After installing my roof rack many months ago I had really been contemplating what was missing and what would best help me while on the road. I considered several different options but finally settled on the Cabela's TrailGear Roof Cargo Carrier. Today we will be going to pick it up and talking about why this was my final decision and also installing it. Come along for this van life adventure.

Good start...read the instructions completely before starting. That's what we women do! (and that's what I tried to teach my students). I loved that the manufacturer put that statement in their warranty!
I always do a once over of the instructions before starting sometimes however that can make it just a bit more complicated especially when they have over explain things. I have an example of that here on the channel when they had 12 instructions for some thing that should’ve required for. As a result of reading the instructions we were left confused and bum Fuzzled… lol

I find it is always a chore when I have to move things around but ultimately it does lead to a better feel of the space

Remember to save room for the ladder your goin to need to get in and out of it. They’re great. Hold a lot. I use an aluminum three-step from Home Depot. To get in and out and I keep it in the rooftop carrier just on top. 👍
I got one of those roof racks from Scheels for honda crv I owned. They installed for free. Fyi.
May I ask how much were the racks? I have a Honda CRV 2015. We don't have a Scheels here. Would just an auto store have them? Thank you.
I got the jegs, same as that one, get one of those metal steps that hook on inside the door of a car/van so you can get up to reach in the box…Amazon has them. I did mine alone too, not hard but time consuming getting it all adjusted, you might want to save the box to have a place to store it if you take it off at some point.
I have that LifeStraw water bottle you passed on at Bass Pro and it's....WONDERFUL! Got it on a daily deal from Amazon a few weeks ago. It make plain ole water taste great. I'm drinking so much more water daily since I got it. Haven't tried it from a questionable source, but I trust it.
U should silicone the other holes .and wish I could had helped you ,BUT NoW I Know how to do it LOL Rino has a good product that is good also.

Walmart has cheap kayaks I thought about it too but I am 350 lbs 😂. Congratulations on the car box, hope you glue a flexible solar panel on it to charge your power banks. Visit Alaska in June or July but it is hot not as hot as Texas but 80's and lots of bugs. I suggest going up to Manley hot springs, then Down Parks Highway see Denali than down to Talkeetna, then bypass Anchorage, Seward, then Nikiski, Homer, than Valdez, then go up Richardson Highway back to Canada. Of course visit me in Anchorage 😂

Yep already on my wish list. I too figured to put things I really don’t need in the van. I love Whataburger! We had them in Tucson and when I visit I always stop by. I'm not what you would call an outdoor person but love looking around a Pro Bass store.
On good note that will help keep roof cooler. I have rhino rack with 2 gun cases for storage and 1 100 watt solar panel. I noticed allot cooler in side than usual. I got the gun boxes cheap and three clearance let's me park in garage still

I have the same one! I am only 5"4 and with my van I had to add a ladder to the top to be able to get into it on the road.
Yeah, it was a bigger job than I thought it would be, for one person as well. But it is super helpful. Just watch the weight limit.
That's a good sized roof box for your van it looks like you could probably put your awning on it's wide enough space between it and I seen that the mounting bolts on the awning move I think it'd be tight enough that you wouldn't have to worry about it coming off or getting loose. You still got two mounting places on the awning onto the roof rack.
Stand up paddle boards are awesome. I purchased a low end inflatable SUB
And it has been great and was really not that expensive considering what I have spent over the years on other water sports. Thank you for taking us along on your journey. Safe travels.
I have problems with my shoulders, so kayaking is not fun. A stand up board may be just the thing!

I live in florida.. but my kids are in houston.. I drive there 1 or 2x's a yr... AS SOON AS I get into TX 1st thing I do is go to whataburger... there's one in Louisiana off i10 also.. but I try to wait till tx.. just cause.. lol

I have a fantastic fan on my Connect roof, so to get a roof box, I would have to position it further forward. And yes, being an old gal like I am, I will get t installed! I sure admire your tanacity though!

Nice addition. I've been considering a roof top box for my minivan. But I also have a trailer hitch and think it might be easier for a cargo hitch. Still considering which would be more secure, not that I have anything of value if it got stolen. I just want more space and organization in the van
I personally didn’t wanna put anything on the back because my doors butterfly open. Although I know that they have some hitches that can work without those tend to be a little bit harder to install so I decided against it and instead to go with the roof box. It has been such a treat having this on top of being able to carry my things

Why u didn't get a pop-up roof camper tent? You can sleep in it and put the extra things in it.
I do not want a pop-up rooftop camper. For the first three years of travel I had to pack away a tent to every single night and after doing so I learned quickly that that much exposure to the elements can become problematic. I wanted something that was self contained only when it came to my van.
You don't really need an expensive inflatable for water. I used to go out on the canals here in Florida (with the alligators and all) in a cheap inflatable one person boat. Had plastic paddle. Always a good idea that you can swim, if need be, though it never deflated in the water. All the new fangled repair "magic" tape could probably fix any leaks making it useful for quite awhile.

Ooooohhhhhh I have been waffling for a year too for my NV. Gonna watch and see!!! I haven’t been able to pull the trigger on a rack and box because the NV is just a little tippy toppy rocky already and didn’t know if adding up volume was going to make it more so. And can I actually crawl up and get stuff easily or not. Would I even? But I want to go on longer journeys and to do so I either need a roof box or hitch box. Waffle waffle waffle waffle waffle. I love simplicity and minimalism and well a big ole box seems like a big ole closet. Carry on vs checking luggage. But maybe. Can’t tell you how much your channel has helped me make decisions because you have the same vehicle and the same Texan accent 🤣. Oh I miss Whataburger! Misplaced Texan that needs to journey home to see the folks whose house just flooded in that last flash flood and so ya I guess I need a roof closet y’all, darn it 🤷♀️
Looks great! Would a car door step work for you? Not sure of where the box lines up with the door it would need to be installed in. Would take up less space than a ladder.
It’s a bit too tall for that so the latter is right now working out well but at the same time In the future I might install the box a bit closer to the side

The bars I installed a while back I don’t recall how much they were but I will eventually be purchasing one more bar so that I can add the awning back onto the unit

Enjoy the storage space! We got the biggest available Thule for a cross country move, and I’ve held onto it for the 20 years since! It opens from either side, and holds an incredible amount. While I prepare to start van life, I’m storing hard stuff like camp chairs, tent poles etc., in it-the heat in a rooftop box will break down fabrics and soft plastics. I will keep a folding step stool in the van when I travel to make it easier (and safer) to access, as I’m not very acrobatic anymore.
I have the same box. There’s no reason to put the cap on first. And you criss cross the metal bars when needed. Strange instructions. Go with your gut next time😉. Good job🎉
I think that you made the wrong decision with this cargo box, I really don’t know why they make it so difficult for installation and also this store wants to make hard on the returns, now you have it but there’s a few more that the installation is very very simple.
Check the Tak Tik cargo box 18 cu ft and you are going to laugh with the installation. Have a great day and good luck 👍🍀

When I started out on CZcams I tried to have five minute videos and I felt as though it rushed through the continent. Although they might be a little bit long for some for those who are interested they will watch. I have learned that lesson last I want to create short form content unless it is on one of the other platforms.
