  • I've wanted to make this video for a long time. The Countryman and Clubman JCW share much in common but are also very different. If you are in the market for a Mini but need a little more room and practicality which one should you buy ?
I put my 2019 Countryman JCW up against the latest 2021 Countryman JCW in a range of tests...and the result are in !

My Boss has the Mini Clubman JCW and loves it. He’s now 79 and in the 35 years I’ve worked for him he’s had some crazy cars over the years. He’s had a 944 Turbo SE, Mercedes E500, Bentley Turbo R, BMW 750iL, 964 Carrera 4, then he moved to Australia for a couple of decades. He moved back in the mid 2000s and then the love of minis started with a Cooper S and the rest as they say is history.

I have owned both the Porsche 964 and 993 Carreras. Great every-day sport cars, but impractical for a family of four. I purchased the R55 S / N14 (still have it garaged) and now the R60 JCW, which I bought from a garage in Geneva last January for only CHF 13,900 (about US$15K at the time), included an extra set of winter tires/alloy rims and a 1 year warranty. The R60 JCW was very clean and garage maintained when purchased; fully loaded (Aero kit, navigation, sun roof, all leather, upgraded sound system, 19 in. JCW alloy rims, etc.). This car has been very reliable and does not burn oil...though I do change the oil at twice the recommended frequency (i.e. N18 engine preventative maintenance).
Mini's are addictive. Really fun to drive. EASY to park. Decent on fuel consumption. The All 4 is excellent in the snow. I spruced it up with stripes ($40), chrome caps for the windshield nozzles ($10), real carbon caps for the side mirrors ($60), black faux leather (red stitched) interior floor and cargo liners ($180) [all off of AliExpress] and a red-striped OEM grill I grabbed on eBay($110). I also bought an after-market polished ALU front strut stabilizer bar from a UK dealer on eBay for only $140 (delivered to CH). Silver exterior with black leather interior...the car looks fantastic IMO. For the money, I could not be happier. Forget about the money...I am simply happy with this car.
One just needs to keep the vehicle maintained. I use 98-100 octane petrol, as it is a DFI engine. I also check the oil level after every second fill of the gas tank. I have thought about swapping the vehicle out for a Macan or Panamera...then decided to continue to invest in the R60 JCW. Maybe an after-market rear stabilizer bar, cold-air intake, oil catch-can, upgraded exhaust, engine tune...fun projects for next year. Will do a transmission fluid/filter change within the next three months. At the end of next year, at 95k miles, I will also change out the timing chain/guides, turbo loader, and water pump...that will probably run me another $2500. Still cheap, considering the overall investment in this type of vehicle.
If you buy such a car used, as I have, make sure you have a reliable/trust-worthy local garage to do the maintenance. No sense to use a Mini dealer for maintenance when the car is out of warranty. I only purchase used after an inspection by my mechanic...due diligence is key when buying a used Mini. IMO.

I borrowed a Countryman for a longer term test drive, and them a clubman, and chose the Clubman to have more of the MINI driving experience. Having the lower opening height for the boot was a plus for me too. I have a number of pups and one has had knee issues all her life and for to get in and out is much easier with the Clubman. When I spec out both cars, with the back seats down, the Clubman had just slightly more space than the Countryman, (2021 versions of both cars)
You mentioned the roof rails, My MINI didn’t come with them. There is a retro kit (multiple part numbers) for the Clubman roof rails from MINI. The issue is finding someone brave enough to do the installation. I found a auto collision shop here in Colorado, USA that installed them for me, and I love them!
I have driving my share of cars in my 62 years, and I have to say, I love driving my Clubman the most, and it is not even a JCW, but an S!!

I don’t normally take much interest in the Mini as such as they don’t match my needs but I must admit that this Countryman has a certain look that actually appeals to me. I don’t need the JCW but will certainly take a look at what the 4x4 range has to offer.

Every time I start her up it brings a smile to my face. But, I do love my 2019 GTI. It is APR stage 1 (300hp, 320 torque). I am torn between both. After lots of research and searching, I managed to find one with lots of extras at a great price. No roof bars but surprisingly very few seem to have them fitted! Nice comparison, PP! The better head and legroom sold me on my '20 Countryman JCW over the Clubman. I have a very long torso, so most cars don't fit me. It is the *only* car with a sunroof/moonroof I have ever been able to fit in comfortably. I also managed to fit a large-sized Specialized Roll sportbike in the rear by turning the front wheel/handlebars 90 degrees. It's a tight fit, but it works. I agree about the analog driver binnacle vs. the digital. I'm seriously thinking about the Remus exhaust though after I upgrade to the Michelin PS4s. On my local MINI club runs on b-roads, I have yet to be left in any other MINI's dust. ;-) I cannot help but grin ear-to-ear every time I sit behind the wheel of my Countryman, and it is definitely my favorite car I've ever owned. It drives like a much smaller car, but with a comfortable ride and great utility in the back seat and boot.

I just ordered a JCW Clubman. I'm not planning on modifying it to the extent you do to yours, but can't wait for it to arrive. One of my previous cars was a Clubman S All4. It was easily my favorite car for long distance drives, looking forward to getting back into something similar! Just a little disappointed I have to trade in my JCW Coupe to do it, but I'll still have my MC40 for a weekend car.
And I've also had a plugin hybrid Countryman. While neither of my previous big MINIs are the same as these 2 300hp MINIs, I knew you'd end by saying you still prefer your Clubman. They're just more fun all around than the Countryman! Better looking, too.

    @montyzumazoom1337 Před 3 lety +1

Interesting Pete, another comprehensive review. I have driven a countryman (only a Cooper) as a lone car, and I was quite impressed generally.
I was also offered a test drive in a JCW countryman when I ordered my Clubbie as they didn’t have one of those to test, but I declined.
I knew how special the new JCW Clubbie was going to be and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The extra space in the Clubbie compared to my previous hatch is like a barn to me and very useful so I’m more than happy.
As previously mentioned somewhere, I have the adaptive dampers on mine and on normal setting they give a ready good ride. In sports mode they stiffen up to give a firmer ride but this is still very comfortable unless you hit a potholed road at town speeds.
I drive from 30 miles Brighton to Chichester and back every day to and from work. In the mornings it’s usually mid mode from the trip with the occasional blast in sport mode. Coming home 90`% of the time it’s in sports mode with dynamic traction switched on😜, easily drivable in town and all the way home. Quite often my route changes to go through Amberley, Storrington , Steyning and down past the cement works to the flyover. I love my Clubbie 🤗
The only thing that is frustrating my is the fitting of a rear dashcam. Easy on the hatchbacks but I cannot seem to find the best way of installing one on the Clubbie.
The barn doors swing away from the body as they open so it’s not easy to route the cables.
How about looking into this and doing a feature just for me-it would really help if I could find a solution (beg, beg, grovel..etc).
Love your vids mate, always a pleasure to watch.....(that’s another grovel).😂👍

Most people only fit front facing ones, but I tend to fit a rear facing one as well. However, as mentioned the barn doors on the Clubbie has presented a challenge that I haven’t overcome yet.
In your world you may have come across some expert installers of such things perhaps....?

I wanted to test drive a new Clubman in 2022 while my car was being serviced. Everything was good until I couldn't find my car insurance so they wouldn't allow me to test it. I have been driving Minis since 1968 I bought my first one in Northern Italy. I intend to continue driving Minis until I can no longer handle a car safely. I hope that means another 75 years or so. I have the only JCW in Cape Girardeau; people love looking at it. It is White with Red Top and stripes on the hood and side!.

I love your Clubman, the way it handles, color and stripes, exhaust sound, low profile tires (have same on my Honda), and split back hatch door, but I want more space in back for hauling, 4WD and it looks like Countryman wins for me. Fantastic review. Appreciate it.

Recently drove a countryman when my clubman was in for a service. Like you say bit more practical for getting lots of stuff in. That said, I still love my clubman. Better driving feel, as you said, you feel like your sat in the clubman and not on it, like the Countryman.

Great review. Would have been nice to compare boot sizes with cases or similar, for those of us who need to carry 4. Also, I can't live with the headlights on the countryman. Sad to learn of the limited rear legroom and the driver's view in the Clubman. Prefer a more elevated position for my wife, who currently is happy in a Golf SV (the newer Golf Plus).

I have a three MINI family. The '05 R52 cabrio for zipping turns with the top down...pop, pop...growl.
The '21 Countryman SE All4 PHEV which is only topped by the JCW in the 0-60. As a daily drive it delivers 60 mpg winter- 80 mpg summer doing the 40 miles to work round trip. I just added a "19 Clubman S All4 8 speed automatic with paddle shifters...It is a solid comfortable MINI and delivers punch in Sport mode but averages over 30 mpg when tooling around town and back. The driving fun factor list is R52 Cooper S 1st, next Clubbie, last Countryman...the last two being so much alike inside that they are operationally interchangeable.

When more Minis become pure EVs which seems to be sooner rather than later the Clubman/Countryman distinction might become somewhat different! Within BMW there are ideas of bringing back the Morris name (and even Wolseley) all as EVs, but that is a different story. People don´t seem to understand that a lot of focus is now directed towards designing cars completely without steering wheels (which will eventually obtain a similar status as the crank handle!).

1:38 - "the only thing I’d change from a styling point of view:" goes on to just mention stripes so I'm thinking ‘oh, no flaps on this one…'. 3.03 - ah, there we go, that’s more like it! :P Another very interesting review thanks Ped, I’d happily take either one (although probably the clubman myself too if I had to pick just one)

having owned and loved my F54 clubman for a few years now, the choice for me is a no brainer. the Clubman is the finest vehicle i have ever had the pleasure to own. this one is on rails at over 100mph down the old river road along the Mississippi in south La every weekend. the rarity and performance of my green goblin always gets a nod of approval and some healthy respect from the U.S. muscle monsters out here also. Not to shabby from the little MINI that can.....
