For some reason I always thought the X was a representation of the cross and that's why it got abbreviated. Symbolic of the Savior who died for us. The whole reason he was born.
I was always told that the X in Xmas was to symbolize the cross tilted as Jesus carried it up the hill for his crucifixion when he died for our sins which was the reason he was born - so we could all be saved.
