I wish John Henry was still alive because i kinda want to meet him plus he should have survived after he beat the steam drill through the mountain especially since he is a big strong guy

He did survive and live a full life after this. The folk story version has him die for dramatic effect like him surviving isn't even more inspiring somehow lol

Why on Earth can't I find this ANYWHERE? Thank goodness I still have my Disney Animated Shorts on bluray. I can't even find this on DisneyPlus! Nor can I find a soundtrack version of this song! It's catchy and I like the story. Why is it so hard to find? I don't see anything racist about this cartoon, it's well drawn, with a good song and story attached to it!
Sorry for the rant. I just wish I could listen to this in high definition without always having to put the bluray on just to listen to this song.
Thanks for uploading this, but I have to turn the volume all the way up to hear it, sorry!

Don't apologize lol I manually boosted the volume as high as I could get it when cutting it together but it's nowhere near as loud as I wanted it. It's a true story if you didn't know. I read that he actually lived a long happy life after winning, and another account has him dying of silicosis from inhaling massive quantities of silica particles thrown up by the locomotive. I hope the former is true. Always adored this song and story as a child. Still an inspiration to this day and always should be.

Former slave, he and his wife went to find work after the Emancipation Proclamation, fell in with railroad track laying. Had legendary strength: was said to be able to do the work of ten men: he drove metal stakes with a huge hammer.
The railroad company had promised the workers a significant acreage of land if they could get their work done by an impossible deadline, but when John made that feasible, the company invested in a steam drill to make the workers obsolete and stiff them out of their prize.
John challenged the steam drill to a stake-driving contest and won, but he overtaxed his body in doing so and died of exhaustion. Even still, he had won the land for his coworkers and family.
