    This is easily the most beginner friendly breakdown of Roll20 that I've seen so far! Pleeeaaase do the version from a DM's perspective. Both campaigns that I'm in have started using Roll20 while we play remotely, but we just use our D&D Beyond character sheets that are open in another tab. It's already made and it's really simple to just toggle over. But one for the DMs who are new to using Roll20 that's as accessible as this one was would be such a huge help!

    • @ashutoshmohapatra7320
      @ashutoshmohapatra7320 Před 4 lety +4

      You can actually use a chrome extension called "Beyond20" which links your DnD Beyond character sheet to Roll20. You could directly roll on your attacks on DnD Beyond that way.

    • @seanmcgcostumes
      @seanmcgcostumes Před 4 lety +1

      @@ashutoshmohapatra7320 I know for sure some of us won't want to download something when we can just move to the very next tab, hahaha. If we planned on staying a digital campaign, maybe, but I think we'd all rather just move to the next tab to use the layout we're most familiar with for now. But that's cool that that exists!
      Also, all of us use real dice. Rolling digital dice is way less fun and really takes away from the experience for us.

    Love the vid, but I have to say charactermancer can be very helpful, despite its flaws, here's an example:
    youre making a half-orc barbarian, simply go to the charactermancer, pick halforc, then pick barbarian. it'll automatically present you with the race features anf skill profeciency choices of the class (choosing from a drop down box). On the equipment tab if you choose to start with class starting equipment it also gives you the choices.
    If the other tabs are unnecessary after that, simply finish using the charactermancer, and whatever you have input before is already in the sheet.
    -Rage? check
    -Battle axe & javelins? Check
    -Relentless endurance? Check
    -Brutal Critical? Check
    -Halforc profeciency with intimidation? Check
    -any other profeciencies you chose? Check
    each with their description (if applies) and in the correct place, hell even the starting pack of your choice and the equipment within it.
    Sure it isn't amazing without buying more content but it saves you from manually inputting the menial basic stuff.

    If you do own all the content character mancer is really nice. I use it as a DM to keep my infrequent PCs sheets leveled. It's also really nice if you want to whip up a NPC with PC levels, or if you want to experiment with optimization and leveling through different builds. That and the drag and drop MM is really what keeps me on roll20 as a DM. Dynamic lighting is neat too, and adds a lot to dungeon exploration. You can also drag and drag every mundane item, which is really nice for weapons and armor. I think all the magic items outside of XGE are in there too.

  • @danielpatrickspencer

    you can drag stuff from the compendium onto a character sheet. so search for searing ray -> drag -> it'll auto-populate the spell (or the item, proficiency, etc). This is great cause it'll also populate attacks / ac+initiative calculations, which helps for new players.

In our next campaign we pooled in some cash so our dm can unlock races\subclasses\feats and share the content among the party.

    I played with the free version for almost a year without any issues at all. The only reasons I went Pro were because of Dynamic Lighting and API support. I do agree with the Charactermancer thing. I was using the Charactermancer for a while without buying the PHB or other books for Roll20. It was a pain in the ass where more than half the subclasses wouldn't be available.

    Armour class is not actually calculated manually, it's calculated automatically based on your dex if you have no armour, and if you use items from the compendium which give you armour class then it will incorporate that. There are options in the options tab for changing how all of this works so that you can have automatic tracking of Unarmored Defense or similar things.

    If anyone is shopping for different virtual tabletops, Roll20 is, I think, pretty easily the best free option and probably the best option if you are using modules. That said, if you're running a homebrew campaign of any kind and don't mind throwing down a one-time $50, Foundry is vastly better and I absolutely recommend it.
