They really are a sleeper car. But my advice as someone who has had one for the past 6yrs, if you are considering one with 60k - 70k miles on the clock, just walk away. These M278's seem to be developing problems at that time frame and my guess is that some of the ones for sale out there are like mine that get diagnosed with problems and people just move them on with known issues ready to fail on you. The MB chat boards are filling up with threads about this M278 engine and its issues. Also, even if you are handy with tools, you can only do so much unless you have an MB Star Diag. tool lying around. Mercedes have their newer cars locked down to avoid a lot of DIY repair. They Just don't make them like my Dad's old W124. That thing ran forever and we used to fix it in the back yard with basic tools and cheap parts.
