The roosevelt deal was the stroke of genius that was important, ww2 got America out of this on top too. Redistibutive taxation theres some food for thought.

Periods of mass unemployment were not unknown to the majority of labourers and casual workers before the Great War (i.e. before 1914). The arms race between Britain, Germany, France and Italy - and elsewhere - gave a false of security to what were, in fact, piece work jobs. And the older Poor Laws though still in effect were gradually modified by pre-War Conservative and Liberal administrations; this led inevitably to a vastly inflated State involvement in almost every aspect of life, e.g. National Insurance, AD 1911, tied both the employer and employed to State funding or political policy; this also increased State-paid employment, direct - through civil servants, and indirect - via Labour Exchange/ Dole Hand-outs, cf, Belloc, The Servile State.
Massive war-time debts put harsh limits on what cautious governments could offer. These same debts dramatically reduced State spending on War Office spending; and thus the down-turn in spending hit the employment of casual workers, then of labourers, and even of skilled workers. Nonetheless, huge paper-fortunes were still to be won in gambling on investments, especially on bank funded commerce.
A new South Sea Island bubble burst, leaving the middle classes broke, and the State technically bankrupt .. though Printed Money more or less hid naked truths of that reality. We have not even yet come to terms with the facts of State-run economies, the use of paper I-O-U currencies, or how much a government's policies (and how well or badly they are implemented) affects all but the mega-rich/ powerful. Although it is still often dismissed as a Right Wing or Conservative or Reactionary hit piece, Mr Belloc set out a clear insight into many of today's problems (and why they are the way they are): czcams.com/video/j92Nd4xZIME/video.html

Sorry Mr. Green but I think this piece has been poorly mistitled. Hardly a mention of the 1920's. The British economy had real challenges after the war.
