Amazing Grace was born in the same place as Dan Wheldon, Olney, Milton Keynes, England.
I actually met Dan Wheldon when I went to an IndyCar Race at Chicagoland Speedway and I even have an autographed picture from him somewhere
Marty Reid wins an Emmy in my book for the sign off. It brings me to tears, every goddamn time.
You can hear him trying to hold it together when he's on the phone with Jamie Little. The poor guys has called 3 fatal races and almost a 4th with Geoff Bodine at Daytona.

Let this be a lesson... These boys put their lives on the line for our entertainment. To Me... Dan was almost like INDY's new Goldenboy. A larger then life personality that I found hard not to like... Truly a legend in the making. Young... Extremely talented guy... With a beautiful family... As a lover and fan of all sports. Especially racing. My heart goes out to Dan's family... Dan's Race team... And everyone who was at the race today who witnessed the tragedy. R.I.P Dan God-Speed...

I started watching indycar in 2001 and yes there was the deaths of Tony Renna in 2003 and Paul Dana in 2006 those were also sad but I saw Dan win 2 times at my home track at Kansas Speedway and saw him win his both Indy 500 wins I remember at the 2003 Indy 500 he came by us late in the race tried to make a late pass ended up crashing and did a flip but he mastered Indy I'm glad I got his autograph the day before the 2011 Indy 500 and got my picture with him I remember watching this live with my family and Girlfriend I was so heartbroken and I hardly cry and I cried uncontrabbly for days I still get choked up watching this and seeing his car at the museum at Indy every year RIP Dan miss you so much man I know you were watching over Dario at Houston in 2013 and Dixon at Indy this year
I still remember when this Happened, I was sitting on the couch watching this race. My dad came in and could describe the horror in my eyes when the crash happened. Soon after his death, the 2011 Daytona 500 cars had decals along the line of RIP Dan Wheldon. May Dan rest in peace and may he find peace in death.
This is something I always worry about as a driver… but It’s never ever gonna stop me from climbing into that car. It’s what we love to do. It’s our blood, Our lively hood.

This is still without a doubt to me the most heart-wrenching moment in all of motorsports. It's almost impossible to watch this with a dry eye, especially when they played Amazing Grace. Can't believe this has been 12 years since Dan left us too soon, but Dan's legacy continues to live with this current car as many lives have been safe because of this car and the aeroscreen that they installed. Major respect to the drivers and team members to mustard up the courage to do this for Dan, his family, friends and fans. R.I.P Dan. 🙏🕊️
The darkest day in IndyCar history. The fans loved Wheldon and so did the other drivers. In many ways he was IndyCar’s Dale Earnhardt. Many drivers have unfortunately died in open wheel racing but his passing was the one that hurt the fans the most
The audio of this gives me that ASMR feeling. The tires going slowly on the track and the engines in low gear plus the slightly un-understandable track announcers leading into Amazing Grace. That was a terrible day. My son and I went to the public memorial. I don't know why, but I find the audio of this tribute to be almost otherworldly. I think we'll see him again.
The entire racing world becomes very small when a driver dies behind the wheel of a race car. No matter what form of racing the sense of loss is felt by all.
This day last year was so unreal, hard to believe it really happened, this tribute is just so moving.
R.I.P. dan Weldon. 1978-2011. He was a great racer and A 2 time champion from 2005-2011. At least he died what he loved doing most. May he Rest In Peace. We all will miss you. Like this to help support the pit crew and to remember dan Weldon.

everytime i watch this it still brings a tear to my eye. just to hear amazing grace in the background on a tribute just makes it that much harder..
I'm not a big fan of Marty Reid (the lead commentator on the ABC broadcast), but how he handled this, especially the sign off, was absolutely fantastic.
What a beautiful and touching tribute. This makes me cry every time I watch it.

I was racing in quarter midgets (not old enough to race midgets at the time) when the crash happened and was listening on the radio when they announced his death. It hurt to hear then and it still does. I made it home in time to watch the 5 lap tribute and you could hear a pin drop when watching. My entire family was in shock, myself included
This moment right here is the reason I, many years later, still cry when I hear Amazing Grace played on bagpipes. Every time I hear that I have the image in my head of these cars, the people crying, it all comes back and I think it always will.

I never got to know Dan weldon that well but coming from a racing fan sence I was really little and seeing this over and over and over watching this makes me hurt inside, we was a great racer, a great father and a great figure, we had such a bright future for him if he survived that crash, rip dan Weldon 💔😢🕊

It's impossible not to cry watching this, I read on the newspaper this morning that he was dead and I just couldn't believe it. I am going to play IndyRace League with him now as my tribute :)

I remembered it, after My Band Competition at Glen Rose, I've watched the race, and then the that announcement happen I've was silent about it, this is beyond devastating since the Dale Earnhardt Death at the final lap at the final turn at the 2001 Daytona 500.

We love to bash Marty Reid for his NASCAR commentary, but in Indycar, he was awesome. And his last words in this sequence fit just perfectly.
Marty Reid may have his problems, but when he says something good, chances are you're never forgetting them.
The last words said on the 2011 season are still some of the saddest words I have ever heard.
He made a lot of mistakes, but when something bad happened there was nobody more professional.
It's still the worst day for me as a motorsports fan. The only reason that I never watch these videos is because they bring me to tears and I hate crying. :'(

Some want to be fighter pilots, champion fighters or rock stars... little kids put up posters of Indy cars hoping to reach for the stars, because stars like Dan had shown them they could. It is said that energy can never disappear, it can only change. He is with you, I say this of no denomination, no belief... but in its most simple truth, I know neither you or Mr. Wheldon... but I can feel the love you have in your heart for him, make no doubt of it being known... I don't think I'd be this compelled to say this if not because it was meant to... I didn't plan on it, but I had to. You're a wonderful person, with a big heart. We all have a race to finish. The best of us just make us look slow. Be well, I really hope you will.

Man, It's hard to watch this, imagine the feeling of those drivers saying goodbye to Dan...
It's not everyday that you see such a tragic event like this. However, life goes on and the only way to honor such a great man like him is to race. Race until you think your heart is going to give out, then race some more. Dan lost his life doing the thing that he loved... racing. Therefore, we can't let motor racing go under just for a tragedy like this. He would want what he loved the most to continue to grow... and that's we're going to do.

ever since he won the 05 championship ive been in idol to him and now he with god becoming a ghost and guardian angel to indycar forever

R.I.P Dario Franchitti’s Racing Career. He’s still with us, but was forced to retire due to a wreck much more violent than Dan’s.
Dario’s crash reminds me a bit of Doc Hudson being forced to retire from racing back in 1954.
During a NASCAR event in 1988, Bobby Allison was forced to retire from competition after a crash. He was unable to do a lap or more after the green flag dropped. Instead, he earned $1750 for taking the green flag.
In 2018, Danica Patrick’s racing career came to an end after crashing at the Indy 500. Before that, she crashed at the Daytona 500, which ended her NASCAR career, which meant she never got to win a race in NASCAR. However, she did secure a win back in 2008 during her successful career at the Indy Japan 300 which took place at Twin Ring Motegi in Motegi, Japan.
Jerry Nadeau’s career in auto racing after he crashed during a practice session in 2003. After retiring from the NASCAR circuit, he went on to mentor future racers.

I watched live and was speechless and never shut the TV off until 6:01 eastern time when it was announced and i broke down. I used to think racing is the answer to everyone’s problems but then I saw racing invented new problem, devastating problems, then the crash at Las Vegas showed us Dan’s death, Dan Weldon was the perfect balance between us and racing, he taught us that life needs a balance, racing can improve our lives but so can people, if we focus on one expense of the other that’s when the balance is lost, the racing world will find its way again this time with then Welden as our compass, in the versus channel on nbc he said about the new cars with safer upgraded cars coming out on the 2012 or 2020
