I am from Madeira, born in 1991 and it is wonderful to see a video like this, to get to know my beautiful island many years before I was born. A lot of things have changed but also a lot of things, buildings and traditions remain the same. Noticing that many thing are still the same after many years makes me feel proud of living in Madeira. Even though after 21 years living there, I had to come to the United Kingdom to find a job as a nurse. I miss my beautiful Madeira!

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful video of my birth island I was 14 years of age at the time the video was taken I am now 60 years old and have been living in South Africa since my mom and dav emigrated sadly they have both passed away and I have visited the island 3 times since living In SA I still remember certain parts if the video especially the flowers and the sellers and the bulls etc very good memories love my birthplace thank you

All I can say is - Brilliant, fantastic footage and video. I first visited Madeira in 1972 with my parents (who were originally from there, but have been in the UK since 1959). Lovely to see how the island looked many years ago and even though a lot of it has changed, some of the locations/attractions still look the same.
Well done Mr Rogge - truly awesome video. I love the island and each time the plane takes off from the runway at Funchal, it brings a tear to my eye!! Do you have any old footage of the New Year's Eve fireworks, as although we go to the island every year to see the display, it would be interesting to see what the end of year fireworks looked like many years ago.

I've always imagined that Madeira in the 1960's would look a lot more decadent and poor (it was the poorest region in the poorest country in Europe at that time, fortunately that changed), remarkably, from the images I saw, the streets were clean (apart from the cow dumpings), the buildings seemed to be maintained and there were a lot more cars than I could have imagined.
The traditional Madeiran rural accent hasn't changed a bit, you can hear it at 04:11, the man says: "aquele cavalo ainda vai chegar a minha idade", a loose translation to English, it means something like: "that horse will live up to my [current] age"

There was a Travelogue film made called I Believe Isle of flowers ilha des flores in 1966 or later by a Portuguese company in Lisbon.Can anyone help me find this Film ? could be 1966/67/68 . Most grateful for any help where i might go to an archive of such travelogues. I have already gone through ALL that is available so far on this web site and pages.... thank you.
