Mamamoo in my opinion are the most realistic girl group. As in their not afraid to be themselves and make their views heard

"realistic" is really accurate to describe Mamamoo. Just from their work to their "craziness" behavior they really let it out not faking it.. Not cover or trying to be cool and cute.
Mamamoo purposely built an irreverent identity and image from the start. The group suffered and still suffers a lot of hate, but they have talent, professionalism and a huge fan base that loves them precisely because they are who they are, real.
I really love the group.
But be careful, don't talk like this is a simple decision for a girl group, don't talk like all gg's have the full freedom to be authentic and they just aren't because they don't want to. Only those who really follow the universe of girl groups know what this segment goes through in the kpop industry.
The girl who spit is Hwasa. She was a lot criticized for her looks and her outfits,but she didn't stop to wear and do what she wants! What a woman!!
We can all agree that HIP is The song when Mamamoo said enough is enough specially for Hwasa.
"i don't know if it was a feminism thing" yes....yes it was. mamamoo has always been about both female empowerment and self-empowerment. you'll see both themes in the majority of their music. they've all gone through quite a lot to get where they are, from being passed over by multiple agencies as trainees for 'not being pretty enough' to being called 'that ugly group' when they debuted to the constant criticism absolutely anything and everything they do gets (mostly from men. most of the praise they get is from women)... and partially because of that they started with these empowerment anthems, telling people that women can do anything men can, that you're perfect the way you are and to ignore the snide crap others often have to say
the song itself is interesting in that it's got two themes at once... the first one is, as mentioned, the self-empowerment and female empowerment, the other being sort of a diss track to the haters, the media and others that just look for anything they consider 'controversial' (or completely make stuff up to *make* it a controversy). pointing out their obsession and how the things they purport to care about make no difference at all, just to let others be themselves. that's another theme you'll start seeing in some of their more recent music, especially some of the solo work (esp hwasa, who i'll go a bit more into shortly)
the one girl you kept talking about is hwasa, who is known for her fierce and commanding image onstage but is actually a huge softie when not performing. instead of being the leader, she's actually the group's maknae. but nearly everyone has her and solar (the one you mentioned with 'oh, here's her singing part'. with the pink and black hair in some segments and a boxer in others) reversed when they first meet this group, thinking hwasa is the leader and solar is the youngest
hwasa helped write this song (they all participate in much of their music, whether it's writing lyrics, composing music or even just bouncing ideas off the producers/songwriters they work with), which is why the parts about her outfit fashion were here... just like you mentioned, knets and some kpop fans constantly go crazy over anything and everything she wears, going 'how dare a woman wear something like that!' or 'what does she think she's doing'. two big ones were her wearing a sports bra at the airport, knets and the media went wild 'she's wearing a bra! not a shirt! what's going on!' and then a few days later, she wore a shirt with no bra and... they went crazy about that, too.
early on, while the whole group got crap for being themselves and not trying to act (or look) like is typically expected of girl groups, hwasa got the worst of it, by far. being called fat, ugly, 'too dark' and so much more. and, sadly, she still gets the most warrantless hate out of the whole group (who also get some of the most hate among kpop groups in general. it's beyond ridiculous, esp since so much is just totally made up crap people don't bother to try and fact check). but in recent years, she's also become one of korea's it girls... anything she's seen eating gets sold out across the whole country, anything she wears or even mentions gets totally sold out (despite people also complaining 'how dare she wear something like that!"), any music she's part of pretty much instantly tops the charts and often stays there for ages... hell, after a tv show where she showed off the car she bought herself after she got her drivers license, that car model had a huge spike in sales... and she's even managed to sell out music books because people saw she was trying to learn to play the recorder...
back to the mv... the universes thing was a sort of 'what if mamamoo were not mamamoo', where they were showing roles they thought suited them, also done as a way to celebrate the women who do them, esp since many of these roles are in male-dominated industries. solar was a princess, a boxer, a rock star. moonbyul (the rapper) was a choreographer, a director and the ceo of a music label (that solar's rock star was under. and wheein's indie artist applied to). wheein (the one with blue hair) was an activist, a painter/artist and an indie musician. hwasa was a musical actress, a mother and the president of a country.
as for the 'what if we were not mamamoo' aspect, they firmly believe that even if they never formed mamamoo they were destined to meet and become friends (it helps that wheein and hwasa have actually been best friends since middle school). they've got an entire song on this album all about that idea, called "destiny"
all four members are also solo artists, each having made or broken records with their releases and their solo music is so different from each other and their work as mamamoo, each one is able to showcase her musical preferences. also, moonbyul, the rapper, gets to show how well she can sing. and we're still waiting for official releases that show how well solar and wheein can rap (hwasa is already known for doing both since she's been vocalist/rapper for the group since the beginning. she just doesn't rap nearly as much these days). they really are a multi-talented quartet where each member can do everything, including the behind the scenes stuff like writing lyrics, composing music, producing music and even choreographing (moonbyul, for example, choreographed their debut song)

HIP was actually a song they wrote to get back at their haters and the people criticizing their way of dress, mostly Hwasa’s
The girl you liked so much with the short black hair was Hwasa and she’s not the leader, but actually the maknae! It surprises a lot of people because she’s got so much charisma
The main rapper (with the purple hair) is Moonbyul and she’s known for her androgynous styles and concepts as well as her talent in rap and singing. She writes all her verses and is considered to be one of the best rappers in the kpop industry
The leader of mamamoo is Solar (blond haired boxer) and she’s a powerhouse vocalist. Absolutely incredible, she gets a lot of the high notes in songs
Finally, Wheein (blue hair) is one of the most talented idols of her generation and is not only a top tier vocalist, but a top tier dancer. She’s known as the backbone of Mamamoo

the "panties sticking out" line reffers to all the crappy/hateful comments that Hwasa (the queen you've been losing your mind over) has gotten after showing up at the airport with boxers sticking out of her jeans - actually the outfit that she's wearing in the mv at that point is recreation of that airport fit

They are NOT you’re typical girl group. They have important and relevant issues to discuss. Much like how BTS usually has importance in their lyrics. However, they all have a wicked sense of humor.

I wouldn’t say so underrated. I would say they have the most respect by kpop fandoms. Everyone can agree even if they don’t stan that their vocals are top tier in third gen.
Nailed it on first view. Glad you mentioned the re-definition of Hip - MMM says hip means being yourself rather than being trendy and following the crowd. The alternate universes showed them living various lives as unusual women, all deserving of respect, and although of course they meant to encourage women to do their own thing they expanded the message to include everyone who's outside the norm by including the drag musicians in Solar's glam rock band. Hip is a combo of a message song with a diss track mocking their haters. Hip is from 2019 btw, rather than last year.
Here's some background on the incidents mentioned in the lyrics:
The girl you like is Hwasa, who's the maknae rather than the leader (Solar). Hwasa co-wrote the lyrics, which refer to several fashion controversies involving her. For Mamamoo's show-stopping performance at the 2018 MAMA award show she wore a red-hot vinyl outfit that people criticized for being too sexy. It caused enough of a stir that their label (RBW) even issued a statement saying they didn't see anything wrong with what she wore and clarified that the girls chose their own clothing (the stylists were getting crucified). Hwasa said nothing but for MMM's next award show performance she wore lingerie, as if to say "You thought the MAMA outfit was too sexy? How do you like this one, bitches?" She was also criticized for wearing a crop top that resembled a sports bra to the airport. Again she didn't reply to the criticism and instead the next time MMM went to the airport she didn't wear a bra under her top. That's our girl. On Mamamoo's very first album Hwasa wrote and performed a solo song called I Do Me. Naturally.
Speaking of solos, all the members have successful solo careers on the side. They're the only group to have all members chart on Billboard as solo artists while the group is still active. Must-see MVs by Hwasa include Twit, Maria and LMM (Lost My Mind). The latter two songs also address the hate she constantly receives and are two of the best songs of 2020.
Rapper Moonbyul is an equal partner in MMM rather than an afterthought who gets an occasional rap verse shoe-horned into a song to give her something to do. Moonbyul has always written her own rap verses and is one of the most highly credited female lyricists in kpop. She also sings on some songs and has always provided the low voice when they harmonize.
Now that you've seen Mr Ambiguous and Hip I think you'll want to see why Mamamoo is generally considered to be the best female vocal group currently active. There are two live medleys that are good sampler intros to their amazing live vocals: the Dingo Killing Voice vid and the Immortal Songs Medley, which was filmed at a concert in 2017. Both are ok for reactions since they're not from tv shows.

I absolutely love Mamamoo they're my ultimate girl group, they're so unapologetically mature and honest with great lyrics and beats. Hwasa had an issue with an airport outfit previously and that must've been inspirational for this. Moonbyul is such an amazing rapper, I said what I said.

So the one you immediately noticed in the beginning is Hwa Sa, she’s the maknae. Moonbyul was the one rapping the most, but she’s also got some smooth lower vocals as well. Solar was the one dressed as a boxer and in the monochrome outfit with the band. Wheein was the one playing the drums in some shots. Mamamoo likes to try new things and aren't afraid to be adventurous. Solar covered BTS' Fire in a concert and she ripped her shirt off. She mentioned the male idols do it all the time, so why not her? Their videos relating to BTS' Blood Sweat and Tears are funny.

Nailed it on your first view. This song was inspired when Hwasa (the "leader"-like member you pointed out) got shit for not wearing the bra to the airport and then getting more shit for wearing "only a bra" (it was a bra-like top, I forget the name rn) soon after. (Or maybe it was the other way around, idr.) Actually, Hwasa is the youngest member, but she has continually gotten the most shit throughout her life because she strays from the typical Korean beauty standard. (She is a beautiful woman.)
Mamamoo as a whole are extremely versatile artists. Much like BTS (although obviously to a lesser extent), they came from a small company and were the first group to debut under RBW. Used to do their own stylings, busking, and more until their hard work bore fruit. The girls are highly involved in their music as well (composing and lyric writing). The empowerment and self-love is important to them given how all of them struggled with not being "very idol-like." (Totally not true.) All 4 members are solo artists, and each of them are very individualistic, which is why it's great that they work so well together as a group too.
By the way, their rapper (Moonbyul) actually originally auditioned as a vocalist and was accepted as such--she was changed to a rapper some months before debut, and it was a hard hit to her vocal confidence in the early years. Her previous vocal coach was sure she'd debut in a group as a main vocal...which kind of speaks to the vocal strength of her members. She has thankfully been exploring singing more. If you're down to check out a good pop/R&B ballad, check out her solo "Absence" (czcams.com/video/NXnP06Ial08/video.html) or her cover of "Trying to Say Goodbye" (czcams.com/video/ZjhctbeifW0/video.html). (The latter is probably a better demonstration of her singing, but the former is such a groove lol.)
Mamamoo's voices are often described as follows (though not limited to these):
Solar - Power vocalist (She's the leader btw lol)
Moonbyul - Rapper, deeper tone
Wheein - "Backbone" and has the healthiest/best technique; "honey" vocals
Hwasa - Very stylistic (aspiration), raspy/jazzy

This is one of my fav songs from them, they are great. You should check mamamoo killing voice if you want to hear them singing live and the do short versions of several songs, they're all great.
Regarding to the people who tell you to chill all I can say is that I relate to that a lot, because people used to tell me that as well, and I know how frustrating it is. Is okay to show emotions. (it seems stupid to say this but I feel like is needed). Its okay to be excited about things. We are not robots. And this is your channel, you can do react the way you want to and that is okay too
