There is a special place in heaven for people like you who go out of their way to help and inform others! Thank You! I just bought this winch, and I have much more confidence to install and use it after watching your video.
Ghostses--thanks for the email reply. I don't know @ Google settings to receive your comment, but I do know that I got the winch mounted and operational! WaHoo! My son helped me install a Draw-Tite front receiver, and we're in bidness! Your video also inspired me to use the winch to remove a dead tree at the neighbors.
Bought the Harbor Freight 12000 winch several months ago. Still in the box. This was very informative. Had not thought of using to remove small trees. Thanks for posting
This one video informed me of 10x the amount of information I could not get after 1/ reading the manual supplied by Badlands with the identical winch 2/ from talking with a store manager at Harbor Freight store 3/ from talking on the phone with the managers manager 4/ from calling habor freights toll free number and speaking with the tech on duty. Everything was explained in detail and easy to understand. Thank you so much , you just made my life and wallet happy Rich Caccamo
Sorry for the delay Rich. Your comment was stuck in the 'approve' section for some odd reason. I just noticed it. Glad the video was helpful and you found it informative. Take care and good luck, G.
+ghostses You did an awesome job ... Glad I came across your video .. this is my 1st time buying and installing a winch .. thanks very much for taking the time to do this .. :)
They never will because of the liability. I just bought the updated version over the weekend, and frankly I'm surprised by how much is actually in the manual for usage.
WOW... I must say.. That sir was the most in-depth video I've seen in a long time. I really appreciate you taking the time to do it. I learned more in this hour than I did watching 15 other videos. Thank you :)
This is an absolutely-superb review of the winch and its inner workings. I never understood planetary gearing before, but I now have a reasonable appreciation of why it's employed, and how it functions. Thanks very much for a very thoughtful, obviously-experienced session.
One of the best [thorough and comprehsive] videos that I have ever seen on You Tube. I just bought the same model and plan to mount it to a big Ford tractor for work in the woods. Thank you so much
I watched this video before I bought my winch, and I just watched it after nearly finishing installation. It's an unbelievably informative video. I'm still amazed at how fluidly you explain everything, without any fumbling for words.
Well thanks! I'm glad you found it informative. Not that I use mine all that much, I'm still completely satisfied. Hope yours works out well for you. Take care, G.
Holy cow! Badlands Winches and/or Harbor Freight should buy the rights to this video from you and include it in a DVD with every winch purchase! Very well done and helpful! I learned a lot. I understand that the use aspect was shown from your own application needs, but someone PLEASE follow this exact format and make a video showing vehicle recovery techniques. Thank you, ghostses for such an informative video.
LOL! Thanks Rick! I'm glad you found the video useful. Hopefully someone will post some good rigging techniques. I tried to cover some basic setups, but am sure there are tons of other options- depending on how one might be stuck. Take care, G.
I have never seen a youtube review/tutorial with so much information! I loved every minute and learned so much. I worked professionally with 12000 lb winches for over 25 years and still picked up a ton of info! Thank You ghostses and you have a new avid subscriber. Randy
6771Randy Thanks Randy! I'm glad you liked it and thought I served the subject well- especially with you having so much experience with them. My channel is comprised of tool reviews, some how-to's, and things I just have going on. Feel free you look through my videos for anything of interest and skip over things that are not. Thanks for the comments and take care, G.
Omgoodness this video needs to be in top ten of every homeowner list. CZcams should notice this video as top quality. Thank you. I learned so much. Feels as if I just took an outdoorsmen class for free.
Just have to second what others have already said; excellent comprehensive review! Concise & in depth in all the right places. The safety advisory & information (hook up, differences between snatch & recovery, etc) regarding winch use are worth their weight in gold alone. Thanks for the all the work you put into making this video.
+TangentJim Well thanks Jim! I'm glad you found it useful. Trying to compile so much information regarding this product and subject into one video did make it quite long. I do try to shoot my videos as a one-stop-shop so I do my research and homework on the back-end and consolidate things for others. I appreciate the appreciation of my efforts. It sure lets me know I'm doing it right. Thanks again and good luck, G.
I'm winch shopping now (never had one before) and you probably have just saved me hundreds of dollars in the future. Before I mount it, I'll break it down to make sure things are lubed up properly. Actually, those safety tips are worth even more. Much appreciated!
Thank you, I also have purchased one of these lately, and learned a few things from your video, greatly appreciated. Now I need to see if I can find one of those grabbers and that grabbing chain.
Thank you for a VERY educational video on winches in general, the 12000 pound Harbor winch, as well as both use and safety guidelines. P.S. I bought their 12,000 pound winch, and now, I will be a lot more comfortable with setting it up. Many people advocate switching to a synthetic cable, but because of winch heat and other items it sounds as though I should stick with the wire cable.
This is one of the best breakdown / reviews I've ever come across. Great job, and thank you for your attention to detail! Very professionally executed.
Thanks! I'm still extremely pleased with it, and the price was right for my applications. It's not been used tons, but does the job when required. If you do get one, feedback with your thoughts after use. Good luck, G.
Harbor freight has an amazing deal for this 12k for 294.99 until Sunday! Great job btw, it makes a great deal that much sweeter after seeing your review
roy kwon That is an amazing deal Roy and thanks! I'm completely satisfied with mine and it works great for me. If you get one, let us know what you think. Good luck, G.
another trick for those cotter pins is you take a needle nose pliers and roll the ends in this completely gets rid of any chance the cotter pin could snag you and also provides slightly better pin retention because the 2 ends look more like the cotter pin eye
First I like to say that you're video review was very well done. I've been on the fence on purchasing the Harbor Freight winch, I say you made a good case for me to go ahead and make that purchase now. Thanks.
Well thanks John! I've read some of the reviews on them, and they were about 50/50 not unlike most of their stuff. I've seen how some treat their tools, so it's no wonder...lol. I've been using it for several days now and its working out great for me. I'm satisfied for sure. Good luck if you pick one up. G.
All those screws and bolts need blue Loctite at least or else they will vibrate out when driving on corrugated roads(in Australia especially) . Those sprung fairleads are rubbish . they stop tangles when running out, but cause issues when winding in under load. regreasing the unit with normal wheel bearing grease is Ok, but I prefer water resistant grease usually used on boat trailer bearings. A very good review, strip down and comments, fair to the product. Well done.
Thanks a lot! This was probably the most thorough review I've seen period. How has this winch been holding up for you? Considering one for myself. Thanks again.
cellycel040 Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!. Since posting the video it's been used plenty and has worked great on each use! I'm completely satisfied with it. Hope this helps and good luck, G.
I bought one and installed it on a rolling A FRAME in my garage to pull engines with and a smaller one mounted on my wall to use on a small lift to raise my riding mower off the floor for storage of it. Works great.
I got the wireless control also. What I have noticed, there is a second or two delay from when you release the button (regardless if you are paying out or taking up slack). Just be careful taking up the slack, the delay can be dangerous.
+tc1uscg I don't think the delay on mine is quite that long, but there certainly is one for sure. You are correct about being careful- especially when winding the last of the cable in. Thanks for the post, G.
Highly informative, I learned a great deal from this, and now I'm ready to buy a 12000-pounder to install on my 2021 Canyon Denali 4x4 crew cab (with lockers) pick-up truck that I love so much.
The best "how to" video I've ever seen on CZcams. A bit slow on the dialogue, but this actually helps because there's very little pausing and backing up to repeat something. Great job ghostses. Keep 'em coming..
+Alexander Berlin Thanks Alexander! I'm glad you liked it. That's just the cadence I use, so I'm glad it was fast enough, but not so fast to have to backup...lol. Take care, G.
I was looking for someone who was going to mount the winch to a receiver hitch set up. This is the first one i clicked on and it just what i needed. Thanks.
Wow. I learned a lot! Good info on the safety portion as well. I was planning on getting the 12k winch but was a bit hesitant cuz of the brand but I'm sold now.
You are a natural teacher my friend. Awesome video. I got at Harbor Freight 12000 a couple days ago. The price is over 600 bucks now as they have discontinued the old model and replaced with a new one. A 25 percent off coupon offset the cost a bit. I must admit I was mystified at how to install the fairlead until I watched your video. Thanks for your wonderful video.
I'm considering buying the champion 12000 lb winch from Costco.. It's going to see very minimal use and since it's Cosco I think I'll take the chance...
Thanks for the heads up on the tear down. I purchased mine 2 years ago, and recently pulled a car up on my trailer. I thought the chrome bumper was scraping on the angles holding up the spooler, but it was actually shearing off the lever to the transmission. I might have got lucky and only broken the set screw, but I'll have to look at it again when I see it. For reference, the angles are tall enough to protect the lever which is why I didn't worry. Hindsight. Oh, well. If not I guess I got to buy a new one.
No problem Leon! Hopefully you can locate the problem and fix it over purchasing a new one. I don't know if HF sells parts for these- but it might be worth looking into. Good luck, G.
What an education there! Just got my first winch, to use just as you have shown here. Badland/Harbor Freight should pay you for this. Thank you for your time.
bought this winch....piece of typical Harbor Freight junk. We had a small tree fall across the road, blocking us from getting out.....oh boy.....we get to use the new winch! We cut the tree in half..hooked up the winch....put a strain on it....pulled for 8 seconds and it overheated and turned off...so we let it cool...used it again for 8 seconds before it quit again....long story short ..took an hour to move the tree. We replaced that Harbor Freight scrap metal with a 15000# Warn real Winch. The Harbor Freight winch makes your rig look like it has a winch and that is all. Video says 5% duty cycle....reality is 1% duty cycle....PURE JUNK....
Bill Waldron , im guessing you had several problems, not do to the winch. Probably not the right set up, like the proper battery size, rating, and Ah's. im guessing you ran stock power and ground cables that came with the truck, instead of upgrading the - and + wires, the alternator and starter wire as well. And I'm going to guess you didn't upgrade your alternator to a larger Amp unit, and when pulling with the winch, you just kept the idle at stock of around 750 rpms. Then you probably used the safety relays that come with the winch, without proper connections to it, leaving it to get hot in a few seconds. Its clear you don't have knowledge in this field. I've own this and many other winches, and there is absolutely no problems with this unit, if done right and set up properly. People like you shouldn't run a winch, unless you are willing to do things right.
DON'T EVEN GO THERE WITH YOUR INSULT! 19882fast4u" about the Harbor Freight junk winch not being the problem, but that is was installed incorrectly. You picked the wrong person to try to display your electrical knowledge with. The Harbor Freight winch is priced very cheap for a reason. It makes a nice front bumper decoration for wannabees. I am the owner of an industrial construction company and an electrician for forty years. Like many other Harbor Freight items, it is a piece of Chinese junk. The truck we tried it on was a heavy duty Dodge Ram Cummins with the heavy duty alternator and two batteries. We threw away the Harbor Freight junk winch and installed a Warn 15,000 pound commercial duty winch. It pulls all day. We do not have to leave the engine running or speed up the idle. You get what you pay for. I have put WARN winches on many of our service trucks over the 40 years in business for all day long hoisting, pulling, lifting, etc. with never a failure...never ever. .....years back...when in a jam, one of my construction foreman purchased a 24" Harbor Freight pipe wrench...The handle broke in two and nearly sent him off the building while working up high on the steel. The consumer just has to be careful what you buy from Harbor Freight........better to buy quality made in the USA and employ American workers.
Bill Waldron , yeah I can tell you are not a owner. But guess what I am, look it up, owner of the Car Whispers Mobile Mechanic Service, LLC. Makes me laugh, you claim your some owner and you have all this electrician mechanical background, but your in a Harbor Freight store buying a winch......sure you are! lol. Also you act just cause your in a big old dodge diesel, that makes a difference, lol. Shit is still stock on that rig, just like the rest omg. I know its a diesel, lmao I guess it should just pull better right???....get the fuck out. Its totally clear you dont know shit about a god damn winch. I tell you what, ill pay for your ticket here and back, show up at my business, will go down together and buy that harbor freight 12k winch. Will pull it out of the box together, and ill install it on any rig you chose in my parking lot, even my employees geo swift turd that he drives everyday, and ill pay to do it correctly.......Then will hook it up to any tree you like, and pull the thing out of the ground. And it wont take but a few minutes. Now the trade is, if you win, and it doesn't work, then ill give you 1k cash for the trouble, and a trip paid back home. But if it does work, you get to pay your own way home, and I get to kick you in the balls, and punch you in the face. Bet you wont take my offer will ya???? Go to my face book page, look up my business, and send me your info so I can send you a ticket. learn how to install a winch and operate it before ever touching one again. Now get the fuck out with your fake ass knowledge that you don't really have. Troll
Bill Waldron And just for the record, a "winch" in not for lifting you dumb shit, pulling only lol. ANOTHER example of you not knowing how to operate one. Probably work for McDonald's lol
Awesome video. I was planning on getting a winch for the work on property but was hesitant cause I know nothing on the subject. This video gave me the confidence that I needed. Thank you very much.
I've done a lot of research on winching via multiple sources prior to putting a Warn on my jeep. Winching is VERY dangerous if done improperly and there are plenty of horror stories on offroading forums to prove it. This video doesn't only cover the take-down of the winch but also a few very KEY IMPORTANT pointers like always using a hook strap to guide the cable back in, never using recovery straps for extensions, always hooking "UP", and using a heavy blanket/coat to absorb energy in the event of a line snap. All important things that can result in death/dismemberment if handled improperly and truthfully, some of these things basic winching manuals/guides will not teach you.
Glad I watched the teardown. On one of the HFT reviews a person gave the winch a 1 rating because they claimed it had plastic gears. Glad to see the only plastic in the gearbox was a simple snap ring spacer .
Thanks! If you can, post the link to the video (or where you read that) that stated the gears are plastic. I'd like to see it- or read it. But yeah, the only plastic piece in mine was the spacer. Take care, G.
Very in-depth review of this winch, nice and thank you. From what I found is that it really does pull hard! I pulled a 25,000 pound shipping container with a 3:1 snatch block and it did a great job! maybe someday I'll pull it apart and lube it up like you did.
what I did for my pickup is welded a 1 7/8 in. ball hitch to my winch mount so i can put winch on front or back, used welding cable and welding connectors for pos and neg. The ball mount allows the winch to swing in direction of pull so cable wraps on better and reduces friction
Nicely done. You should rename it and repost it for how to maintain and respect your winch. I've been wheeling for a long time and had to learn all of that the hard way. I only came on here to see about that winch because my nephew just bought one. Very informative. 👍🤙✌
This is probably one of most informative videos I have ever watched. I recently purchased the same winch and gained a ton of knowledge by watching. An awesome job! Thanks.
This video is still very relevant as of March 2020. I was able to get my badlands set up just fine with this. 10/10 with such in depth information. Well done.
Darn great video ! I fabbed up a mounting plate to go where my spare used to ride and put my roller fair line where my license plate was. A rear mount just made more sense for my needs. I wish I had known about the receiver hitch mount from Northern would have been way faster, although not quite as strong. I've got a 1/2 plate 10 inch wide from frame rail to frame rail. Plus. it's be nice being to winch with a trailer hooked up to the hitch. One thing about grubbing the trees and shrubs... I hope you were sure of where all your plumbing was. Thank you very much for the effort you put into this video.
Thanks for the detail level and Trade (several) knowledge & care used in this video. As an Electrician who works with Millwrights and Mechanics, respect and humility are the first thing in any trade, you did a great job, I learned a lot.
I'm in the process of buying the same winch and pulling on a few trees and such. You done a great job on explaining some key points of safety and how it preformed for you.
Awesome video, much effort into this, safety, the whole bit. Just a note, when I pull stumps or concrete pilings or in your case 4x4 fence posts set in concrete, it is easier and much more successful to use an old tire rim, place it next to your fence post standing upright and then place your cable over the top of it as you would a pulley, the taller the rim, the better leverage you will have and keeping your winch down low as possible. This pulls the post or stump UP first rather than over and breaking off. Trees can withstand much force, side to side movement but not as much upward movement. I keep an old 16" rim around for chores like this.
After your breakdown of the gear ⚙ system and relube, I will be considering the Badlands winches when purchase time comes along. Very well done video. Thanks for your wisdom. 👍💯🍻
Thank you sir ! You've helped me greatly ! I just bought a winch same thing but must be slightly different as it's not got the automatic tensioner stuff. My friend bought it thinking his old one was bad turned out the battery was his problem. Point being he's lost the owner manual and that red strap for the hook ! Guess I'll figure out something ! Anyway that entire video you've shown me helped with the gearbox question I had do I trust they've done the BEST job or do I do as you did , so we'll see on that. Thank you again for your help and good luck to you !!!!
Good deal Kurt! If it's a HF winch, I believe they had to models of the 12k, one with the tensioner and one without. In most cases, you can download the correct manual by the model number on their website (assuming it's a HF winch). You can make a strap pretty much out of anything, or purchase one. Good luck to you as well, G.
this is about the best review I've seen on a winch. I've been looking at numerous budget winches and I'm pretty well sold on this one after watching this. I'll definitely be taking it apart and lubing it like in the video. Thanks for the information!
+James Griffin Thanks James! I'm glad you liked it. It's worked out extremely well for me. If you do pick one up, let me know what you think. Good luck, G.
The soft shackles, like from Bubba Rope, and Factor 55, in 7/8" diameter are good for 32,000 pounds and are not dangerous like a screw pin shackle in the event of failure. Also, Factor 55 makes great, pricey closed system products like their thimbles and Ultra Hook that allow you to lock the system and have the safety of a closed system. Nothing loose to fly off and kill someone. And, they test all products to failure with destructive testing. Nice, in depth review.
Within your sapling pull demo, you have the hook facing down, yet earlier you stated it should point up. Thought you'd want to know. Rest of video was clear. Thanks.
I actually watched beginning to end and learned, in my opinion, enough to go ahead and buy myself a winch when the time comes to upgrade my truck. Thanks for a very informative video
Justin Metcalfe Thanks cool Justin! It's turned out to be a great winch for my uses. Good luck if you get one when you upgrade your truck. Glad you liked the video. Take care, G.
I'm getting ready to install that exact winch on my dodge ram 3500 dully for our camping trip out west. I'm setting it up on the cradle so I can use it from either end of the vehicle with quick disconnect for the power. Thx again.
What I done with the winch on my car hauler was to put the battery on the Taylor. Then I wired up my truck to where my truck would keep the battery on the Taylor charged and it would stay charged all the time and this has worked very well,, just a thought,,, Harry
Excellent video! Greatly appreciate all the safety pointers you mentioned. Same deal here with wanting to use a winch to clear out brush on my property. Thanks amigo!
When you put a load on the winch, put a canvas bag or an old backpack loaded with stuff (sand works well) to aid in absorbing the energy if it were to break or come loose.
Just an FYI, in your chevy you can remove the "storage" box on the driver side and add a second battery for using accessories (winch, inverter, amp, etc) so that you isolate from your starter battery. I have a second battery installed for mine that is isolated except when I throw a switch which activates a solenoid for charging purposes Also acts as a backup in case the main dies I also upgraded my alternator from the stock 105a (suburban, rear air, etc) to a 140a out of a '99 escalade for more power
That's very true Jon. My storage box wasn't even there with I got the truck. I use the battery tray to hold my tools when I'm working on it...lol. Great tips nonetheless. I'm sure it will help others out. Good luck,G.
There's a lot of folks on here worried about water intrusion. On any winch, cover it during any water crossing with an air tight bag with no holes and cinch it tight around the unit as low as it will go, even a garbage bag will work. The trapped air will prevent water from enveloping the unit even though the bottom is open. You're welcome 😉
Thank you for the thorough video. I just purchased the same winch with same hitch receiver set up to use on my vehicle and your wiring instruction will be invaluable.
Absolutely bud! I have rebuilt and restored many Warn 8274 & M8000 winches! Your knowledge and concept of winch functionality is top notch and point ON! Video and speaking skills are over the top!.. don’t waste THIS talent! I’m serious!!☝️☝️👍👍👍👍👊👊👊
Thanks man! I appreciate the nice comments. As someone that's gone trough many, you much certainly know the subject. I'm glad my novice research and understanding stood out and came through. Good luck, G.
one of the BEST VIDEOS I've seen in CZcams, and in here a lot! i even learn from it! wish i would've seen this about 8 months ago, i paid over a grand for Bush a small tree removal. i could've done it myself.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Yeah, it can get expensive to remove things- which is why I went this direction. It works great for these kinds of things. Good luck, G.
well done on the video. I've had mine for 3+ years now on my full-size crawler. no tensioner. swapped in masterpull rope. it has never let me down on the Rubicon Trail or Fordyce, etc. I can confirm it draws alot, so watch your volt meter. sometimes I've had to double up due to reaching load limit at 3-4 wraps. this is expected since I'm 7500lbs unladen. I have cover that keeps it element life continuing.
+Wh1t3Nukle Thanks! It sounds like you've got good use from yours over the years. How much syn rope where you able to fit on the drum? That is, if you did take it to full capacity. Thanks, G.
Fantastic video. I was very surprised at the duty cycle. My winch spec is 1 minute on, 2 minutes off. As stated in the manual, this is to let the battery recover. First I should mention I have a Quadra Tech 9000 lbs winch. The difference between the 9000 lbs and 12000 lbs is gear ratio. I found out the hard way. The most important part of a winch is the battery. If the battery is no good, neither is your winch. Cost me $600 for a glorified taxi ride. Got my self unstuck, but killed the battery. Long story, save the details. Must laugh at the trees being pulled. Have a YJ. I had the winch hooked up to a branch of a holly tree. I had the wife winching while I was cutting. This was when I was on a extension ladder. Gave her the signal to winch. She did not stop. She pulled the whole tree down. The stump was over 18" around. The neighbor, professional tree feller, was amazed that happened. This was done with a relatively new 850amp hr battery. Long story short. I love my Quadra tech winch. I have had issues with it. Never left me stranded. The tech support is unbelievable. My winch was 5 years old and they replaced it. I do not think HF would do the same.
Thanks John, glad you liked it. I leave the vehicle running to help with any battery drain. Glad they took care of you. I agree- HF after that long probably would not do the same. Take care, G.
@@ghostses Your welcome. I always run the engine too while winching. My battery died because it was old and and under rated. It did come back to life after sitting for an hour or two.. At least to start it. The winch will pull 200 amps plus under full load. Most alternators will only put out 100 amps. This is why you need a high amp battery if you wish to get the most out of your winch. That and the higher the voltage that is maintained, the less stress on the motor. Higher voltage = less amps = less heat.
Very true John. Check out my review on the TackLife lithium jumper pack. It could be a good thing for situations just like you described. It's proven itself to be one of my better purchases. I make no money off my reviews/videos- so you get it straight as I see things. Good luck, G. czcams.com/video/GE8JV-S4NpU/video.html
I have seen 3 or 4 iterations of the 12,000 - - I'm one of those who pays attention to detail like the proximate location of the plug for the remote on the side of the box, the position of the springs on the coil bar and the method of attachment for the box to the winch unit. On yours at 12:06 of your video it shows the bracket for the solenoid box - - the bracket itself is attached to the box via screws with nuts and the bracket has one screw on each bracket at the back to lock it in place. My brackets are attached with phillips head screws that screw into the box and where your screws thread into your bracket mine is not threaded but rather those screws attach to another semicurved bracket piece with threads in that second piece and the front curved piece on yours has a much deeper curl to it whereas mine you locate it on the bar and push down and it pops over the bar the you clamp it with a phillips head by tightening that second piece around the bar and it clamps sort of like something you'd attach to the handlebars of a bicycle. Your plug for the remote appears to be near the front of the box whereas mine is near the center but slightly to the rear and that was where I encountered the interference. The coils on the springs that maintain pressure on the bar keeping the cable level as it coils on the spool attach to the front on mine with the extended arm part of the spring attaching on the rear. I could slide the remote control wire on to the plug but not the slightly larger wireless remote piece and that was my clearance issue. In the other videos about 12,000 Badlands winches which you can click on right next to yours the plug for the remote on the box appears to be in 3 different locations and some have the coil part of the 2 springs attached to the front while others have them on the rear on the leveling bar. I build my own race cars and do a lot of welding and fabrication and on occasion may have re-engineered things I think the automaker could have done better or in a more practical way so I'm used to making things work. My installation will be a bit more involved because its in my V-nose enclosed race car trailer which has plywood flooring which you absolutely don't bolt a winch to so I will have wafer the plywood with metal plates and weld a cross piece to the frame underneath and attach the bottom plate to that to properly anchor the winch
I replaced the cheap grease in mine when I got it: Then without the extension kit I just wired mine to a 1000 amp rated starter solenoid under the hood with my switch in the cab: Now for my winches the 12000lb "HF" mounter it to a modified 5th wheel hitch on a king pin so that I could use the winch at different angles to my truck pined through a mounting plate for the winch to the hitch with roller bar's in my staker pockets: The roller's were set up on a bar and lined up with the different winch position's on the hitch, from near the cab to the end of the bed and across the with of the bed to the other side each roller had a cable tension break bar on it: The system was set up this way to skid log's, to set up a sky cable to lift log's up steep slopes and other thing like this.
Great video, this has been very helpful in trying to diagnose why my 61889 won't engage. After taking it apart three times, checking that everything meshes and nothing is broken, and reassembling it again, now it's working. I love that it's fixed, but hate not knowing what was wrong. Anyway, point of interest: the drive shaft is an 8mm hex, and viewers wanting to test theirs can just use an 8mm Allen key.
+Matt Ion Thanks Matt! I'm glad it was helpful in getting yours going again even though you don't know what was wrong. I know the feeling all too well. I've taken apart many broken things and simply put them back together and they just started working leaving me without any clue as to what was wrong...lol. Working is working I guess, and hope yours stays that way. Good tip on the hex size. I was going to run the example with a drill so I made the driver. But in hind-sight, and since I just spun it by hand, I could have saved myself some time and just used a key. Oh well...lol. Good luck, G.
+ghostses Well after it failed AGAIN, I spent a bunch more time with it and finally found the problem: on yours, the output sprocket is locked to the output planetary with a flange and two silver screws (visible at 26:37). On mine, there's just a spring clip on the sprocket to keep it from sliding into the assembly too far (don't want it to rub on the gears), and it relies on the whole drive assembly being tight in the housing to not pop out. Except it's apparently loose, and the sprocket keeps slipping out of the output assembly, as it's only in there by a quarter inch or so. I didn't see the spring clip you mention on the output sprocket of the intermediate assembly, thanks to all the grease, but assuming it's there, I flipped over the teflon washer/spacer that goes between the two planetaries (the one you show at 19:32), figuring that would space them out a bit more. So far so good... If it slips out again, I might try some short flathead screws in there to hold the spring clip in place. I'll be sure to take some pics for you, too :) I found a good write-up on a rebuild of a similar winch (9,000lb, Engo brand, but obviously the same manufacturer), and theirs has the flange and screws on the output as well: www.wranglerforum.com/f282/engo-winch-maintenance-repair-write-up-1549369.html
+Matt Ion If I had to guess Matt, your winch may have been missing a part from the factory. The flange you mention with the two screws at 26:37, I believe, is a spring thrust washer (for lack of a better term). It's bent up on the sides to act like a spring and keeps the gear train pushed together. I would venture to guess, mine also has a snap ring but under the thrust washer. I was unable to confirm by watching my video though. Are there two threaded holes on yours where one could've been installed? If you start watching when I put it together for demonstration purposes, you should be able to spot the snap rings on both the input and intermediate assemblies as I rotate them. czcams.com/video/TN5vAAdKP94/video.html I did look at an Engo parts breakdown and see the thrust washer (They call it a gear retaining ring, but I honestly believe it's a trust washer) and screws (parts 23 and 25). I wonder if you could order them and try it out- assuming its the same. mediacdn.shopatron.com/media/mfg/5150/media_document/4538/LargeWinchINST.pdf?1299773251 I'm guessing you're outside of the warranty period, so this might be an inexpensive option to try. Hope this helps, G.
Those look like the right parts... The Badland manual doesn't show those as separate parts, so maybe it's intended to not have that retainer. I tried putting in a couple short screws to hold the snap ring but the assembly wouldn't seat all the way in, like the screw heads were poking out too far. I'll look into ordering those parts though, shouldn't be too expensive.
+Matt Ion I agree, they look correct to me as well. I zoomed in on the HF parts breakdown, and it appears like it has one to me, but they're not breaking out the parts like Engo did. They might be considering it a complete assembly- who knows. If you do get the parts, feedback with how it works out. It might help others out. G.
I Have a warn m12000, warn 8274, And the harbor freight 9000lb winches. I'm happy with the harbor freight winch. I use them with my off road trucks and no issue. its a good winch for the price!
Underrated winch IMO, the re-greasing would for sure quite it greatly and reduce even more friction. We are gonna mount one in the back inside a suzuki samurai tin top lol, overkill however the price is just perfect.
I agree Thanos! I never hooked it up before re-greasing it so I don't know what it would have sounded like out of the box. I can say it is really quiet in use after what I did and the only thing I really hear is the motor running. I can't hear the gearing. It might be a little overkill for you, but I think it would last longer since it would see lighter loads. I agree, the price is just perfect. I'm still really satisfied with mine. Good luck, G.
Screw pin shackles need to have threads fully engaged on the shackle ear. (The pin should be flush with the outside of the shackle body or slightly past). The pin head should make contact with the shackle body. Bolt nut and cotter shackles need to have the bolt and nut properly secured with the cotter pin attached.
+edog1955
Looks like you got your settings fixed since I can reply now! Good deal, G.

I want to add my thanks for this video. It was extremely thorough. 8 years old and still providing great information.
Thanks! Glad it's still providing good info. Take care, and good luck, G.
Bought the Harbor Freight 12000 winch several months ago. Still in the box. This was very informative. Had not thought of using to remove small trees. Thanks for posting
That's cool. Glad you liked it. Yeah, that's mainly what I use it for and it works great. Good luck, G.
This is the best hour I’ve ever spent on CZcams. Thank you!
Glad you found it informative.. Thanks and take care, G.
I second that ! Very usefull informations. Thank you for this share.
Harbor freight should put this videos link on their website because of how useful it is. they suck when it comes to directions. great video
E3guyy LOL. I agree, their manuals leave a lot to be desired. Thanks! G.
+ghostses You did an awesome job ... Glad I came across your video .. this is my 1st time buying and installing a winch .. thanks very much for taking the time to do this .. :)
Steve Ruddy
Thanks Steve! I'm glad you found it useful. Good luck with your install and be safe! G.
LOL, Thanks! Some don't like my style but I try to give complete information- within reason. I'm glad you liked it! Good luck to you, G.
In fact I went and got one yesterday for 289.00 with my coupon :)
TNBigHorn
Not a bad deal. Once you get it setup and used, let me know what you think of it. G.
I will.. I picked up the winch mount yesterday and I'm going to attempt the install Saturday.. I'll let you know how it goes.
Good deal! G.
This is an absolutely-superb review of the winch and its inner workings. I never understood planetary gearing before, but I now have a reasonable appreciation of why it's employed, and how it functions. Thanks very much for a very thoughtful, obviously-experienced session.
Well thanks Steven! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck and take care, G.
One of the best [thorough and comprehsive] videos that I have ever seen on You Tube. I just bought the same model and plan to mount it to a big Ford tractor for work in the woods. Thank you so much
Thanks Ed! I'm glad you liked it. I hope it works out well for you. Good luck, G.
Incredibly thorough and informative. This video could be a technical service instruction or vehicle recovery safety video! Well done.
Well thanks! I'm glad you found it useful.
Thanks Moe! Glad you found it informative. Take care, G.
Just have to second what others have already said; excellent comprehensive review! Concise & in depth in all the right places. The safety advisory & information (hook up, differences between snatch & recovery, etc) regarding winch use are worth their weight in gold alone. Thanks for the all the work you put into making this video.
+Grim Proteus
Thanks! I'm glad you found it informative and useful. Take care, G.
What else can I say? Ditto! 👍👍
This man is a genius!
He’s absolutely brilliant at what he does!
I wouldn't go that far, but thanks!
What a Great Video .. It addressed every concern.
The parts data and sequence of events flowed like water.
+TangentJim
Well thanks Jim!
You did a great job of the review and it's possibilities keep up this style and you will have a lot of faithfull fans watching your channel
I'm winch shopping now (never had one before) and you probably have just saved me hundreds of dollars in the future. Before I mount it, I'll break it down to make sure things are lubed up properly. Actually, those safety tips are worth even more. Much appreciated!
Good deal Ed! Glad you found it informative. Take care, G.
Thank you, I also have purchased one of these lately, and learned a few things from your video, greatly appreciated. Now I need to see if I can find one of those grabbers and that grabbing chain.
No problem Tom. Glad you found it informative. The grubbers were purchased at northerntool.com. Good luck, G.
Glad you liked it Gregory! I can't speak for the synthetic, but know more care needs to be used. The wire works well enough for me. Good luck, G.
This is one of the best breakdown / reviews I've ever come across. Great job, and thank you for your attention to detail! Very professionally executed.
Thanks Kevin! I'm glad you liked it. Good luck, G.
I don't think anyone has ever sold me so much on a product in my life. Bravo, great video!
4 years ago at $294.99 and today its $299.99 not bad. I may pick it up for my gin pole idea I have.
You are an amazing teacher, so many mechanical videos suck or dont answer my questions.
You let me rebuild my winch! Thank you! Time well spent.
Thanks Tyler! Glad you found it useful. Take care, G.
Hey man, Great video! Lots of good detail .. thats the way demo videos should be. Thanks for taking the time to document and share! Have a great day!!
Power Addicts - Jeep, car and motorcycle tips Thanks man! I'm glad you liked it. Take care, G.
niceee! i've been wondering about this winch considering most winches are now outsourced and re branded. Thanks for posting. (watching now)
Abiúd Betancourt
Thanks! I'm not sure if it's a re-brand but it works extremely well for me nonetheless. Good luck, G.
another trick for those cotter pins is you take a needle nose pliers and roll the ends in this completely gets rid of any chance the cotter pin could snag you and also provides slightly better pin retention because the 2 ends look more like the cotter pin eye
Good tip! Thanks for sharing. Take care, G.
Well done.
Thanks Ron! Take care, G.
That's cool! Take care, G.
I got the wireless control also. What I have noticed, there is a second or two delay from when you release the button (regardless if you are paying out or taking up slack). Just be careful taking up the slack, the delay can be dangerous.
+tc1uscg
I don't think the delay on mine is quite that long, but there certainly is one for sure.
Thanks Paddy! Glad it was informative. Good luck with your installation. Take care, G.
The best "how to" video I've ever seen on CZcams. A bit slow on the dialogue, but this actually helps because there's very little pausing and backing up to repeat something. Great job ghostses. Keep 'em coming..
+Alexander Berlin
Thanks Alexander!
Thanks.
That's cool Dwayne! Glad it was helpful. Good luck, G.
Wow. I learned a lot! Good info on the safety portion as well. I was planning on getting the 12k winch but was a bit hesitant cuz of the brand but I'm sold now.
Glad you liked it. For what I paid, and what I use it for- I have zero complaints. Good luck, G.
Thanks Gary! Glad it was helpful. Good luck, G.
Gary Lundberg hey Gary the winches at that price is the18,000 lbs version about 699 bucks there
Excellent video! Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Good luck, G.
I'm considering buying the champion 12000 lb winch from Costco.. It's going to see very minimal use and since it's Cosco I think I'll take the chance...
That's cool. If you go with one from Costco, feedback with your thoughts. It might help others with other options to look at. Take care, G.
thx. will do.
1HeavyHitr
Very good! G.
@@ghostses Cheers!
@@Leon-wz1js Good deal! G.
So that's how they work . Good video G
Yep! Thanks Roland, G.
Great video. Excellent time spent explaining everything about the winch, how to use it properly, and safety points.
Thanks William. I'm glad you liked it. G.
You sound like Mr. RODGERS 😂
I was thinking Forest Gump. I'd agree though, does sound like Mr Rogers too! Either way, I'd trust both equally :)
That's cool! G.
I get that too....lol. Take care, G.
What an education there! Just got my first winch, to use just as you have shown here. Badland/Harbor Freight should pay you for this. Thank you for your time.
Thanks Bryan! Glad you found it informative. They keep saying the checks in the mail, but for some reason it never comes....lol. Good luck! G.
bought this winch....piece of typical Harbor Freight junk. We had a small tree fall across the road, blocking us from getting out.....oh boy.....we get to use the new winch! We cut the tree in half..hooked up the winch....put a strain on it....pulled for 8 seconds and it overheated and turned off...so we let it cool...used it again for 8 seconds before it quit again....long story short
..took an hour to move the tree. We replaced that Harbor Freight scrap metal with a 15000# Warn real Winch. The Harbor Freight winch makes your rig look like it has a winch and that is all. Video says 5% duty cycle....reality is 1% duty cycle....PURE JUNK....
+Bill Waldron
That's unfortunate. My experience with it has been great. Glad you found a better solution for yourself. Take care, G.
Thanks Jose! Hope it works out well for you. Good luck, G.
I just purchased this winch. Your video is excellent 👍. Very informative and in depth. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks! Good luck to you. Take care, G.
Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful. Everything noted is extremely important to remain as safe as possible.! Good luck, G.
Thanks for your time. I was on the fence about purchasing a Bandland winch, but not anymore.
That's cool Steve! Good luck, G.
By far the Best winch video on CZcams I have seen so far ...thanks for sharing .
Glad you liked it. Take care, G.
@@ghostses you as well 😊
Very in-depth review of this winch, nice and thank you. From what I found is that it really does pull hard! I pulled a 25,000 pound shipping container with a 3:1 snatch block and it did a great job! maybe someday I'll pull it apart and lube it up like you did.
Thanks! That's a pretty impressive pull! Glad it worked out well for you. Take care, G.
what I did for my pickup is welded a 1 7/8 in. ball hitch to my winch mount so i can put winch on front or back, used welding cable and welding connectors for pos and neg. The ball mount allows the winch to swing in direction of pull so cable wraps on better and reduces friction
Cool! G.
Thank you for not having annoying music. Thumbs up!
Right there with you Vic! Glad you liked it. Take care, G.
Nicely done. You should rename it and repost it for how to maintain and respect your winch. I've been wheeling for a long time and had to learn all of that the hard way. I only came on here to see about that winch because my nephew just bought one. Very informative. 👍🤙✌
Thanks! Hope it works out well for your nephew. Good luck, G.
This is probably one of most informative videos I have ever watched. I recently purchased the same winch and gained a ton of knowledge by watching. An awesome job! Thanks.
Thanks Joel! I'm glad you liked it and picked up some information. Take care, G.
This video is still very relevant as of March 2020. I was able to get my badlands set up just fine with this. 10/10 with such in depth information. Well done.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful with getting yours going despite it's age. Good luck and take care, G.
That's a cool setup Richard! Good tip- but yes I knew where everything was. That is something to look for though. Take care, G.
Thanks for the detail level and Trade (several) knowledge & care used in this video. As an Electrician who works with Millwrights and Mechanics, respect and humility are the first thing in any trade, you did a great job, I learned a lot.
No problem Dave! I'm glad you found it informative. As for respect and humility, I couldn't agree more! Good luck, G.
I'm in the process of buying the same winch and pulling on a few trees and such. You done a great job on explaining some key points of safety and how it preformed for you.
That's cool Frank! Glad it was helpful. Good luck with your setup and tasks. Take care, G.
Good tip Jason! I actually got an old rim after shooting this for that very purpose. Take care, G.
After your breakdown of the gear ⚙ system and relube, I will be considering the Badlands winches when purchase time comes along. Very well done video. Thanks for your wisdom. 👍💯🍻
Thanks Gabriel! Take care, G.
Extremely helpful. Really learned a lot from your breakdown of the gear system. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Thanks Karen! I'm glad you found it useful. Good luck, G.
this is about the best review I've seen on a winch. I've been looking at numerous budget winches and I'm pretty well sold on this one after watching this. I'll definitely be taking it apart and lubing it like in the video. Thanks for the information!
+James Griffin
Thanks James!
Thanks! Pretty interesting products. Thanks for sharing, G.
Within your sapling pull demo, you have the hook facing down, yet earlier you stated it should point up. Thought you'd want to know. Rest of video was clear. Thanks.
Yes- I did. It was a mistake on my part. Learn from that and ensure the setup is best. Take care, G.
I didn't know you could pull trees with a winch, now I'm impressed.
Your sure can! Take care, G.
Excellent Video! Thank-You. Essential watching for those who use a winch esp. newbies.
Thanks! Glad it was informative. Take care, G.
Great video, just bought one of these to pull some future firewood into an easier to access spot.
Thanks! Hope it works out for you. Good luck with your projects. Take care, G.
I'm getting ready to install that exact winch on my dodge ram 3500 dully for our camping trip out west. I'm setting it up on the cradle so I can use it from either end of the vehicle with quick disconnect for the power. Thx again.
Good deal! Hope your setup goes well. Good luck, G.
What I done with the winch on my car hauler was to put the battery on the Taylor. Then I wired up my truck to where my truck would keep the battery on the Taylor charged and it would stay charged all the time and this has worked very well,, just a thought,,, Harry
Good idea Harry! Take care, G.
Excellent video! Greatly appreciate all the safety pointers you mentioned. Same deal here with wanting to use a winch to clear out brush on my property. Thanks amigo!
Thanks! It works great for clearing things out. Good luck, G.
This video represents the good that is in this world, it's fantastic!
Thanks Alessio! Glad you found it informative. Take care, G.
@@ghostses I recently bought the new HF "Apex" winch and I installed it yesterday.
Good deal! I like the styling better on the Apex. Hope it works out well. G.
very nice video. Got to say i have never thought of using a winch for pulling trees. I have a few I would like to try that on.
Thanks! It works great for pulling trees. Good luck, G.
When you put a load on the winch, put a canvas bag or an old backpack loaded with stuff (sand works well) to aid in absorbing the energy if it were to break or come loose.
Good tip Harry! Thanks for sharing. Good luck, G.
Just an FYI, in your chevy you can remove the "storage" box on the driver side and add a second battery for using accessories (winch, inverter, amp, etc) so that you isolate from your starter battery. I have a second battery installed for mine that is isolated except when I throw a switch which activates a solenoid for charging purposes
Also acts as a backup in case the main dies
I also upgraded my alternator from the stock 105a (suburban, rear air, etc) to a 140a out of a '99 escalade for more power
Good tip! Take care, G.
Echoing TN Bighorn below. Great review and packed full of safety. Really an excellent and informative demo.
Thanks Doug! I'm glad it was helpful and good luck, G.
I don't even have a winch, but watched this. I did find it informative. great video!
That's cool Maury! Glad you found it informative. Take care, G.
You are more knowledgeable with this product that any employee at that facility
Thanks! Good luck, G.
Great video sir! Thank you for your time and help, I just purchased one today and did no how to wire it up! Great blessings to you and your family!
Thanks John! Good luck with yours, G.
Thank you for the thorough video. I just purchased the same winch with same hitch receiver set up to use on my vehicle and your wiring instruction will be invaluable.
jsr400064 No problem! I'm glad you found it useful. Good luck, G.
Great job buddy
Thanks for show US 👍🏾
Your video is very helpful for whoever wants to install a winch in their truck like me.
Thanks Oscar! Glad it was helpful. Good luck, G.
Warn should hire you!! You would nail for them!!!
LOL! Thanks! Glad you liked the video. Take care, G.
Stellar video and common sense approach!!! Extremely well done Sir! Thank You!
Thanks Jack, glad you found it informative. Take care and good luck, G.
one of the BEST VIDEOS I've seen in CZcams, and in here a lot! i even learn from it! wish i would've seen this about 8 months ago, i paid over a grand for Bush a small tree removal. i could've done it myself.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Yeah, it can get expensive to remove things- which is why I went this direction. It works great for these kinds of things. Good luck, G.
I bought the Badlands 12000 for $320 after tax. I will mount it on my home made flat bed truck. I will be uploading some videos soon. Awesome video.
That's cool Jorge! Hope it works out well for you, G.
@@ghostses Thanks. I may get to try the winch Sunday. I have a few things to do before I can mount on the bed of my truck.
@@cutweldngrind That's cool. G.
well done on the video.

Thanks! It sounds like you've got good use from yours over the years. How much syn rope where you able to fit on the drum? That is, if you did take it to full capacity. Thanks, G.

Wow! 20' over stock- that's impressive. Thanks for the response. I'm sure it will help others out. Good luck, G.

Good info Gary! Take care, G.
Thoroughly enjoyed this whole video. Learned new info.
Thanks Manny! Good luck, G.
I just bought the badland 12k winch. Great video, and thank you for all the safety tips and advice.
Thanks Steven! Glad you liked it. Good luck with yours, G.
Sounds like a cool setup Steven! Take care, G.
Thank's but I did not tell all.
+Matt Ion
Thanks Matt!
I'll be sure to take some pics for you, too :)
I found a good write-up on a rebuild of a similar winch (9,000lb, Engo brand, but obviously the same manufacturer), and theirs has the flange and screws on the output as well: www.wranglerforum.com/f282/engo-winch-maintenance-repair-write-up-1549369.html
+Matt Ion
If I had to guess Matt, your winch may have been missing a part from the factory.
If you start watching when I put it together for demonstration purposes, you should be able to spot the snap rings on both the input and intermediate assemblies as I rotate them.
czcams.com/video/TN5vAAdKP94/video.html
I did look at an Engo parts breakdown and see the thrust washer (They call it a gear retaining ring, but I honestly believe it's a trust washer) and screws (parts 23 and 25). I wonder if you could order them and try it out- assuming its the same.
mediacdn.shopatron.com/media/mfg/5150/media_document/4538/LargeWinchINST.pdf?1299773251
I'm guessing you're outside of the warranty period, so this might be an inexpensive option to try.
+Matt Ion
I agree, they look correct to me as well.
That's cool! I'm still satisfied with mine- especially for the cost. Take care, G.
Excellent video! I just installed the 9000# Badland on my Ranger for winching firewood out of my woodlot. Learned some stuff.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Good luck with your 9k! Take care, G.
I dont get disassembling the product...arent you voiding the warranty? I liked the video very much tho!!! Do more please.
I did so to put in a known good grease- as well as show how it worked. But yes, I probably voided the warranty. Glad you liked it. G.
Wow! Great video. Very clear video and audio. Love not having music.
Thanks! G.
Thanks for the tips! Take care, G.
