He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general in 2016 and was appointed to the 2nd Border Brigade Command in Çukurca district of Hakkari. In this role, he conducted successful operations against the PKK. With the Border Eagles under his command, he cleared Kaletepe, which has strategic importance in the border region, from the PKK, and had a base set up here.
He was promoted to the rank of major general in 2019 and was appointed as the Chief of Operations of the Land Forces. He played a role in strategic and tactical planning in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and played a major role in winning the Nagorno-Karabakh War. After the war, he became the Azerbaijan Mission Group Commander.
In 2022, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed to command the 7th Corps. Lieutenant General Bahtiyar Ersay became an adviser to the Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov. Ersay Pasha was seen in Azerbaijani uniform for the first time after he was appointed to this duty.
