This design is the other way, I don't normally build tunnels in this format but after seeing a picture of the network rail station at canary wharf, I thought that it could be a useful design.
I liked the ends that curve out towards the top and a triangulated tunnel will have no problem withstanding any snow load.

Hi Paul: I very much like the idea of the tunnel greenhouse, but if it were truncated at the apex of the highest point rather than a row or two lower at the rear, it could be constructed adjacent and attached to a house and avoid the "debris collector" area between the apex and the point where it would be attached to the house. Plans of these various ideas would be well received.

Nice design! It has a pleasing shape and looks very sturdy. The flat wall has many practical uses. Maybe it could be against a building. Or the flat side could contain a thermal mass, such as the tire wall that Robert Coffin suggested or barrels full of water, etc. I would probably want to build one.
I really like the look of this.. the one straight wall is perfect for where I want to place it.
Looks way better than a poly tunnel.

Why I've not come across your site before last night is difficult to say. I'm glad I have though.
This is potentially more practical for smaller plots than a dome, and I think it's great. I've been thinking of something similar above a sunken garden with a trombe wall at the rear to temper the heat.

Backwall, but make it with holes with netting to the backside, and then you fill up leaf and grass compost high against the wall. Free heating into your greenhouse for the winter! 👍 😊 Nice design. Probably very sturdy too.
Would love to have the plans. I also think it would be really cool to connect a tunnel to a done on one or both ends

It certainly has an appeal. I could see one end wall flush with the top and one recessed: even with the bottom; leaving an awning on one end. It is elegant.

Really like the original design you made. The one with the rear wall seems like it would loose some of its strength for a snow load and doesn't have the same aesthetic appeal. I'm thinking of building one like your original and then putting a wall inside on the north end similar to your second design. From the outside it will look great like your original and will have a place for shelves and added strength for snow.
Great stuff. Let us know where to get plans when you have them. There seems to be just one side of the triangle needing a bevel.

I plan to design a center dome that can have up to six 'tunnels' connected to it. I love this design with the part that extends out. Looks very nice. Goal is to have a center common room and each tunnel its own function, like kitchen, bedroom, office etc. Did you every combine a structure like this with a dome? I first planned to do that with containers (in place of the tunnels) and a dome on top in the middle, but this seems more cost effective and also much nicer to look at.

Yes, but only take the 1st half length wise - that way the water flows only away from the ES. Can it be made taller?

Looks much better than a Polytunnel. At a charity by me they have several polytunnels but youths got on the ground and slashed them. They look even worse with the gashes taped up. Using triangles not only looks better and more sturdy but also means the individual triangles could be recovered if damaged.
Not so keen on the riser wall. Would look better if sunken into the ground slightly. A bit like they do in South America. Just remember to use a dense material for the submerged walls to trap the heat, like stone or brick.
I think something half way between the two designs might look nice. i.e. use the second design but on the wall side bring the roof down one extra row of triangles.
In the version with the high back wall, will there be a lot of sideways force on the top of of the wall? It looks like it would be forced out if the dome sags. If one had a sloping site of the correct orientation, then the tunnel could be built into the slope to take advantage of the thermal mass of the earth. Vertical alcoves behind the wall with access both from the top, and inside the greenhouse, could be filled with compost to provide extra heat. I have watched a lot of your videos over the weekend. Very informative, so thanks for sharing your experience of design and construction.
Hi Paul ... Just found your channel and everything looks great. Plans for this would be great. Must say I like this design better then the other tunnel design.
An idea could be to build the complete tunnel and then put internal wall for your shelving system. Use the space behind that wall for storage. Just an idea

Oh yes, I'd like to see the plans and the video of the build if you construct it. I did a rather plain gambrel roof greenhouse over my cellar and I'd consider remaking the front to this style or an overlap.

How does the structural strength of a tunnel compare to that of a dome ? Does a tunnel have a weakness in any particular direction ? I really like the simplicity of this design .... my understanding is the beautiful structure can be built using a single size triangle, yes ? Except maybe for the end walls 😀 Keep up the Great Work, sir !!!
I love your design and would go with the tall back wall. I live in Canada and snow loads and solar orientation are important. I too like the simplicity and low cost of the ubiquitous poly-tunnel, but don’t like the look, nor the stability. I would consider building using a SIRE wall (rammed earth with an insulating core) for thermal mass and structural strength. And I’d build one with annualized geothermal storage so I can create a Mediterranean climate. Very interested in plans for this.

I very much like this design . With the flat wall and end extentions . I would rather work with equal lateral triangles .

I want one 60' x 20' with the largest side to any of the triangles less than or equal to 2' lengths. One plan with a back wall and riser on the front and one with only a riser wall of triangles about the same exact dimensions as the tunnel itself. It needs doors at each end. Also how do you keep it cool in the summer? Will need screened windows more than likely on the top. Plan to back fill the North Wall is why I want such small triangles. They would be more stronger and the sides that meet the full length of it will need the right angle cut on that board so it arches properly. Only one size triangle is why I want this. I can make it out of Scarp wood. 2" x 4:" no longer than 2' lengths? This is cool.

Paul, I like the design, especially the design with the taller “back” wall. We are looking to add a green house behind my woodworking shop and this could be scaled to fit, oriented east-west with the “back” wall on the north side, facing our bog filter and duck pond. I know you are not a fan of water heat storage, but I could see this back wall with a two foot tall line of water tanks, and then shelving above it. The water might not store a lot of heat, but would add humidity. Also a place to store cuttings/plants from our bog filter over the winter. I would be interested in plans. I presume one outside edge of each triangle would be beveled to shape the arch.
Yes bevel and is 10° there is also a tiny nip to take off the top point, I'll post a link to plans which will show more details.
Paul, I like your design, as does Household Six. I am thinking about front and back walls recessed with a couple of posts to support the front and back extensions. That would provide protected entrances in inclement weather. I imagine the the length is somewhat scalable. John

Great design and would buy a plan much neater than my poly tunnel will you use a high grade poly sheet to cover or individual triangle poly carbon sections
I love your work. Question - what's the structure strength of a stretched dome? I'm assuming it's stronger than a hoop house. I'm in a high wind area often getting 60mph (100kph) winds and need a greenhouse structure strong enough to withstand that, it's just at the limit for a hop house but I got the feeling these are stronger??? also do you have plans for one of these tunnel domes made from metal conduit instead wood? Yes much stronger than a hoop house, I have built both, snow load really damages hoop houses but the triangulated version will take any snow you can throw at it. Yes you could do this with conduit, you would need quite a bit of anti hotspot tape though. Leave it with me I'll see if I can put something together.

Hi this looks great, would love plans as need to replace a plastic glasshouse roof. Will the plans be scalable, as am needing it to be either 3.1m or 6.2m span. Would changing the size(length) of the pieces of the triangles change the span?

With a back insulated wall to the north this looks amazingly like a chinese solar greenhouse (google it). How about covering this with long horisontal strips of double walled polycarbonate, screwed to the frames? And make the triangels just wide enough to allow the polycarbonate sheets to slightly overlap with an overhang where the tunnel bends? And perhaps also change the bevel to change the curve towards the top. Start with a low curvature to gain hight, increase it to create a bend and finally reduce it again to span the width?
What about back filling the back wall with composting material to provide heat in the winter and fresh compost for your garden?
Yep I think you are sot on with that ideas, I did a compost heated bed in the pyramid greenhouse last year which works really well, a double polythene layer would also boost efficiency.
have you made these domes wth double air inflated poly? Does it work well?
I didn't notice the plans for these tunnels in your shop. Was I looking in the wrong place i wonder?
I need a solar dehydrator in the farm. We sun dry our corn, rice and bananas. I’m of the opinion that a poly tunnel would do better.

Equilateral is good ... Only need to make one spar cutting jig and one panel assembly jig ...
So can you connect multiple tunnels together at different angles? What would that look like? Can you connect a tunnel into the middle of this tunnel? What would that look like?

Yeah, I am interested in the plans as well ... looking to make a workshop for my woodworking and a creative space for my wife. I wanted to do a geodome but after looking hard at my land a geodome would be super inefficient.
Yeh geo-domes are great but they sometimes just don't fit, I like to offer different solutions if at all possible. I'll post a link to plans shortly

This would work out great for a sunken greenhouse with earth berm on north side.
If you built this and sank it into the ground the height of the wall. You would have some thermal heating or cooling at not cost. An air filled cover would not hurt. But I like your way of thinking.
Yes I think I can do a double skin without the need to have a fan blowing all the time.
I would like to use this technique to build a wood shop.

I like to build a 25m width x 40m length tunel Dome with all struts length less than 2m . Can you help me design it pls !
I say go 4-6 feet underground and then do a domed tunnel... You then get 3 walls and full day sun usages... Micros dont need much light
I assume it would be a 10 degree bevel on each horizontal edge x 18 edges = 180 degrees and that the length of each of the sides of the equilateral triangle would be in the vicinity of 500mm looking at the rough scale in the clip...
Yes the bevel angle is 10° I have the equilateral sides at 956mm. Total height is about 2.2m and the width is 4m. Length is 10m in the drawing, so you can get an idea of scale. I'm working on drawings now, I'll make a copy available to all commenters.
How much stronger/weaker is this design compared to the other one where the triangles go up and down along the tube...(inverted bavel)?
