- First Intel NUC from 2013 - still works perfectly today nearly 10 years later!
Intel Desktop/HTPC
In April of 2013, Carey builds and reviews the new Intel Next Unit of Computing (NUC). At just 4 inches by 4 inches and just 2 inches tall, its the smallest desktop with the power of a laptop that you can buy today.

Sweet, been waiting for the full video. Thanks a lot,
Carey!
Thanks Carey - very useful insight into NUC.
Love the power cable rant, so funny but very true :0)
I don't normally make comments on youtube vids but this was an excellent extremely informative video. I have the chromebook and after watching this video I'm ready to get a chromebox as well. Good job PCDIY!
I love every single video you make and I watch all of them in entirety. And I recently have been listening to the Tech Vets Podcast. You and Mike Smith do a wonderful job expressing personal experiences and knowledge from others to give the listener that full effect feeling that if hey, you want to start your own small computer repair business they can feeling confident with just a little bit of luck. Thanks Carey and keep up the hard work.
That's really compact. Really useful and detailed video. You made it a much easier by placing all the useful links in the video description. Thanks :)
Hey Carey, thank you. Your videos are fun to listen to while gaming. :)
This was very helpful, cheers.
This is the first and best NUC build I have seen, Thanks Carey!
I love that kind of videos! You seems rich and you build so many computers! I love watching this and also, I just subscribed to you!
10:06 - the way Carey flips the cable like a boss: proof right there he's a badass!
Excellent video well done to you :)
Nice review ! I'm sold ! Power cable be damned , I'm buyin' a N.U.C. !
I just ran the numbers because of a similar comment on Maximum PC's website. The only spec that the Mini has over the NUC is the processor. Granted, all things being equal, I will always choose processor speed over the novelty of a small form factor for my primary PC. In this video, Carey used 16GB of RAM. To upgrade the Mini with that much from Apple's site, it's $899. Even if you did it yourself, you have to add about $130. The Mini also has a 5400 RPM HDD. The SDD will make a big difference.
Thanks!
Sir, I enjoy your videos. Very detailed. I've bought a lot of computer products/parts based off of your videos
Yeah, now it's complete and working fine. I did have a problem with cpu fan (hyper evo 212) spinning too slow but I managed to adjust the rotation speed in bios.
Sweet unit. They probably didn't include a power cord because it did not fit into the pretty box. But think of the hours of enjoyment you'll have listening to that delightful Intel tune; throw away the computer and keep the box. Great video. Thanks for sharing it.
Hi Carey. I am new to this. I really gained alot of knowledge from watching your videos. I want to build my own computer and you have made it so much easier. I am an expat living in Taiwan where most of the components are made like Asus, gigabyte, coolermaster, Thermaltake, GSkill. There are computer hareware and software stores everwhere here. So getting the best value for my buck will be easy because there are alot of competition here. Keep up the good work and thank you very much.
The difference is that this isn't a mass consumer product that will have its own regional variant. Its a niche product hence having less SKUs is much more practical on a business level because you don't have to create region specific packages, just have it know they need the cable (unless they want to up the price and include 4 different power cables like my Corsair SP2500s). Being that its a barebones system needing ram/wifi/storage, I don't think requiring a cable is that big a deal.
Man that logo sound play was hilarious!
Good video - very thorough - now I want one of these to play with. You know, you'd do great at a community college PC hardware/OS teacher - you'd be good at it.
That is what I taught at Glendale Community College for a few years.
CareyHolzman Ah okay - you definitely sound like you've done it before. I got my A+ in 2010 but my eyesight is so poor that there's not much point in working on tech for me anymore. Now I review instant noodles from around the world - odd career change but it's worked. Anyways, good vid - I agree about that cable; very stupid.
I posted this video to Maximumpc's site today, since they were going over this same product. I love & sympathize with your frustration with Intel's priorities of novelty over function. I need to make your declaration of "That's stupid" into a ringtone. I built my first computer 8 months ago, & since then, have built many others for clients, and have repaired numerous others with the knowledge you share here, and on Tech-Vets. Thank you. The article is titled How to Build a NUC.
It’s amazing the advancements that have been made with NUCs and SBCs in the last 10 years. Now NUCs are usually around 11th gen i9, 64Gb RAM, 1TB NVMe at that tiny size, even my RPi is 8Gb Ram, 260 Gb M.2 Sata with a quad core processor running at 2000MHz. It doesn’t compare to any of my laptops or my iMac but it functions as a basic daily driver in my bedroom tv. I’m not into gaming but I admit gaming PCs are very pretty, however it’s these tiny computers that fascinate me.
Hi Carey, thank-you for this video! I followed it right through and built a NUC system for my wife to replace her old computer. God Bless :)
Carey Just thought you would like to know that the NUC systems do include power cables on the 2nd generation of those machines. Built 6 back in August for My Company to be used as shipping workstations
Great video = just discovered your channel, and look forward to putting something like this together for Lubuntu (assuming this supports Linux)
Love the nuc so small and compact
and eats almost no power
yeah
By far one of your funniest videos.
To the tune of "no cable inside"
Not sure if anyone's mentioned this already, but instead of restarting your driver search every time, you can middle-click each driver link to open it in a new tab; that way, you only do your search once.
your dog always comes out as a special appearance lol. good video though thanks
Thanks for inspiring me and for giving me enough confidence to buy some parts and to assemble a PC all by myself. Technically I haven't assembled my PC yet, because I just got my PC components today. Well, gotta go coz I've got a PC to build :D
Sir u just got a new subscr
thx for this vid
You are doing the Texas two-step with the Intel drivers website! :) back back. click save, back back.
i didnt view this entire video since id already seen both previews from before, so im not sure if it was edited out but preview #1 ends with a well deserved intel rant.
Great video Carey. I love the dog skin.
The Raspberry Pi has some obvious advantages for a lot of hobby projects. It draws very little power (no heat problem) and costs the same as the memory you have to buy alone for the NUC (the RPi has embedded memory on the board and is basically ready out of the box with a little SDcard). If you plan to use Windows on your NUC, well that isnt free either. So these are two different platforms completely with different uses.
Thanks
the power cord isn't included in the the package because of the different wall power connectors around the world. for example: usa is different from uk/france/netherlands et cetera
Hi, Carey, That is neet, thank you.
looks easier than I thought.
I was thinking about this until I saw the Gigabyte Brix Pro with an i7 4770R. Can't wait for my travel pc.
2nd gen NUC comes with core i5 haswell processor, USB 3.0 and display port aswell.
Although Intel's NUC is an interesting device, it's still as expensive as building a nice regular desktop computer once we add the cost of the memory, WiFi, and SSD. For now I'll stick with the regular computer which gives me the space to grow and upgrade! In any case, thank you Carey for exposing us to what could possibly be the "future" of computer building.
Not off the top of my head but its essentially the same as buying a product from another region and having to replace the power cable with a local version, its not a big deal and they do state the requirement right on the box.
I thought that Intel theme was kinda neat. lol
its par 4 the course good vid
I have the new 10th Gen Intel NUC i3 model and I love it as a backup PC should my main PC fail. What I love about it is they have a small footprint so they don’t take up desk space. My model has a built in WiFi card which was a neat feature.
Spoiler alert - Mines came with a power cord after looking up the model information.
As a follow up. Intel just released their 1th Gen NUC and I am upgrading to it.
Having rolled out many hundreds of PC's in the UK, and having dumped just as many US power cables - (because we had both UK and US power cables), this move, to not include the cable makes good sense both economically and environmentally, I agree a coupon could / should have been included, but I think you have a some what blinkered view about this. - still nice video, you get a thumbs up.
It's currently dec 07 building a nuc core I5 as a Christmas present just opened the box the plug is completely different at first I thought it still didn't come with a power cord but turns out what I thought was the power brick is actually the plug without prongs which come in a separate bag. This was one of those moments when the lame instructions were actually useful
The reason it doesn't include a power cable is so they can sell it worldwide!
Computer was probably $100, the mounting bracket, another $25, and the remaining $175 probably went into the R&D needed to make that box play the Intel jingle. Apparently at the time they were too afraid they'd lose money on the product if they went $.50 over-budget to include the power cable.
I am truly amazed that somebody still, after Hearing Mr. Holzman's simple and valid arguments, saw a reason to try and explain "why" Intel doesn't include the power cord.
Debate much??!
Is the Intel trademark sound a prank Carey played on us when he unboxed it?
Can you name any other computer/bare bones kit that includes a power supply, but does NOT include a power cable?
Are there any good AMD 'NUC's? I guess their APUs should be perfect for such a form factor. I'm concidering getting one for a litte Linux-based System. Not sure though if i really get one.
+Astravall I don't think they have one at this time. The closest thing to a NUC they have is Project Quantum...
They may bring one out soon, but I don't know.
the 3ds xl also dose not come with a power supply in some parts of the world
My favorite part was when he said the box noise was stupid the first time haha
I think the tune that plays is cute.. but that's just my opinion.
I'm going to buy one of these and fit it inside of a GameCube case.
CareyHolzman :i dont blame you being pissed off i can relate, its happend too me,by bthye way good vid
Well, it ain't gonna build itself! Get to work! :)
Keep up the great job your doing, but new video's for 2015 would be nice.
Gigabyte has something just like this called the Gigabyte Brix. It has built in Wifi, processors from Celeron to Core I7, and can you believe a power cord. But unfortunately it does not come with the music box.
you can just new tab all the links and u can get it done much faster instead of having to go back and reclick it again and again i like to use the click wheel to create a new tab from a link
i completley agree even apple mac comes with a power cable no matter the country your in. i believe the ios devises come with cable too
nice NUC...
Wow they sell you a device that needs electricity but don't include a power cable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would make a perfect webserver or FTP
Actualy for most people from out of US, the power cable that you want is useless. So, for us, if comes or not with the north american power plug, it just don't make a diference.
"Although the laptop will come with a power cable" XD I laughed so hard.
Hahahahaha! I like the way you are being sarcastic about Intel!
the D54250WYK i got comes with the american 3 pin cable. better than nothing.
You would think that Intel would have the sense to bundle all the drivers into one big installer instead of having to do multiple downloads.
Just one installer would make troubleshooting driver probrlems a (bigger) nightmare.
All laptops here (in Slovakia) use a mickey-mouse power cable.
As much as it's useless I wouldn't mind having that sound, but rather than being in the box it should be the computer's startup sound :)
cary holzman
Its little stupid not to have a cord, esp because they sell most of these units in the USA. but does Intel also sell these units worldwide? may explain not to have a power cord. I believe only Canada, Mexico and Japan use our plug configuration and type of electrical power. Other countries have different plug configurations and/or electrical power.
I find it ridiculous that they send it in that massive box and add the sound + mounting bracket yet no power cable. The box has enough room to fit the power cable and the sound probably costs more :P
I totally agree about the power cord.
I have watched many of your videos, but I have yet to see you build a simple home computer for us old people, not into gaming. If nothing more, put a list of parts needed to build a simple PC like you did with the $20,000 gaming PC. ha ha Seriously though, I can build a PC, I have been working on computers for 40 years, but I need to know what goes with what like processor to what board etc. If you have made one and I have not found it so far, please let me know the name of it.ThanksRay Sanders
Most companies just send the adapter with the cable.
the new nuc's are coming with the power cord lol , watched a tech of tomorrow ces 2104 vid on the new core i5,i3 and celeron nuc
I guess they wanted to see how many customers they could alienate first...
+robert maynard De latest nuc;s use an AC adapter with extra connectors for UK/EURO/US. Not the powerbrick with a powercord.
gotta love the coke in the background in every one of your videos
where is the i3 i cant see it
if it would come with a power cord that you cant plug in cause its not from region, its simple, go and buy an adaptor, its like 10$.
not bad
Same thing happened to me when my power supply didn't came a power cable. Wtf! I had to use my old Xbox power cable to use it for my new computer.
I don't have a mickey mouse clover leaf power cable...
I see that intel stuck you with a faulty NUC that's missing the internal USB header pins. I had to RMA two of these for that shoddy workmanship.
"Intel inside" 7:21 that was stupid they did not include a power cable with that darn sound
sometimes i wonder if intel designs apple computers and they put a fancy aluminum case on it and stamp an apple logo and say they made it.
Wish they have USB 3.0 :(
Gotta love the PG-13 rage about the power cable.
nintendo did the same with the 3ds xl
when did he rage?
OMG MAJOR BREAKDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL But yeah screw intel for not including a damn power cable WTH!!!!??? Its like if u buy a brand new tv and no power cable??? BTW I laughed when u got angry lol :) Keep up the good work :)
Haha I laughed so hard when you opened it
I actually have like 4 of those "mickey mouse" power cables laying around my house.
Sorry , i feel better now xD
