Blue Lock: The Power of Hunger

  • In Blue Lock chapter 247, Jinpachi Ego proclaims that one's originality equals their hunger. Hunger is perhaps the most sustained metaphor in the series: egoist strikers hunger for goals and strive to devour each other. This is an analysis of the prominence of hunger and feeding in Blue Lock, and how it relates to its philosophy of egoism.

Finally, someone talks about "hunger" in Blue Lock. It was prominent since the first few chapters when it was explained by Ego.

Glad I could be the first one! I obviously knew there would be plenty to talk about going in, but I really didn't expect this to get as interesting as it did. This actually turned out to be one of the most fun scripts to write!

This statement from Ego immediately took me back to when he denied his players to even touch a ball, I feel like Blue Lock also has one more theme that is most heavily explored in the NEL, Yoichi Isagi's Ego is personification of Opportunity attained by Hunger. I think Blue Lock as a whole is simply this idea explored more deeply

Box checked off haha. I very much got the sense reading Rin from this perspective that there's a lot more to be explored for his character on this, so I'm sure I'll be revisiting this during the PXG match

Another great video ✊🏽 The whole "devour" thing was always so random & "in your face" so I wondered if there could be deeper meaning. Glad, our monk might really be in with the big boys now 😂 I was thinking the other day it's wild how he gets so much hate. Lot of us forget he had to get past BL Man with them 100 goals for a striker position. Now that they are able to genuinely be other positions I feel like he's gonna go wild on defense. He already showed promise taking that beating from the face save and surviving the Demon. Build onto his defense with the ability to draw some good fouls from said Demon to set him off during PXG and BM & we gotta game. Little theory, Kunigami doesn't get to take his revenge just yet because Demon gets thrown out due to fouls. K does make amends with Isagi & the guys though. Kasier is gonna trys his new weapon/goes berserk leading to Noa benching him due to illogical/irrational play (most unlikely part of theory imo). Which lays the field for all out war between our favorite rivals.

Loved the analysis as always! I'm really glad you're giving a voice to these themes since it seems like the larger community is blind to them... The vocal backlash to chapter 247 as a "filler" chapter was incredibly disheartening given that Ego went out of his way to tie the NEL's core foundation of "Originality" back to "Hunger". This chapter was fundamental to the larger themes of the work as a whole. The NEL has been incredibly good at that type of symbolism.
Something that I don't think I've seen anyone point out is the act of "grooming" in relation to one's ego, in the NEL. The most obvious examples would be Barou's new red streaks alongside Kaiser's blue dye. The act of grooming the striker's hair seemingly being an avenue through which the players grow closer, with both Ubers and Ness really embracing Barou and Kaiser afterwards.
This serves as a great parallel to a certain striker who has completely neglected his hair and is also shunned by his team - Kunigami. Ever since his fall during the Wild Card, he doesn't have anyone he can rely on nor anyone that relies on him. It's also a visual depiction of his personal issues blocking any meaningful connections he may have had prior to his experience in the Wild Card.
Those were just some random musings I've had and thought I'd share. Really looking forward to the big project you're working on!

Thanks for all the support! I hadn't read many reactions to 247 myself tbh but people would be missing out on a lot if they think this was filler. This is exactly the kind of stuff that gets me excited, maybe even more than 246 haha
Love the idea about grooming btw, I hadn't really given that any thought but I definitely agree that there is an interesting pattern between those three! Maybe add Chris Prince/Yukimiya modeling as well - Prince in particular is interesting for the way he blends reality and fiction with his 'best self'. I'd love it if that went anywhere further anyways!

@@darryldarko9964 Not sure if I will anytime soon tbh. Even though he's my favourite character, I feel like I've said most of what I've got to say about Barou at the moment in different videos already, so it's not really interesting for me to just copy-paste that into a solo Barou video. In case you haven't seen them yet, I'd highly recommend checking out How Barou surpassed Snuffy, then my Ubers analysis (that's almost 50% on Barou) and perhaps also the Manshine-Ubers parallels video, all still really solid analysis imo!

The thing about ego’s speech relating “hunger” and the notion of “proof of originality” can trace into modern day football in real life. The fact that they play in the standards, but you see through their behaviors when playing in matches..you try to seek the hunger they have of fighting for ball control. You also see which lacks it, for instance Barcelona..they once hungered back in the day..but now, they lack that hunger and strive..they just don’t care much about playing that they barely win anything. You feed them an ideology overused by other teams, it starts to wither down in terms of lack of desire and barely getting by. That being that their teams formation loosens letting teams pass by them, because their obeying tactics from past geniuses that I believed to be the standard.
I think the fact is bluelock is the archetype or the book that challenges the notion of what it means to play football. Cheat code style sports series that shows you how to break through the higher levels of football, Rebelling the modern standards of football and recreating a new environment of which recreates football in a way no one could envision. Comparing to other sports mangas, teamwork is always the key to success but it works 75% of the time, whereas bluelock for instance challenges a team to think outside the norms, having a focus on scoring goals more to that ego’s ideology is reshaping the idea of what it means to be a footballer.

i think the eating with hands is a lil too much of a reach, gagamura is a mountain boy so it seems in character for him and the other person doing it was stealing food which if you wanted to could probably correlate to something

    • @suzelsmanga
      @suzelsmanga  Před 5 měsíci

Fair enough, I really don't mind if people aren't on board with every detail. But just as a thought experiment though: that scene is the first time we get any real focus on Gagamaru. So assuming you don't have any context about the character, it is imo very striking that Blue Lock spends half a page detailing his 'uncivilised' eating habits

Interestingly enough, Barou does refer to Tokimitsu as a "Herbivore"
Idk if this is something that will ever be furthered or built upon in the story, but it's definitely interesting to think about, especially if at some point he becomes a more relevant character, although as of now I have my doubts
