- Luo Wenjun is a musician whose instrument grows on trees. The self-proclaimed best leaf musician in China has been making beautiful music by blowing on leaves since he was a child. Keeping this cherished tradition alive is important to Luo, who teaches lessons to students ages 7 to 70. Wenjun shares his tips for leaf picking and leaf playing with us-give it a try!

My grandpa taught me how to blow on leaves to make a whistling sound when I was little but I never realised that you could actually play songs with them! Also, how curious that we live in Finland on the other side of the world and all the way in China people do it as well - music is universal.

Kathleen Ly My grandpa would tell me that it called the birds. He would play outside in the backyard and I remember seeing flocks of birds in the large bird nest he created for them. I last saw him at the age of 6. As he flew down to Cali to see his own fathers funeral, he soon had a heart attack in which caused him to pass way a day after.

In the Philippines there is a lyricist long gone alao played music by leaf playing old Filipino and Western Romantic songs. This was out of necessity due to his damaged arm during WW2 and cannot play swiftly the violin anymore. His name is Levi Celerio.
