When I went to Vietnam in 1967 I took a little tape player with me on which I had taped some songs by Donovan. I figured that in lonely times over there in that jungle I could get some feelings of being back home. Donovan's voice could soothe things even in that hell hole called Vietnam.
Sadly a "Hell hole" AMERICA created leaving so many little children behind they also 'Created' without ever being there as FATHERS .
A hellhole that was completely unnecessary too, as it turned out, but that monster Henry Kissinger couldn't wait for the death toll to get started. I skipped the first draft lottery since I knew I'd move to Canada if I got a low number, but mine was in the 300s, so I joined the Peace Corps instead and have never regretted it!
Thank you for your service.
All these years later I hope that your life is peaceful.
Well done Donavan, a wee lad from Glasgow made it to the big time… and to duet with the angelic crystal…absolutely lovely. Good for you my friend…Scotland is proud of you. 🏴
There are no words to express how beautiful this is. This is a masterpiece pure and simple. Music at its finest.
I LOVE this song, and Donovan and Crystal Gayle are perfect for this heart warming song of LOVE. The first time I listened to it I actually got a couple tears in my eyes. As I have metastatic prostate cancer and one of my cancer doctors told me I'm late stage 4 and it is very aggressive I do spend some of my remaining days listening to LOVE songs such as this one. They warm my heart and remind me of my 45 years I've been lucky enough to have with my beautiful wife, Deb. I am so fortunate to have this LOVE affair with her. God Bless each of you and please focus on the happiness in your lives.
Best wishes! May you celebrate every day that you awake breathing. I have stage 4 colon and liver cancer. I've prepared as much as possible; made my cremation urn and placed my headstone. I've also made a list of songs to be played at my celebration of life. This is one of them. Good luck to us both and to all the other cancer fighters out there.
Apologies, Comment is from David Kennett. Beatrice is my wife, support, ostomy nurse and best friend of 43 years.
Bless you. Music is great for soothing the soul. I hope you are keeping comfortable. Lots of love xx
And in the midst of chaos, a little bit of heaven springs up and all is calmed. What a beautiful duet.
So true!! (Maybe that might be one of the reasons why I'm listening to this song for weeks, every 'calm-seeking weekend', over and over ...,-0)
Some years ago, a friend of mine was driving in rural Cork, Ireland and picked up a hitch-hiker one late wintry night. It turned out to be Donovan.
After nearly 50 years it still touches me deeply.
it was 1974 when i first heard Donovan's song. 50 years ago. still shines brightly!!!
thank you Hugh, Donovan was a musical poet, and a genre unto himself. I love this!!
Wow!!! How beautiful! Donovan still looking and sounding like the old days. Crystal has such a pure, clear voice.
Yes, I absolutely appreciated Crystal and Donovan's duet! I'm 71 and I love it today as much as I did the first time i heard it! ❤
Same here, at age 81, still groove to it. It was '71 when I first heard it.
I have never heard this before. What a joy !!! I am 75 and a Donavan fan in the mid sixties.
best version for all time
Yet another beautiful song I adore from a joyous time of peace and love. Oh, why did it all end?
I think that we all got a little bit older........(kindest thoughts to you, from me here in Australia...).
@@steinrich56 Thanks, kind thoughts from me in England! I feel sorry for young people now especially the way the world is. We had the best of it for sure. By the way, I visited Australia in 2006 and it was beautiful as I had imagined.
I can't believe how beautiful they sound together.
Occasionally I stumble upon a Gem here on CZcams and this is one of those Gems. Fabulous and thanks for sharing.
This performance is like a rare wind that blows gently enough to catch the sail of your soul and lifts you just when you needed it
That was beautiful. You defined my feeling. Your comment. lifted my soul.
Crystal Gayle is one beautiful creation of a woman by God. I love her beauty and her singing.
In this duet from 1981, Donovan still displays the youth, fresh, mellow, and folksy song of his styling from the 1960s.
Her beauty is only matched by her stunning voice 👌
What makes this even more impressive is that, according to a commenter who was there and on the stage crew, these two didn't rehearse the song before the live taping. Wow.
A gorgeous version of a beautiful song. Crystal was in top form.
I had never heard this before. Absolutely beautiful.
Never guessed this guy ever sang any good music. I guess life is about learning-never stops till you die.
What a genius singer he is, and the combination with Crystal Gayle is amazing. Brought tears to my eyes.
This is one of the most beautiful duets I've ever seen and heard. Two supreme artists weaving their magic into a musical tapestry. Crystal Gayle is absolutely gorgeous here. I wonder if the audience appreciate what they just witnessed.
I never really liked Donovan in the 1960s..... but here... his voice is more mature. I expected Crystal Gayle's voice and persona to be incredible as always.... but these two voices stunned me with their blended harmonies. Wow!
Gawd this is gorgeous. And so are Donovan and Crystal ❤❤❤❤❤
Their voices sound surprisingly lovely together.
I’m lovin that purple guitar, beautiful hair, and lovely duo. Sweet sweet sweet. Thank you Donovan & Crystal! 💋
Such an underrated duo. I wish this was spread across more platforms. Their voices are so complimentary. I feel the folk roll through my bones on this one.
that's amazing, Crystal Gayle elevated Donovan's game, or I haven't heard Donovan live in so long I forgot how rich his voice is without 'production'
A hauntingly beautiful song. Crystal sings it with such pain and beauty. Master class right there.
I need this kind of music with all of the turmoil now. Clears my head
If I awoke to hear these two singing this I'd say "well, now I've arrived in paradise this day"... marvelous...
As a young boy I distinctly remember my father singing the praises of Crystal Gayle’s voice
Now I understand why 🧡
Beautifully understated version of the classic
An amazing performance. Donovan makes it sound like a folk song and Crystal Gayle makes it sound like a country song.
One of the most beautiful songs ever, nice version.
Two of my favorite vocalists singing one of the most beautiful songs.
I've performed this song all over the world - but this is the first time I've seen this version - what a fabulous arrangement!
Totally mind-blowing!
What a lovely escape from our often ugly 2023 world. Thanks Crystal and Donovan
I did not think this song could ever be more beautiful, then I heard this version and there you go. More beautifuller.
Stunning duet - no loud electronics blasting over deep meaningful lyrics.
The most beautiful and touching song
He's a great singer love all his songs
And his got a beautiful voice
I got tears in my eyes lol
What do you admire most about this man?😊
Donovan knows how to speak to our soul. Crystal and Donovan superb together.
The sheer beauty of their voices makes me tear up every time I watch ad listen to this.
The most beautiful and touching song
He's a great singer love all his songs
And his got a beautiful voice
I got tears in my eyes lol
What do you admire most about this man?😊
He has one of the smoothest voices I have ever heard. Awesome.
Watch their eyes & expressions, they are singing this to each other and it is beautiful!
I never knew Donavan had such a great masculine voice (hurdy Girdy man etc). Quite a talent...both of 'em. For someone who grew up during that time this is a real treat...and unexpected
A truly believeable performance. Two understated but talented singers. A nice duet.
Beautiful song about unrequited love. And the angelic voice of Crystal Gayle makes it even better.
You're sitting at home, a little bored, absent-mindedly browsing through youtube. Fluttering from one link to the next, not expecting much. And then this happens. Wow!
rossmcl177 yeah! Blew my mind! A gem of the rarest kind! Archived this puppy!
I back-stabbed my ecstatic reply til I read yours. Donovan is a beautiful voice in a beautiful man, and it made me glad to know he still is both. And now I'll have to suffer the indignity of "google" to see where and what and hope he doesn't have any spare time for such nonsense!
Rite on brother. Mind blowing writing and talent. Non-existent in the Bieber era.
Donovan Leitch! Hugely under rated and sadly his talents still not recognized.
That is rather a strange comment to make about a man who was inaugurated into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 & The Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. Donovan's immense talent is appreciated the world over.
I was always a fan of Donovan. And I always loved Crystal Gayle. Marvelous performance.
They should have done more together. This is a rare and wonderful kinship they've captured here.
Finding these videos help get thru the covid days.
Thank God for ladies like Crystal Gayle. ❤ I LOVE her long beautiful hair. ❤
Awesome. I just now realized how beautiful Crystal Gayle's voice is. So much feeling.
This hippie had the greatest unplugged voice of them all... his harmonica too. Heart full of good ear memories.
@@jacksimpsonguitar253 Not 100 💯 sure but Donovan was never a hippie. Something to do with Jazz and a hipster.
Gee Bud, he was a hippie, master songwriter, singer and musician. I believe he taught the John Lennon to fingerpick while they were learning transcendental meditation. He was always surrounded by young girls at all of his performances.
@@fastm3980 I believe he used to join the beatniks on the prom and beach at St.Ives back around 1962; wacky art music and smoking… the town council there even demolished the harbour wall because it had so many beatniks living playing and sleeping against it constantly!
Yes, "exquisite" is the right description of this piece of art.
One of the most beautiful songs ever and this duet probably the best that sang it.
God, she was so beautiful and talented, she had tears in her voice.
A beautiful, evocative song. I don't think I have ever heard it sung better.
Crystal Gayle is not a WAS??? She is alive and still kicking !!! great music.
What you mean she looks beautiful, sounds beautiful..
Do you actually know her personally 🤔...
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. we a know that right..
yes one of the most beautiful duets ever
Absolutely superb, loved both these artists, to hear them both singing together is Nirvana!
My goodness, this is absolute PERFECTION.😍
Such a wonderful song. So beautiful. Magical it really is. Gives me goose bumps.
Two of the greatest performers of any era. Their music is timeless.
Lovely version, Donovan sings in a lower register here than the record and it is very pleasing, very nice duet.
what a sweetness, my friends, in such a great simplicity! there are few things so beautiful in this absurd world. God bless you all.
@blindwillie99 Blessings are never bad. your arrogance does. Namaste
Flows like a river of creation, very diverse vocals taking me away with the wind and acoustic undertones!
Pure gold HERE Greetings from Dublin Ireland brother and sisters....
The world had it's humanity back then...
What does our Watt and Hay clan say about the Irish?
First, I have the blather and the bluster with the blarney on top.
If you want to hear the best story about the sun and the moon and the love of the human heart, look for a drunken Irishman lying beside the road in the dark.
Bay-an-uck-let. No English translation for you!
Agus oo hane a haritch, you as well my friend.
@@johnwattdotca We were all kinder and Ireland was better when we were all poor.
Can’t believe I had never heard this tender amazing song until recently. Found also a beautiful rendition with duo Joan Baez and Mary Chaplin Carpenter .
A beautiful duet...Touches the deepest places of your heart.
Crystal Gayle really knows how to hold back and harmonize with Donovan. She obviously could have crushed him. instead she stayed at his level and made this performance great. It wasn't about her ego, it was to entertain the audience. BRAVO...
Excellent! I have always loved Donovan's music too.
Good music never dies. Thanks for posting.
Great - Donovan is a great singer-songwriter - and the voice of cyrstal gayle ist wonderful.
Amazing! Such a great song,Crystal has a pure voice
Donavan from Glasgow, Scotland, and Crystal from Paintsville, KY, USA... beautiful.
never heard him sing like this. excellent. I love harmonizing. and of course crystal is a pro.
Wow! Crystal GAle singing this song and adding her harmonies gave it a whole new dimension. To me, the song had more meaning. I could feel the emptiness of the unrequited love.
"The emptiness of the unrequited love..." Yup....that's what it's like....
Just heart-wrenching! I loved him as a teenager when his first song was released. So in love with him. Now, listening to this, in July of 2024, I am STILL in love with him! LOL
It seems that the 60's and 70's became a time-warp for lots of the Great Artists........so lucky to have seen it real time.
Such a beautiful song and such a performance 💕🌹🎸☘️🔑
Wow! I didn't think this song could get any better!!
This is the bloke that gave John Lennon guitar lessons in finger style guitar. One of my all time heroes and crystal ain’t bad either. Superb.
" A great Scot and the sister of a ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter."
PS: Crystal is touring now and will be in S. Carolina this year.
What a wonderful rendition of Donovan’s classic song .
Awh, my heart and soul are exploding with memories, TY!
crystal, when my son was very young he loved to listen to you sing Do You Belive In Magic...yes, yes I do! So does he!!!! Thanks Crystal
One of the most beautiful duets!
Pearls of '68 ! Such a great time with true artists. Crystal Gale is also stunner!
Beautiful duet by two very talented artists. Lovely lyrics & excellent performance. Very enjoyable
Donovan's voice is achingly beautiful here. Both of theirs really.
This is fabulous! it was great in 1965 but this is a whole new trip....whow!
Beautiful song, wonderful lyrics sung perfectly by Donovan and Crystal Gayle two very talented artist's superb.
Absolutely beautiful
On this day in 1965 {February 12th} Donovan performed "Catch The Wind" on the British TV program 'Ready, Steady, Go!'...
And in American four months later on May 15th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #23 and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #4 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart...
Donovan was 18 years old at the time of this appearance on 'Ready, Set, Go!'...
Mr. Leitch will celebrate his 67th birthday this coming May 10th...
What a splendid treat...for the ears AND the eyes!!
Wow "exquisite" is surely an accurate word to describe this...but truly there aren't enough words to say what an amazing person Crystal is :) She has a true gift; she IS a true gift. It seems to me that whenever Crystal sang her lines in the song, you could see the love in her eyes and in her voice; that she truly meant them all with her heart
Ahhh, love you Crystal, doesn't she just melt your heart? !! Not sure what to call it: She has a unique vocal expression that just moves something in my heart. Most Crystal fans know what I'm talking about - you can hear it at 0:58, her little burst of breath... again at 2:15 & 2:21
I'm sure Donovan can't believe his good fortune! It's a pairing I wouldn't expect, but they do quite nicely together. Thank you, Gussie!
Crystal really illuminates the song with her beautiful, crystal clear vocals.
Damn this is beautiful
I'm 73 years-old and been around the block quite a few times. Take it from me, it doesn't get much better than this.
Amazing. Who's still viewing send a thumbs up 👍
😂
agree 100%
