Always good to hear how other people approach parking in a van this size. We do the same with regards to regular parking lots - find a spot far away where we can pull forward & take up 2 spots. Our KL isn’t lifted, other than the little gain we got from the sumo springs we added, but even with those, we can’t entirely clear many of those concrete curbs/stops - there’s a part that hangs down just far enough to scrape a little. Can complicate things a bit.

Nice advice as always, Scott. Gotta say, as someone who has lived in several East Coast major urban conglomerates, in most of these Class B van videos I've never seen so many easily accessible parking places in my life. In my world, it's more like spend 30 minutes circling several blocks in my Volvo until I can find some space with 6 inch clearance, then sweating to a chorus of honks and obscenities as I pray to the parking gods that after I wedge in and check the surrounding signage, it will be legal.

Thanks for mentioning height considerations. I tend to forget about that. One other bonus - When you park away from your destination you get a little extra exercise in. This really helps when you've been driving for a while. As for me...I take up two spaces and do chicken parking. When you talked about parellel parking, I thought no way for this girl. Enjoy that nice weather. I appreciate all your tips.-

Tip @2 I do when parking my Toyota Corolla car. I will just transfer this practice to my RV life. On tip number 1 with the diaganol spots do you have to worry about how much clearance you have under the rig since part of the rig goes over the parking spot curb thing? Thank you for the ongoing helpful tips. Wisconsin is a balmy 30 today - but that means the snow is back. Dreaming of the chance to use these tips soon.

If the 1 foot island wasn't there, and there was just a line separating the spaces, would you try to fit in one space or straddle two, side by side, and 2 spaces front and back?

What is your total length with the bikes and everything? I know the Promaster is just under 21', but it must be longer with the bikes. We are now looking at Embassy Duo built on a 22'2" Transit, so parking may be a little tricky at times!
Also... can you park in backwards, and would that save any space or is it about the same?
Always great info! Be seeing you!

    • @gosmall.livelarge
      @gosmall.livelarge  Před 3 lety

Hi RoL. Bike rack adds about 18" to vehicle length. In that video I pulled in instead of back in to keep the cab out of the sunlight and because the slant in the road was very noticeable which would have made walking in the van uncomfortable. Backing in can save space with the overhang... but watch our for obstructions!

I like to do reconnaissance parking by using Google satellite maps. I have a 24 ft Midwest Automotive Designs Weekender MD4. I prefer only using one parking space especially at rest stops because to many times I go into an empty rest stop and wake to a fully jammed packed one. I like backing in since most of my lenght is overhang on the rear. I just watch for low hanging tree branches, bushes and extra tall parking blocks.
I look for those end spots on parallel parking as well. I've been able to find those in town right in front of the store.
If I have to use 2 parkings I like to have my sliding door facing the island. I use to have a Leasure Travel Unity B-plus with a slide-out the I would look for the island on the side of the slide-out. Also because it's a b-plus they are wide enough that I would take up the full width of the parking and I would pray the person in the neighboring parking spot would not park up against my door.
Many times because of the island the parking spot woul be just a bit wider.
Love the idea of keeping the cap out of the sun whenever possible. I like using the front windshield reflector shade on the front windshield only. More stealthy that way. Some places have hieght and weight limits.
From San Jose, California where we've been having chilling mid 60's all week.

I'm in southern California. It's 75 degrees with sunny skies today. I'm paranoid about taking up more than one parking space even if there are a lot of empty spaces available. I think that just invites getting my vehicle keyed, especially since I have California license plates. People in other parts of the country hate us Californians. Fortunately, I have a Jeep so I don't need more room.

Taking two spots ain't no big deal, especially when parking lots are empty. All for it. Looking for a shade tree is definitely a Texas thing too. I learned something also with splitting the parking curbs on the diagonal. Thanks. I am considering a Stow-Away box on the trailer hitch, which would stick out more. Also would you consider backing in? I know we have done that before, but with extreme caution due to under carriage clearance. Good thing you aren't in Texas - It has been a mess here. Thanks, as always for the content.

Very helpful information. One question: Have you ever gotten a ticket for parking "outside the allotted space"? My only concern is police officers that see giving tickets as helping their local government have the money it needs. Also... In my early research, keeping the van length under 25 feet is my goal. Need to see the Travato's floor plan to see all it gives a person in just 21 feet.

Hi Walter. that question came up on tonight’s What’s Up Wednesday?! #vanlife RV show. For that segment of the video I neglected to mention that the parking space had a significant decline. Had I oriented the rig the other way by backing in, it would have been uncomfortable to move about the van. Other reason I pulled in VS back in was to keep the sunlight out of the cab. Thx for commenting !

Colorado, I wouldn’t take two places since it could be considered very rude...

appreciate your point.. that is why one would park very far from the door where no one is parking

In your first tip could you pull that far forward if you didn't have a lift? You would have needed all these tips if you took the Beyond !

Usually can clear a parking stuff before the lift. But definitely afterwards. Just need to look carefully

The only problem is you might trip on the block coming out of your slide door at night.

I suck at parking. I am hoping someday they will make a van that will park itself.

The total length within 6 meters of camper van , then you don’t have parking problems !

Watching from Austin, Texas on 2.20.21...we just survived 5 days with no water, but we had power...which millions of people in Texas didn’t have. The lowest temp at our house was 6 degrees and it didn’t get above freezing until yesterday (the 19th)-at which time we got water. All 254 counties in Texas were under a severe winter weather warning. In the next few days, we will be back to the 60’s or 70’s for daytime highs. I enjoy all your videos and Luke the cat.

If you had a class B, you could have stayed it it with water, electricity, & heat! I think of that because I’m in Miami, Fl. or hurricane alley. They occur when it’s HOT. So having AC is needed. To cool my entire house is too much on a generator. So, I’d set my pop up in driveway and plug into the generator for a good night’s sleep. Presently looking into Class B. Anyone want my popup?!!!

Those were some interesting tips. However, you point out a marketing lie: it is impossible to park a Travato in a normal parking space. The standard parking space "tends" to be 10 feet wide and 20 feet long. The Travato is over 21 feet ,long and, with a bike and bike rack ,will exceed 22 feet.
So, the problem is how to park a non-standard vehicle in a standard parking spot. Your first method could be improved by backjng into the parking spot. Have you tried backing in with your bike rack and then checking to see if you over hang into the road in front?
I also do NOT like this method since you are parking on the grass, and, if the grass is wet, the tire will rip up the grass.
I have no problem parking into a standard parking spot with my Promaster 2500, even with a bike rack, since my van is less than 18 feet long.
But, I can see why you chose the longer wheel base Travato.
I do like your channel. How about doing an episode on the current condition (pricing) of the new and used van markets? I know that Class C RVs are not selling and prices have dropped substantially.

#1 - I would not park on the grass like that and #3 I do all the time.

keep Sunlight out of the cab. Steep slant to the car park space would making walking inside van uncomfortable thx for asking
