  • On this episode of Florida Roadside Attractions & Abandoned Places takes us to the forgotten towns of Bradley Junction and Brewster, which are located in heart of the Florida Phosphate region. The Mosaic phosphate company owns most of the land surrounding this area and It has heavily influenced the area, Mosaic’s largest facility “New Wales” is located near the area, and we we take a look at that as well. There is much ahead.

If you are interested there is a phosphate museum in Mulberry with animal bones that they have found in the phosphate mines. Some of these bones date back millions of years. They have mammoth bones for one and others. Unique to see what roamed in central Florida way before any of us.

When they opened the Mulberry Phosphate Museum in the mid-Eighties, they bought the collection of the Bone Valley Fossil Museum which was in Bradley Junction and some of the exhibits at the fossil museum came from the old Bone Valley Exposition which operated from 1960 to the early Seventies (just east of Bartow where the Polk Sheriffs Charities Scholarship House is now). Collecting sharks teeth, skate teethand whatever other fossils in the front of the Bone Valley Fossil Museum was a favorite Sunday afternoon activity in the Seventies.

My mother currently lives in Bradley Junction. We're from the little ex mining community just up the road called, Pierce, aka Rolling Hills.
That "giant mountain" is a gypsum stack. It's basically a mountain of waste byproduct of phosphate production.

Love it when you show us these cool videos of things off the beaten path. A long, long time ago (like late '70s) I went on a field trip in middle school to one of the large phosphate plants off of 41 near Apollo Beach. That New wales facility definitely dwarfs any of the processing plants in Hillsborough. Interesting and informative, thanks for posting this!

TJ, I'm no stranger to the phosphate industry. My father worked for a Agrico South Pierce Chemical Works long before Mosaic bought them out when I was 19 years old I worked for an Industrial Supply Company as a delivery driver. I've been to all those phosphate mines and chemical plants fertilizer and all. Some of those facilities are massive New Wales is one of the largest. I'm so glad you took time to share that with everyone.

Jay, I go to Mosaic in New Wales almost weekly. I pick up a product called monocalcium phosphate that is put into poultry feed. From what I’ve been told, since most poultry we consume is in a shed, they don’t walk around much. They just sit and eat. That causes them to have very brittle bones. The BIOFOS 21% (that’s what we call it for short) strengthens their bones.
The plant isn’t spooky at all. However, it has a pungent odor, almost ammonia like. Takes your breath away. They own a lot more then you realize. The current location has enough phosphate for the next 80 years allegedly.

I sometimes feel a little depressed when I see these abandoned towns . I love the efficiency of the interstate. But the unintended consequence was the slow death of many rural towns. In other cases these towns were built around one industry or company. When the company left. The towns just died. When one company owns everything, it hardly ever ends well.

I've visited Bradley Jct/Brewster several times on my motorcycle. Take Lithia-Pinecrest Rd. from SR60 for a more scenic route. Afterwards, continue south on Old Hwy 37 to see another town that time forgot, Fort Green. Be mindful of the feral hogs, though; lots of dead ones on the side of the roads down there, and I suspect hitting one - especially on a motorcycle - would be the very definition of having a bad day.
