- But it wasn't all thrills and spills - the motorbike played a key role during World War II and it was army surplus bikes that introduced many to the joy and freedom of motorcycling in the 50s, a period now regarded as a golden age. With its obsession with speed and the rocker lifestyle, it attracted more than its fair share of social disapproval and conflict. Narrated by John Hannah.
It really shows you that Britain had the true purist culture of Motorcycling over the U.S ... where cars dominated ... Britain on the other hand really was more about Bicycles and Motorcycles. I can vouch for this having grown up as a lad in the 70's where even then little old ladies still got about the High St on their mopeds and motorised bicycles ... this is little old ladies! The Velo has always been strong in English culture ...
I have a army royal enfield 500 i always get the owd timers chatting i really do love those moments when they tell a good story of there biking youth. I alays make time to listen to them.
Lesley, a real one or an Indian modern ?
The many miles/Km ridden on my Vincent(HRD in the days when there were no speed limits out of towns in the 1960s - until British Motor Racing were accued of testing their cars on the then new M1 Motorway. The Vin was faster n Third Gear than just about all standard road bikes in Third gear. And handled very well too. Now aged 82, still got the great memories.
A great series
Thanks to all ...
Then and as part of this series
I'm still a sucker for my old Brit bikes. Too much history on them to let go. Especially my '69 Trophy.
Awesome piece!
Germany had not only BMW but NSU (Neckarsulmer) and Adler (hawk) thinking right off the top of my head. I believe NSU was a pioneer in 2-stroke engines.
Auf der Races bis Speedway.....Nur noch Mutig & Eleganter Fahren.......

This is a great 👍
I'm fortunate to own a '70 Commando & a '72 R75/5, & although the BMW is far superior to the Norton, my heart (& my $)goes to the the Commando.
@Return of the Native so basically the BMW is superior....if you completely redesign it. Seems legit.
Keep Trump....but I had to chuckle in agreement about your "complete redesign" comment to the previous poster. Spot on.

@ 6:39, is that a "twingle"?
Twingle is a twin that's timed/sparked so that both cylinders fire at the same time, so do the rider it feels like a single.
Rudge ?
lmao 12:52 made me laugh XD.
Anyone know where part 1 is?
