The process of forming a new country is complex and requires meeting certain criteria, including having a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and the ability to form relations with other nation states.
In the past two decades, only five countries have gained independence.
There are several potential new countries that may be formed in the future. The East African Federation, a proposed federal union between several African countries, has faced challenges such as issues with cooperation among member countries and corruption in some governments.
Kosovo and Albania have also discussed the possibility of forming a union, with the potential for economic benefits such as increased trade, investment, and economic growth. However, the idea remains just a political idea for now.
The disputed territory of Transnistria, located in Moldova, has a desire for independence due to cultural and linguistic differences, but the conflict between the two sides remains unresolved.
Somaliland, a region in modern day Somalia, declared independence following a civil war in 1991, but has not been recognized as a sovereign nation.
The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, also known as Western Sahara, has a complex history and has not yet gained full independence.
Bougainville, located in Papua New Guinea, is likely to successfully gain independence following a referendum in which an overwhelming majority voted in favor of independence.
The U.S. territory of Puerto Rico has sought greater autonomy or independence from the United States, but the idea remains largely discussed.
The Republika Srpska, an autonomous entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina, has sought independence but the idea has not gained widespread support.
The Kurdish people, an ethnic group without a sovereign country, have sought recognition and self-determination, with some seeking a greater degree of autonomy and others advocating for the incorporation of Kurdish-populated regions into a Kurdish state.
It will be interesting to see how the future plays out and which countries may emerge in the coming years.

It's more than just East Timor (which fun fact, means East East) breaking away from Indonesia. Portugal originally granted them independence in 1975, but Indonesia proceeded to invade with permission from the US to stop communism. Indonesians committed horrific crimes there to stop them from breaking away, but thankfully a multination peacemaking force led by Australia sent help.
However, Australia had different motives. They wanted to share Timorese oil, so they preyed on this would-be new nation to get the better end of the stick. Want to know why East Timor is poor despite having oil? It's because of many factors like its uneven terrain making farming and water gathering difficult and much of its economic infrastructure being destroyed during the Indonesian occupation, but one of the reasons is because of Australia. And the whistleblower who tried to expose Australia's dealings with East Timor was arrested because Australia didn't want to destroy their reputation
Australia is just no different than the US, except they're more of a bully in the SEA region
It fortunately didn’t work for australia by arresting them, since we know this now.

You did a most excellent job on this video, Reed! There are just a few things that I'll mention. Serbia will never willingly give up sovereignty over Kosovo. They wish to see it remain as part of Serbia under its current autonomous status. In fact, only a small handful of nations have recognized its full independence. While the majority of the people in the region are ethnically Albanian, the rest of Serbia sees that as being secondary to being Serbian. Moving on to Africa. Tribalism is probably the biggest stumbling block after the corruption of some of the governments in East Africa when it comes to forming a unified East African nation. They have to see themselves as a united people before they can unite. The question of complete Puerto Rican independence has been a perennial one for many decades. The majority of the people of Puerto Rico favor the status quo, remaining as a more or less autonomous region associated with the United States. The independence movement there, while loud and vocal at times, is not as wide spread as they would want you to believe. Keep up the fantastic work. I'm looking forward to seeing another full length video from you sometime in the not too distant future.

Calling Kosovo a country is a bit controversial as it's not a full UN member state since currently, 101 countries out of 193 member states recognize it. Not to mention the country it separated from, Serbia, doesn't recognize it either. The only time Kosovo had an independence referendum was in 1991, and the only country that recognized it then was Albania. This referendum eventually sparked the Kosovo War in 1998 to 1999 which NATO famously got involved in. Then UNSCR 144 passed which established the United Nations Interim Administration Mission, and provisions for self-administration, but didn't have another independence referendum and still recognized FR Yugoslavia/Serbia sovereignty

In regards to Puerto Rico, the latest two non-binding referendums (2017 and 2020) voted in favor of STATEHOOD. The House recently passed the Puerto Rico Status Act, which would give PR a BINDING referendum with three options, Independence, Statehood, or Free Association. But this still would need to pass the Senate. The last time a Puerto Rico Status Act to give them a binding referendum passed the House was in 1998, and it failed to pass the Senate.
I can definitely see them going the Free Association route if they don't choose statehood. Free Association is also independence, but this comes with the benefits of being able to visit the US whenever they want without a visa nor a stay limit (this includes being able to work in the US freely), defended by the US military, provides US economic assistance, and getting programs and services like the USPS and FEMA. This satisfies the independence crowd and the statehood crowd. Micronesia, Marshall Islands, and Palau all have this Free Association status with the US.
Puerto Rico is never going to be a state. Both those referendums are total BS, the 2017 referendum 97% for statehood, but only 22% of the island turned out because everyone against statehood boycott it. The 2020 referendum 52% voted for statehood out of the 54% of people who showed up. Really if you do the math its only like 30% that really want statehood, and Puerto Rican statehooders don't want to join the US because they want "Equality" or are "Proud Americans", they just want money and believe statehood is a bailout quickfix to all the islands problems. Those politicians in DC calling for Puerto Rico to be made into a state are just virtue signaling because statehood for Puerto Rico is being thrown around the US as if its some sort of civil rights movement, when really its not. You see how they voted on it in the house in the very last days of the congressional session, they knew it had absolutely no chance in the senate and just voted on it just to look nice. Independence is the only way to go, if we have a referendum and the options are Free Association or Full Sovereignty, I do believe that Free Association would win, most Puerto Ricans are still brainwashed into believing the island is nothing without the US.
Puerto Rico will never be independent country ever.
@@JuanOrtiz-ee5ln Support on the island for Independence is actually growing big time because everyone is waking up to the lies and corruption of the statehood party PNP and the mismanagement and neglect by the US government. Statehood is never going to happen and it never should, it would be detrimental to both the US and PR financially, politically, and culturally. Also if you are a statehooder and believe Puerto Rico shouldn't be independent, explain why? Also if your just going to say "Look at Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela" you need some more education, there's over 100 Independent countries in the world, using only those three as an example isn't proving anything, they all are in terrible shape because they are all communist far left dictatorships.
Growing when independent always get 2% of the votes?
@@JuanOrtiz-ee5ln Yeah you clearly are in the dark about everything, in the last election support for Independence grew to 30%.
Good editing.

Bougainville is likely to gain independence as the Republic of the North Solomons, which is the name by which they declared independence in 1975.

Scotland, Northern Ireland, Quebec, Catalonia etc
I’m pretty sure Puerto Rico wants to become a US state than prefer independence. Because joining the union would benefit them a lot more
Keep it up dude i really like videos like this related to history and geography. 💙🤘
Great job on the video, though in the last part there were a few Mistakes about Puerto Rico. 1. The territory of Puerto Rico is not just the main island but also the small island between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, along with the islands of Vieques and Cuebara, next to the USVI which is another US territory. Puerto Rico had another non binding referendum in 2020 on U.S. statehood, a majority of the registered voters voted and voted in favor of US statehood like in 2012. The Puerto Rican Status act recently passed the US House, but now has to be re-passed as legislation in both the Senate and House after the new congress is sworn in.
Yeah and only 54% of the registered voters showed up to vote in that nonbinding referendum, that's basically half the island, and in the half only 52% voted yes, so that's really like 27% of the island wanting statehood. There is no chance that bill is going to be revived with Republicans in control of the house of representatives and committees, and even if it did get revived there's no way its getting pass the senate with the filibuster still up. Puerto Rico is still an unincorporated territory meaning it was never destined for statehood and it never should. @Reed Schultz Geo, research this topic yourself, these statehooders are leaving stuff out just to get you to push propaganda for statehood for them.
@@jlm3744 while I agree that the Republicans will most likely kill the bill, the voter turnout was still a majority of the registered voter population, and the majority of the voters said yes to statehood. If a binding referendum was held with the same voter turnout and similar results, it would be a valid vote for statehood as the people decide by the vote. So even if others don’t vote, they can’t complain because they choose not to vote. I will continue to believe that statehood has a majority, until another referendum, and will continue to support that cause for my fellow Americans living in PR. And it’s current status has no effect on whether or not PR can become a state of the union or not.
@@dylanshaffer2184 Dude these referendums are complete BS, they are only setup by the corrupt statehood party PNP just to get more people to vote for them. Really if you do the math with all the referendum results it's only like 30% that want statehood. And if you actually have been to Puerto Rico, the statehooders don't want statehood because they want "Equality" or they want to be "Proud Americans", they vote for it because they just want more money and live on welfare, the statehood politicians that go to DC only say that BS about Equality and being Proud Americans only say that to win over ignorant Americans like you to preach statehood like if it was some sort of civil rights movement, when its not. Also you are a colonizer, you're not Puerto Rican and you're pushing statehood onto us when there isn't a clear answer on if we want it or not.

Go to Puerto Rico ask in the streets for someone who is a statehooders and ask why, the answer will be "I want more" Benefits, Money, or someone in their family wants it so they just follow, they don't give a crap about Equality or being Proud. Statehood is never going to happen and it never should. Puerto Rico should be a free Independent nation so we can open ourselves to the world and fix our nation without asking for permission from the US all the time.
Also some of the other people commenting about Puerto Rico people are leaving stuff out about the referendums just to make it look like the majority of the island wants statehood they are lying do not listen to them, the statehooders are very corrupt.
If Puerto Rico become independent I’m moving to florida
