Been there with this too. Weeks of hospitals "stays" and I hate it. I always have a "holy crap" bag filled with everything Missy Dog needs as well as tags for reminders and what not. Trying to cover all bases is REALLY hard but us, as handlers, have about 90% of them covered. The staff up here in Butte MT LOVED Missy and all loved taking her out and giving her a good walk. I have so much good things to say about ST James hospital up here in Butte. Thank you for sharing Erica please keep it up!
I have a cardiac condition and spend tons of times monthly in a doctors office. My sd is a 4 lb Chihuahua/ Cardiac alert and never leaves my side...I had a recent hospital stay with him and had no problems with medical staff. The only problem was the door greeter as we entered (go figure) had to get the hospital administrator to explain law to her!!!! Was stressful because she detained me for about an hour..was late getting to the room...but overall most medical staff is competent as to sds..
I heard a story about a woman who asked to buy someone's services dog. When the handler refused the women grabbed the leash trying to steal the dog and yelled for the police. The handler had a panic attack and in that state had a hard time proving it was their services dog. If your services dog is chipped you are still separated from them while that is being worked out. That terrified me enough to make my own ID for my service dog with her picture. Just to show a police officer that she is part of my family. You don't have to have services dog on the ID it can just be a picture with shot record, microchip number, dog name, your name, number and phone number. That way they can't say you stole their dog.
@@carebear5343 yes, truly terrible. A lot of states have created legislation outlawing service dog theft, but it’s still not illegal nationwide! I have heard of multiple times when service dogs were stolen. Always good to have them microchipped!
I also think it is sufficient to have pictures and Vet documents for your dog. An ID can be helpful, but it can also give the wrong impression to uneducated bystanders
@@carebear5343 oh good. So scary! People need to leave other people dogs and stuff alone. I guess I may end up having to microchip my three girls. My senior dog stays home and sleeps but I do take my three girls out and I don’t want them stolen and have a hard time proving they’re mine. How scary. Glad she got her dog back but dang, I really hate when people think it’s ok to steal.
I went to the ER a couple weeks ago due to food poisoning. First time we’ve ever had to go to a hospital. She didn’t like people walking in and out when I was laying down. But she knew I wasn’t ok because she stayed awfully close to me.
Aw I’m sorry to hear you’ve not been feeling well! ❤️ are you doing better? Yeah, the people going in and out of the door can be stressful, that’s why I always recommend training outings separate from treatment visits. It helps if you leave the door cracked a little instead of it completely shutting.
@@EricaDiebold I’m better I’ve had allergies to help completely heal. The food poisoning lasted about a week unfortunately. But the worst was day 1 when I had to go to the ER. I was so dehydrated my color left and I couldn’t get comfortable till they gave me fluids and I emptied the bag like it was my favorite candy.
Innoway, I wish it was legal to carry paperwork just so it would be easier to verify our dogs, I do carry the original certification and never thought about the medical records, that’s phenomenal. I think it would keep people in line if we had actual paperwork that was documented and stamped with a seal
When I asked for my Service Dog the hospital said I would have to fill out paperwork and I would have to have someone with me to take care of his needs. I can certainly understand the last part, but have you ever been required to do paperwork for your dog when admitted and I'm wondering what they ask?
@@EricaDiebold I didn't have anyone to stay with me to take care of him so I never saw the paper work. I always have his last visit to the vet receipt clipped to the sun visor in case anyone asks, it has when his next shots are due.
I was with my mom in the hospital and one of her nurses was scared of dogs and I went out of the room and the other nurses loved Ruby and loved on the nurses and they loved her. I let people pet Ruby as long as they ask. And patients ask if they can see her I say yes and if a nurse is there I ask the nurse if it's ok. I'm an acception of being an SD handler. I usually say I have a SD before appointments just to let them know.
I had a recent hospital stay and was alone at the hospital. My service dog was home. I was missing him so bad, and the nursing staff said he could come. However, how do you care for him while you are a patient??
If you are inpatient, it helps to have a human there to help you with your dog. They still need to be pottied and fed. The nurses aren’t responsible for your dog, so you want to make sure there is someone who can take care of them. If you are able to bring your dog outside yourself, that might be an option
You're nice and friendly! However, if a Dr wont see me with my dog because of fear or allergies, I'll seek out a new Dr. That's just my prerogative. I've learned the hard way that if my dog isn't welcome, it's generally not a safe situation for me to put myself in, regardless of the situation. I battle PTSD/Panic Disorder. I'm at the mercy of my Panic Attacks, which may come at any time for any or no reason. Without my dog, I'm helpless and at the mercy of the attack. So if my dog isn't welcome, I won't show up!

I’m gonna probably get test for a PFO and ASD. A little worried but hopefully it’s an answer. I’ve only had one problem with one doctor with willow. And that was due to allergies and they didn’t want to accommodate. We will see about this new neurologist. Im always the one that gives it to willow. I don’t let other people feed her even at petsmart. I am sorry for the long message just writing as the video went on. I was wondering how did you prepare Zion for downstays while you are being Examined. I think that is my hardest thing. Willow doesn’t do anything. She’s not territorial or aggressive just curious. The last time I brought her she did break her down stay twice. So it does make me nervous about bringing her. She has gotten a lot better but I don’t know how to prepare her better for a doctors appointment
I hope your test goes well! ❤️ I hope the new doctor does better! Not every doctor will fit, sadly. With Downstays, that’s something we have to spend a lot of time training. I like to do trial runs to proof behavior before I expect him to do something in public. But I would recommend having a human there with you who can help with your sd. That way if you dog does get up, they can redirect. It’s really hard to correct a dog when you are being examined, that’s why the hospital is such a hard place to bring your dog. But continuous and consistent training will get you where you are wanting to go. Just have patience and a plan
Depends on the situation. Usually you have a family member there who can bring them out. Sometimes the nurses offer to. I usually don’t bring my dog overnight and opt for my family to bring him during the daytime so they can watch him for me. I would never make the nurse do it if they didn’t want to tho, but a lot of times they enjoy the break from the stressful hospital
@@EricaDiebold thanks for the response. I could see how that would work. I haven't had to spend a overnight stay but I think I would prefer having my dog with me I would like that. He comes absolutely everywhere with me.
How did you come up with his name? What was the inspiration for his name? I love his name. I see he has a new puzzle on the shelf. Has he figured it out yet?
@@EricaDiebold that’s cool. Since my girls already have the two figured out, I need to get a new puzzle for them, I just haven’t yet. And they're within their rights to ask for it because they operate under the Air Carrier Access Act, not the ADA.
