- Rita Coolidge visited The Church Studio to share stories about her life, music, and career! Hosted by Teresa Knox, this live Q&A took place in front of an intimate audience of less than 100 attendees.
Known as “Delta Lady,” a name inspired by Leon Russell’s 1970’s song, Rita Coolidge was the inspiration for numerous other songs, including Leon Russell’s “A Song for You” and Stephen Stills “Cherokee.” Furthermore, she co-wrote the iconic song “Superstar” and the piano coda to “Layla.” As one of the most famous rock and roll backup singers of all time, Rita sang for Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, and Stephen Stills, before finding fame as a solo artist with such hits as “We’re All Alone,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” and “(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher.” Rita Coolidge enjoyed a five-decade career, sold millions of records, and experienced a remarkable eight-year romantic and artistic marriage for the ages, she and former husband Kris Kristofferson earned multiple Grammy Awards.
Rita's “Delta Lady: A Memoir” follows her story from Lafayette, Tennessee to becoming one of the most sought-after rock vocalists in LA in the 1970s. Delta Lady chronicles Rita Coolidge’s fascinating journey throughout the ’60s-’70s pop/rock universe.

Rita is not Cherokee. She has lied about living in a reservation when there is no reservation in Tennessee. Her lies are catching up with her just like Buffy Sainte-Marie’s. For her to say people were ashamed to be Indian as a reason for her ancestors not to be found on the rolls is really racist. The only reason Rita got to sing on the Cherokee Children’s Choir CD is because she went to school with Chad Smith in Memphis. He’s adopted by his grandmother, Rachel Smith, and for some strange reason even Chad’s records are permanently sealed.
Rita and Buffy need to have a DNA test to show where and who they actually come from. Buffy is not Native (She's Italian/English), I don't know if this lady has any Native blood either.
