Backdrop painted scenery and wobbly sets,how things have changed over the years.Just the right amount of people in the early days,way too many now.I used to watch every episode but now I will go six months between viewing.

Ooo, that Albert's a one! Telling Christine that Frank's eloped with Martha Longhurst! ( mind, he could have said Frank had eloped with Ena Sharples!😂😂😂)
Frank Barlow by this time had been in coronation street 3 years and with the exception of his wife getting killed " which upset him a bit for a couple of weeks" and an argument with Len Fairclough about his son, Didn't really have much to do or say, he just mumbled his way around looking like a character in search of an exit, Giving him a much younger girlfriend but keeping him the same, made him look even more out of place.
His character started off with a purpose, but he very quickly seemed to have been resided to the sidelines, even though he had plenty of screen time.
Nobody tuned in to avidly await for His next move, as it was normally the same as always, shuffling about either looking for his pipe or having some mundane conversation in the Rovers.
His wife getting killed ‘which upset him a bit for a couple of weeks’. Harsh- but, now you mention it😂😂😂 ( almost like saying how Christine’s mum died which upset her a bit for a couple of episodes)
This is an insightful comment, though, in many ways, it touches on why I like Frank. He led a very conventional life as the head of a happy household. When his wife died, he did not know how to cope with this new reality. With his sons grown, he was alone--no longer the pipe-smoking patriarch of a family. It's clear that he and Christine were mismatched, and she could never have been what he needed her to be (another Ida, perhaps?), but he would have done his best to make her happy. It's a pity that she didn't seem to want to be happy. Frank is the everyman who feels lost when his view of reality is upended.
Angela Crowe who played Doreen was Veronica Birtles mother in Grange Hill 25 years later.

Acted like her too in a way but Christine was far more likeable. Suzy was a icy cold user.

Yes she does, though Suzie never had mental health crises. Such a tragedy in real life Christine ended up with the same fatal condition as her screen mother in the story.
Christine definitely is a bit unbalanced, and that by her own admission. What a cold character, and she only has feelings for herself and pities herself. Poor Frank. Still that's what old men get when they mess with such a young woman. What was he thinking? Anyhow, he's had a narrow escape. Living, day by day, with that crack pot would have been a disaster.
Today it would be called mental health issues and she'd have been seing a psychologist, back in those days there were 2 options, or 3 if you count getting on with it and dealing with it, other 2 being tranquilizers or being sent to a mental hospital.
In today's society we are encouraged to sympathise with everyone except the victims of these loons, that's why the world has gone mad.
Today mental Health problems has become a social media buzz word, almost everyone is suffering from them.
50 years ago you were just feeling down and you picked yourself back up on your own and became a stronger person for it.
Today it's almost a lifestyle, everyone is depressed because they want sympathy
She had a nervous breakdown brought on by her mother's death and living alone thereafter.
She was a character looking to get out of the street and someone to save her and was wise enough to realize that in the end.
She realized only she could make herself happy.
She’s a surprisingly complex character for the time period - I think the actress does a great job bringing those nuances out. Shame she died young in 1984.
Such an odd pairing of Frank Barlow and Christine Appleby.
She was using him to get away from the Street. Luckily she realized this in time and went on to be happy elsewhere.
They had to do something with frank I think as the actress that played Ida left and the original idea was for Barlows to be main family

Christine was very cold, I felt sorry for Frank, even though it was an odd match tbh.
Yeah. She breaks up with Frank in much the same way she broke up with Joe Makinson back in '61. She makes a telling comment: "Why don't people hate me for what I do to them." Christine, in her own way, was quite screwed up and lost.
