  • I'm joined by both Sheryl Walker (a stoma nurse) and Dr. Ryan Suri (General Surgeon) as we explore some these topics and questions:
    - What do you wish you knew before surgery that you didn't know until after surgery?
    - Thoughts on reversal surgery.
    - Sex and intimacy following ostomy surgery.
    - Possible surgical complications affecting sexual function.
    - Benefits of keeping an ostomy over a reconnection (internal pouch).
    - How does our body adjust to losing a colon?
    - If you were given the opportunity, would you have a reversal?
    - Should we encourage patients to have a reversal?
    - Risks of ostomy reversal surgery.
    - Has public perception about ostomies changed? What else needs to be done?

    Thank you so much for the ostomy information. I have referred to your videos again and again during the time I had my temporary ileostomy. I was thoroughly grossed out and in shock when I got home with my ostomy. Your videos addressed issues I had in a very common sense and detailed manner. A great resource for new ostomates! Thank you for sharing.

      rkgsd. It scared me! I've been told the reversal goes a lot easier than the ostomy. I know every case is different, but damn! My surgeon is not easy to talk too but a lot of people told me he's very good so I went with him. I just wish I could talk to him better. I always feel I'm getting the bum's rush.

    I had a reversal done and for me it didn’t work, but I don’t mind having the bag, I’ve had it for 20 years now. At first I was very against it and not happy at all about the idea, but I got used to it and it definitely was not as bad as I thought it would be!

      @@ShyAnn291 Thank you. I am actually going to have my second reversal attempt since the first one failed. My surgeon said it failed cuz I still had stool in my colon. Not a proper bowel prep was done that time. Now I'm so nervous about my upcoming reversal.

    Hi, I was wondering if you could answer this question for me. I am trying yo switch from one product to another and I been having trouble with the new wafer sticking, I have been using the old film skin spray of other product do to having a bad skin irritation . Do you know how long it will take to have that film remove from skin so I can effectively start using other product? I noticed to film does not come off with soap and water immediately.

    • @VeganOstomy
      @VeganOstomy  Před 6 lety

      +Nahomie Riche The barrier spray should degrade pretty quickly (less than a week) if left untouched, but I would use mild soap and water and an adhesive remover to make sure all residue is off the skin. With the new wafer, be sure to heat the wafer up and apply gentle pressure when putting not on for at least one minute to get the best chance of the adhesive working.

    When I awoke from surgery last month my doctor told me I had a rupture and now have colostomy bag. He said something about how my colon they had so much trouble getting gauze or something off it. I was also told I could have a reversal. I have an innie due to blood flow not able to be stretched up thru my fat tummy. I will not look into a reversal my luck is not good and I have had too many issues. Now I just need to find a gab that will work for me. So far the majority leak under the wafer and fall off.

    A couple of times my stoma has grown or come out more, what can I do to prevent that?
    Also,does putting pressure on stoma through a belt, seatbelt or depends (urinary incontinence) affect or hurt stomach?

    • @VeganOstomy
      @VeganOstomy  Před 4 lety

      Stomas can change sizes for various reasons. Most are out of our control and unless it's causing problems, you shouldn't worry about it. Here's a video explaining more : czcams.com/video/SvcIrtX5Haw/video.html
      Pressure using those items shouldn't cause any pain or discomfort unless they are on really tight. A stoma guard, stretchy fabric, and wearing them loose can help.

    Hello 👋 I going to have my Ostomy surgery in July. My question is how much supplies should I take with me when I go on my cruise in September

    • @VeganOstomy
      @VeganOstomy  Před 6 lety

      Hi Lisa,
      Hopefully, you'll be able to establish a consistent routine by the time you go on your cruise. Then you'll be able to know approximately how often you change your appliance. As a general rule, many people will bring 2 or 3 times the supplies they usually need just in case. Because you'll be on a cruise ship, I would also recommend some kind of anti-diarrheal product and gelling supplies to put in your pouch just in case you come down with an illness or food poisoning.
      I tend to error on the side of packing too much rather than too few ostomy supplies.
      Good luck with your surgery and have a fun cruise!

      I suggest taking more then you think you’ll need, because leaks happen to all ostomates and you’d hate to not have what you need.

    Nearly 3 and a half weeks after surgery with IBD with colitis still in recovery pain going on a well earned abroad holiday next year am scared flying I’ve been told my bag will get filled with air when going up it can take a long time until you can go to the toilet to let the air out am scared what if it bursts am I being silly sorry new to all this and it’s all mind blowing isn’t it learning

      @VeganOstomy  Před 3 lety +1

      I wouldn't worry about the bag ballooning while in the air. Plan your flight so you are next to a restroom if it's a concern, but I don't think it's going to be a problem 👍

      Hi Jeff, no ED problems for me. My surgeon was really good with following up on that. Sometimes there is nerve damage than can have an effect on getting/maintaining an erection. Sometimes it's temporary, but can sometimes be permanent. The type of surgery and the complexity of it can often determine the risk factor. If you have concerns, I would suggest speaking with your surgeon.

      Sounds like your stuff and my stuff started about the same time. I tried the link to your webpage (I am getting TOO used to CZcams) and it gave me the e-mail is already in use error message too and would not let me fix it. It looks great though. I've never made a page but it looks like it will be easy to navigate and have a lot of useful information.

      I'd really like to sort out the error messages that you two are getting. Can you email me with details (browser and device model) and the email address you've tried to use? Sometimes, if someone has already posted a comment but not registered, it will say the email is already on use. But it shouldn't be such a barrier and I'd rather fix this!

    I wish I could have been there. I've been looking through your videos and others and this looks as close as I'm going to get to the subject, so should I be doing anything to keep my rectum/anus in shape? I know I will have to ask my surgeon about one thing in particular, but that will be the last time I see him on my way out the door :P I was wondering about enemas or possibly anal beads to keep it health and "in shape" so to speak. Also has anyone passed a tiny amount of gas while their anus was out of commission? I hope I don't lose you after this one, Eric :)

    • @VeganOstomy
      @VeganOstomy  Před 5 lety +2

      That's actually a good question. I wasn't given any specific instructions to keep the rectum and anus in shape, but maybe that's because it was only temporary. I'm sure it can't hurt to do some Kegel exercises or something like that. If your surgeon can answer that, I'd love to know what they say!
      And it's normal for gas, stool, blood, and mucus to pass through an inactive rectum. Happens to pretty much everyone, but if there's excess or ongoing bleeding I'd definately want a doctor to know about it.

    • @johndifrancisco3642
      @johndifrancisco3642 Před 5 lety

      Whoa! No blood yet, but thanks for the warning! My surgeon doesn't seem to like talking much, but I'll let you know if I get any info out of him.

      @VeganOstomy  Před 5 lety +1

      Don't want to scare you with that. You may not have any blood. Some people do, some don't. If it happens it's usually normal 😉
