  • How Luka Doncic became an NBA Legend by the age of 22

you forgot his biggest achievement . Winning European Championship ( national teams) with a country that no-one thought had 1% of chance of winning (at age 18...he already got legendary status in his country for doing impossible). And currently he is leading Slovenia to its first basketball medal on olympics.

I live in Madrid and after watching this video wanna pinpoint a couple of things. In Real Madrid Luka's minutes where fully limited in the early years with pro team, staff knew about his potential but they knew Luke needed to full develope his body and game with pros and specially try to humble Luka. He was 16 and nobody want him to make wrong choices. He was learning under the wings of some of the best spanish players ever including former NBA players as Rudy Fernández (Portland, Denver) and Sergio Rodríguez (Portland, Sacramento). Only when he was almost 18 and the team was plagued with injuries, the coaches gave him the wheel and let him play with no time restrictions and command the team, rest is history.

As a European fan I feel like I should add some things:
Luka is not the most successful or most decorated Euroleague player, but that's normal, considering he had a relatively short EL career.
Most of Europe knew he was special. Not a lot of teenagers make the roster of the teams like Real Madrid.
I have no idea how NBA analysts sceptical of Luka overlooked the fact, that pretty most of the top European prospects drafted into the NBA were considered raw prospects in the Euroleague - Dirk, Parker, Giannis, Jokic, Bargnani - did not achieve anything in Europe, didn't play for the big clubs. There are exceptions, of course, like Pau Gasol. Now compare that to Luka's resume: MVP, final 4 MVP, champion, EuroBasket champion. Kid won everything in a couple of seasons. And yet, some ""analysts"" still doubted him.

If he's life were not cut short on a terrible car Crash in 1993 , He was destined for Greatness ( in Europe he did win everything at Team Level and also National Team by Yusgoslavia) in the NBA.
It was 35 years ago, only played 4 Seasons and his name but is name is on the Hall of Fame,on the 50 Best players in NBA History and was/is one of the Most Elite Shooters the game has ever seen.

So yeah, it was really unfair at the time.

This dude signed like a 205m 5 year extension with the Mavs. In my opinion, Luka will probably improve and improve provided he stays healthy or AT LEAST maintainst his incredible performances but he's unlikely to get anywhere close to the championship because the Mavs back office hasnt done anything to show theyre serious about building a fortress around Doncic to actually compete with the big dogs. Craziest part is, when this guys 5 year contract ends, he'll just be entering his athletic prime and would be able to move to any squad in the league because his performances warrant that respect. In 5 years some incredible players will have retired and entered the last years of their careers so theyll be looking for that last push for a chip which will provide incredible players for Doncic to lead to the final. Be that with the Mavs or elsewhere
