  • Push Mowers (also known as Reel Mowers ) aren't just an old fashioned solution to cutting your lawn - they actually have many advantages (apart from being cheaper and quieter) compared to petrol and electric mowers.
In this video I compare 2 affordable mowers that can be found commonly here in Australian hardware stores. The Ozito Push Lawn Mower and The Flymo H40.
But the point of this video really is to high light the magic that a quality push mower can bring to your lifestyle.
    Enjoy!

After watching your excellent review and actually having that exact ozito I upgraded and have never looked back
    Thanks.
Oh everyone asks is it hard to push NO its easy, you still have to push a motor mower.
Having a two tiered yard I use to heave the motor mower up 7 stairs. I carry the flymo with one hand.

I purchased a FLYMO about 15 years ago.
My lawn area was about 6x5 meters.
It cut beautifully. Better than a petrol type. Planning to buy another one soon.

Very informative. For what it's worth, the Flymo has the option of a catcher as a separate purchase. The Ozito doesn't appear to have that option.

Further to my last post it is worth mentioning a couple more tricks with them. If the mower starts to disengage it is most often because dirt has accumulated inside. Take off the wheel covers and give everything inside a thorough clean. Scrape out any dirt between the teeth on the interior of the wheels and between the teeth on the cylindrical sprocket inside. Clean out the little hole and its metal slider, which should slide very freely. I use light oil for that purpose. The weak point, it seems to me, lies with the triple ridges on the inside of the sprocket. These engage with the sliders in opposite directions on each wheel. After months of hard use the plastic ridges wear down; if only they were made of metal or spare parts were available ! To be honest I haven't found the instruction booklet particularly helpful; I've had about six of these mowers and just found things by trial and error. The best cutting level and contact between rotor and blade I have found to be very dependent on personal taste. Anyway, you can often get a few extra months out of them by the aforementioned cleaning and taking the time to get the cutting parameters right for you.

With the flymo h40 my blade tighting screws fell out while helping my mum with her lawn and she has a really tall lawn and I couldn’t find them so what i did is I simply got some metal wire and stuck the wire through the holes where the bolt was to tighten and loosen the blade and I bent the wire with some pliers and my hands and it’s perfect now why are you wondering why I need that bolt it was because when mowed the blade underneath would fall down and not cut properly so the wires great if I need to tighten the blades bend the wire loosen the blades unbend the wire simple as that and if anyone’s having the same problems with the blade try this method

Back in the good old days, (1950s) we had an amazing push type reel mower; solid cast steel or iron frame & wheels with rubber tread meant that it got traction and had momentum; the handle bar and roller were turned wood and the shaft connecting the mower to the handlebar was timber. Where is that mower now?
Sorry for my nostalgic digression! I have a Flymo H40 and I have given it a lot of use & abuse on my bush-block. I prefer it now to my petrol and battery alternatives. I leave it just outside my door, and so I can grab it and push it in front of me going to and back from the shed, or when I feel I just need a few minutes of exercise.
Downside: The ratchet drive mechanism uses a steel against plastic system, and that is now failing, (obviously inevitable). I'm going to see if I can get two plastic replacements (one in each wheel)

a lot of really comes down to just where on the body, that the handle joins to it. The Ozkito is of the genra that has the handle join to the body far back down nearer the rear roller, which means that withless down force upon the drive wheel - that the drive wheels skip and lose traction.
The Flymo has the handle join further forward, which enable more traction. However the Flymo suffers more from having the entire body rotate forward when the mower encounters heavier grass.
In rotating the body forward (it is actually toppling forward),
the cutting blades lift from the ground,
and so you have to repeat that section of grass many tomes over to get it all cut down to the desired height.
I actually have an earlier Flymo, the HGL5/33,but the concept (and problem) is the same.
I agree the Flymo is a better choice, especially for the longer life compared to the Ozkito.
I have created a cure for the Flymo body lifting problem: go to Bunnings etc - and procure a Pneumatic Stay.
I use the 250mm Light to medium weight one.
It is used normally as a gas strut for upward lift opening doors, on desks for example (I am a lateral thinker)
Attaching one of theses Stays between one of the Handle spars, to a point on the body near the adjustment knob - has cured my mower from skipping the bodylift problem.
There needs to be a bit of trial and error, as there are some factors to consider:
The pneumatic stay offers more resistance, the further in that the tubing is pushed.
I drilled holes in the handles, to place the Stay at a point where it is at maximum extension, and has my handles at the height comfortable to me.
If you have the Stay compressed too much, too much weight is taken from the Drive wheels, and they will skip.
The only thing to stop this mower now, no matter what type of grass - is a big twig/stick
It will now eat all buffalo grass for breakfast!!
The Flymo, with this modification, will now behave like the best Qualcast mower! (I have one of them too)

I could see that Flymo rear roller was bouncing up and down which means the push bars are too fat forward on the mower which means the rear roller won't be producing any stripes on the lawn. Maybe the 400 has been corrected

If you watch your own slow motion pass of the Flymo you will quite clearly see the rear roller bouncing up and down off the lawn. What's there to be confused about ?

    • @reflexfilms
      @reflexfilms  Před rokem

@@a.c.1474 how does that affect stripes? i didn't even know the rear roller was supposed to create stripes - and have no idea how it could - it's just a plastic roller that supports the back and allows height adjustment. Surely the further apart the rollers the less effect from bouncing.
It sounds like you have some insight into lawnmower design - I would love to hear more.

    • @a.c.1474
      @a.c.1474 Před rokem

      @@reflexfilms
The roller whether plastic or metal pushes the grass over bending it slightly after it's cut. Obviously the more pressure downwards will produce a more pronounced stripe, that's why older / vintage cylinder mowers had quite large metal rollers of considerable weight producing lovely stripes. Obviously these nowadays have lost their popularity because of their cost and ironically their heaviness. If you try to replace these with lighter machines it can be done successfully but it's critical to get the balance of the machine correct. Where the push bars are connected to the mower they should be low down on the sides and nearer to the roller rather than the spindle of the cutter. On the machine you were using this wasn't the case thus the rear roller was bouncing and floating literally making the roller more cosmetic rather than performing it's intended function of pressing down on the grass to fold it over. It would be worth your while to reposition the end of the handles on the machine by bolting them on further back and lower and make a program on this as it would be extremely interesting to many people and would improve it's performance considerably.
