Kurt Rosenwinkel - Stella by Starlight - H.O.G Improvisation Chords on Ultimate-Guitar Version 233: *5*/5 Stars from 8349 users Capo 2 Intro: Am F C G ...
I apparently just awoke from a coma. Seriously, I have missed so much. I guess I wasn't ready for such inspired genius. I am both humbled and elated at my discovery. Thx Kurt.
Also a little depressing 😕 ... How 🤔 ever far you are on the guitar 🎸. There is also so much more to learn ... It s an endless yourney. And my nature is I like to be able to finish 😌 something.
I saw him playing once with john scofield...I was blown away by them both. This guy has a perfect knoledge of his instrument, I can't even imagine the amount of hours he spent studying in his life...
I am a fan of Rosen winkel too, but after a solo of Scofield, I thnink it is difficult to not get pale after a few bars, dynamically and rythmically Rosen winkel being a genius still has got somthing to learn from Scofield, choise of note harmonic feel etc etc makes him already great player...
also listen to last tune of scofield-stern there stern trys to immitate scofield, it is realy strange to see him loose his style at that moment, I think Alan Holdsworth John Scofield and Alan Holdsworth are most renewers,
reminds me of the first time i watched jimmy page play guitar when i was super young... captivating... great reminder of why i started playing, thank you for the nostalgia kurt!
Attended a masterclass with this guy about 5 years ago when I was 19. Completely changed how and what I practiced and what I do as a guitar player and composer. He basically called everyone out for not knowing what exactly the major scale can do. He has a great ear and knows what’s he’s talking about but he always keeps it simple in the most complex way.
Guitar teacher here. You know this now already from experience but, so many people skirt the more involved major scale stuff thinking they know it all, but there's just so many ways to milk it you can never truly say you do. Barry Harris did the same, un-egoic verbal beatdown followed by demonstration of the difference between someone with true control. You hit the nail on the head with that last sentence, to kind of elaborate I think the route to that level requires a firm handle on fundamentals of permutation, from there you're making use of powers (the mathematical exponents kind) to compound your options, like a tree that grows from seed and bifurcates it's branches over time- If you know the major scale everywhere you can form any kind arrangement of chord and generate the rest of the chord scale by moving along the scale degrees. The part that takes the lions share of time is finding some way to manage all the branches and options you gather and put it to work making real music. That's a question I'd love to dig into Kurts mind on, but he'd probably just say it play it a bunch until you have one way to play it then keep playing it.
Highly technical stuff that only a handful of accomplished musicians can afford to experiment, and Kurt makes it sound so damn beautiful!! I like the Latin stuff he does with Caipi a lot, but also appreciate this type of inner space he creates with his music. Thanks for sharing this!
I never hear this fella 1 time before yesterday, i watch the way he patiently plays, smooth effortless beautiful guitar work, I knew I was going to emulate his patience, I had some weakness and pain big time in my fret hand so playing with the smooth, graceful finger work was perfect for bridging some major obstacles, instead of losing time being unable to play harder. faster. as I was doing at the time, I can rehab atleast my fret arm wrist shoulder, bicep, elbow.
Thing is.... he ain#t doing much - he just being efficent and playing a song. No magic. Just conviction, love, and practice. End result: magic. Just play
Man, this pedal is almost another instrument in its own right. Even if I could play like Kurt (I can't), I still wouldn't be able to produce this sound... amazing!
I am consistently blown away or left speechless by Kurt. This is easily one of the most potent performances I've ever heard/seen. It's truly a rare delight when a musician has the right combination of heart, intellect, and transcendent technique like Kurt.
Some of this comment section is just disgusting. This is expression that stretches tradition and honours it at the same time. If you want to hear “Stella” then listen to the fucking original. The harmonic and melodic information is there. If this is your reaction to this piece of art then stop calling yourself a jazz fan.
A genius. How he is not up there with Pat Metheny I do not know. I love Pat, but Kurt NEEDS to be recognized as an innovator, master, heart bender, soul reacher, and why not??????
He's pretty active this month and next month though, touring Japan and China, to CA and on to Spain and Portugal. Often when I look he's often playing in some obscure club in Denmark or Holland haha and as you say often not that many appearances.
does anyone know of any other videos like this one? i want to hear more of this kind of playing - those chords at the start are so beautifully dissonant.
Holy shiz............. I actually have never seen anyone play the guitar like that. I mean, it's kinda normal for me I guess since I focus on more of the traditional jazz. I'm learning about the modern ones now.
has anyoneany idea of what of effect is used ? I can barely see that he's got : - a "hold the chord" effect - some kind of weird distorsion (or sort of whamy pedal / harmonizer ) Need help, I fell in love with this sound ! Romain

One of the funniest comments I've read in a long time..
This remains the best thing I’ve ever heard somebody do on guitar
I study everyday. He is who I want the Aliens to meet

Kurt is THE jazz guitarist of the 21st century in my opinion
NewBeck
I feel annihilated every time I see/hear him play. This guy's not human.
I find myself back at this video when I need some inspiration. Kurt is just... Incredibly inspiring.
Also a little depressing 😕 ...
How 🤔 ever far you are on the guitar 🎸.

It s an endless yourney.

The opening chords remind me of early Weather Report (Zawinul) soundscapes, but with a contemporary twist. Fascinating.
If you get the opportunity to take his Masterclasses....do not hesitate! Life changing.
Cool-----Only Kurt is capable of music like this----adventurous, brilliant, new and old.
Amazing! Definitely one of the most beautiful and modern sounding Stella by Starlight's I've ever heard.
anyone else getting chills from this?
I saw him playing once with john scofield...I was blown away by them both. This guy has a perfect knoledge of his instrument, I can't even imagine the amount of hours he spent studying in his life...
He dropped out of berklee after first two years. He then toured with Gary Burton, who at the time was the Dean of Berklee. Lol.

En un reportaje contó que a las tres horas de práctica recién calentaba los dedos

I feel like I'm floating in the vast emptiness of space.
i can tell he knows some chords.
+Klemes67 I think he played every chord that ever existed in that song.
+Klemes67 Nice one!
+Klemes67 hm. yea. I was just thinkin the same thing.
Did he play the C one?
I chuckled
An original and creative take on the tune - and solo guitar in general. Using effects and technology to a brilliant musical end.
One of the most beautiful thinga I have ever listened to...
just perfect.

what a beautiful sound this is.
love kurt.
Thank you for this post.
LOve all these wonderful colours... creative, inspirational... Love it.
I always rewatch this video and it's always a great experience since 2014!!!
Before he gets to stella he is playing chords influenced by one of his heros allan holdsworth. when he utilizes some sort of sustain effect. Love Kurt

Almost 30 years of working & still inspired and inspiring... I think he's a genius, like Scofield & Metheny
this probably is the best video on CZcams right now

Apart from the amazing talent--I get more convinced--D'angelico guitars have got a certain mojo.

i come back to this over and over. wish i couldve been in this room. hope a very hq recording of this is released at some point in the future.
So glad I stumbled on this video. One of the best Hog moments I've encountered. So inspiring. Thanks. 😎🤓
Very impressive! A voice completely of his own. 🤗👍

Freaking AWESOME!!!!!
I'm looking for the ukulele tab of this tune, thank you.
I had it but i learned it so quick and easy i got rid of the it.
You'll need a dozen ukuleles for all those polychords
i still keep thinking about this
Incredible.
Really an enormous guitar player.
I wish to see him in Barcelona soon.
The first time i heard this, i was 17 and asked my manager if i could start working an extra day a week so i could get a H.O.G
The first time I heard this I asked for a HUG
And then your manager tell you " why you need to buy hog just go to a supermarket"
Did u bought it?
DUDE I finally bought a HOG and it's 90% because of this video. Been eyeing one since I learned they existed
Kurt is the best!!

Clearly, he has won Stella by Starlight.
That was the longest intro I’ve ever heard… Nine minutes. Absolute brilliance though.

Wow so cool.

great player!

Holdsworthian! Kurt is the master!

aaaargh this is so bíutiful it hurts
Very nice
You know these moments where you miss out on something very important almost five years later? Yeah
Ultra-Impressionistic intro...
It's tougher to play all chords without the resting through a linear solo. I just love it.

We can say that Kirt is not really human, godlike is the appropriate word to describe him
Kurt is definitely a genius.

reminds me of the old joke: Rock guitarrist plays 4 chord to 4 million people, jazz guitarrist plays 4 million chords to 4 people....
There's more than 4 people there. And he only has about 20 chords in here.
Lesser Brother it was a joke man, not exactly specific to the video

someone make madlib flip this to a dope beat
whoa @_@
what effect is that? i must own it!
Siempre lo veo. Y pienso que mucha gente no sabe que se puede lograr esto con una guitarra
Sounds like Holdsworth & Metheny having a nightmare/seizure.
It's quite beautiful actually.

Romain
He’s freezing chords with the H.O.G 2 by Electro-Harmonix
What pedal is he using???
Does anyone how he gets those chords to sing. which pedals?
What guitar is he playing? I know its a d'angelico but which model?
what is the switch on his guitar that allows him to not use the freeze function?
It’s a pedal he uses, he does it with his foot
