- A Little Bonus Tune-Up video this week featuring my "new" Chessie 2-8-2 Steam Loco that I never got to run on the last video.

Manufactured by Mehano in Czechoslovakia, now Slovenia. Two models used mostly the same basic parts and body shells - a 4-6-2 "Pacific" and a 2-8-2 "Mikado", like yours. Sold in a few versions and numerous liveries by a number of distributors from the mid 70's to about 2012 - Model Power, AHM, AHC, Life Like, etc. Some later ones sold by AHC had decent drive mechanisms, with 5 pole motors and flywheels. The tender is missing a rear facing "headlight" that looked just like the one on the front of the smokebox door, that went in the square hole.
Thanks you Scott
Yep, steam locomotives carried a backup light on the tender. This would be a perfect application for a directional LED. You could probably 3D print the housing of your choice. Note that pickups are only needed on the insulated wheel. The other side will conduct through the axle
Yep, there is a light housing and lens missing. It fits in the square hole.
I got a similar loco (in SP daylight paint scheme) and connected tender and loco with two wires to make pick-up even better.
There are thousands of these loco's around, or just tenders. You may gt one with the ligt on the tender and swap the light to this one. Or just make a light/housing with a fairly large LED.
That hole on the top of the tender is a reverse/running light. Housing and lens is
are missing🚂🇨🇦
yep should be a black plastic part , may be possible to make a working one out of clear plastic sprue runners and paint black once made
It's a directional back up light (red) on the tender.
Yup light prob for back up light on tender the hole on top seems like water fill but should b lid for or on it
NO, you're NOT a loser. You're still getting the hang of this hobby like so many of us still are. Yes, steam locomotives are tricky but worth the inclusion in your collection.
we should have a "Wrong Answer" list. Since so many posted right one
Wish I'd thought of that. I'll add a question like that in a future video.
Tap was to make sure weight didnt short out to motor etc
The Backup light is missing. The light slips up into a hole in that part. It probably fell out a long time ago and the owner ignored it. It is only suppose to come on when it backs up. AHM never did that.
also Dave with the steam locos DCC decoder goes in the tender if you ever convert it
You could add a sound decoder in the tender
I have one of these exact Mikado with smoke from Mehano. It looks like someone was in this loco and damaged one of the pickups. With some engineering, you could make all eight wheels pickup on the drivers with some bronze phosphor or brass strips. The locomotive is not a complete loss, but it will need some work. Adding some pickups to the drivers and installing two wires to up the tender pickups will greatly improve this locomotive. Another thought would be a cheap 5 pole motor upgrade. This would also improve the performance over 3 pole Mehano motor.
I actually bought some brass sheets to give this a go. Thanks for the reminder.
That's where you install the batteries
I'd put a sound card in there.
American Steam trains have lights on the backs of the tenders to show when the train is reversing.
Great video, I watch all of yours. I do a lot of this kind of work myself, and I have found that very small bridge rectafiers are remarkably inexpensive. = bidirectional lighting.
I bought a roll of rectifiers, will try them soon.
FYI; not all steam locos need a tender to run and some use tender for extra power pickup. The real trick is to look at the connection bar. Power feed needed has stiff spring wire part of it. No wire tender not needed for power. And if a harness may have DCC, but not all the time. Bachmann harness the worse do to the way it hooks up (certain models)
the back up light clipped onto the rear of the tender
You need a rolling road Dave
Reverse headlight for the tender
I think it's time to ditch the 9volt battery and buy yourself some alligator clips, the 9volt works, but at this point you would have much more control and be able to test different areas instead of just touching the wheels
Yeah. I have plenty of old 12v controllers I could rig up for the job.
i would modify draw bar on tender make use of tender pick ups
Might be easier just to add a couple of connecting wires, but yes, more pick ups would be great.
Yo need to purchase a pack of Guitar picks. They will aid you greatly as shims to take things apart instead of large thick screwdrivers.
But then I'll end up buying a guitar, and then another guitar, lol
Or you can put a business card or some other stiff card, plastic, etc. in between the clip and the shell to keep it separated as you work your way around. @@ScottRails
Well, you can try... but I will outbid you in the last 10 seconds on most of the guitars! ;) hahaha
Steam locos are not made to run upside down.
And make a programming track
I guess you know not to leave all DCC locomotives on the track when programming them with a new number or something or they will be all the same number 🤣
It looks like an old Reading Ho locomotive.
