Inside America's For-Profit Bail System

- The US is the only first-world country that commercializes bail. The for-profit industry rakes in more than $2 billion annually in revenue. Most criminal defendants can't pay the full bail amount and must either stay in jail or pay a 10 percent fee to secure a bond, which they won't recoup even if found not guilty.

The USA is a business.. it's not a country
The American dream is great... if you're still asleep.
Truth!
Tell me which country isn't pretty much the same
Life is business...
Some Won more like a mafia! Tax you from the day you're born to the day you die; on everything you make to everything you spend!
The real hero in this video is that old man telling you the truth on those free tee shirts. Bless him. Hope he’s doing well!
True but also he understands that if there was a better system he would do something else. he admitted to it in the end when he said he’d become a 12 o’cloc boy
Yeah, he’s an exceptional guy.
Hopefully, with technology giving people a voice unlike anytime in history. People having more access to information ~ and real world examples, be it historically or currently. It’s only a matter of time until a new~better system is created.
Realistically only a handful of people have dramatically & directly influenced each society/ humanity.
Previously you’d have to be born in power, like King Sejong ( A Korean king, that created the Korean language, and had its people and kingdom (government) drop “Chinese”)
Or be born at the right time,
Alan Turning ~ The father of problem solving computing. ( Who wouldn’t have received funding nor the team if it wasn’t for WW2. And because of his sexual preference, would’ve never been taken seriously.
Or, you’d need to have to extraordinary willpower & foresight, such as MLK.
Even though he’s gotten a lot of flack, Dennis Rodman impacted the world, by going to a closed country. It may have been minor, but no one else did what he did.
Sadly, scumbags like Steve Jobs greatly slowed down the process of human society. Forcing so much $ to be wasted unnecessarily for private gain. Most of the great minds in computing & programming, saw it as a great equalizer.
Hopefully there is someone out there, wealthy and powerful enough, to see how greatly society could benefit from making devices, cheaper, more accessible. So more ideas can get out there. ( Bill Gates has done an incredible amount of work globally.)
If a business, decides to design smart phones, laptops, computers, to be cheaper, easily upgradable, that would be a huge business. Which ‘could’ lead to better solutions, options being found, supported & taken more seriously.
came here comment and say glad others are paying attention!
Damn right!
Big facts
The public defender seems like a very caring, compassionate man. The way he talks you can tell he is a very kind person, nice to see someone like that taking up such an important role.
So all someone has to do is talk to you in a gentle voice and you assume they're saintly?
Good luck in the real world.
I lost hope in the justice system. I went to court for the first time ever in my life at 24 years old. I was issued a citation to appear in court because the police said I fled from an area of crime I was never visiting/loitering. I went to court they offered a plea of guilty for 8 days. I pleaded not guilty. I sat and sat in jail for at least a month. I had my own place to live and gainfully employed in Seattle. Caught the ferry from kidnap/kitsap county to king. I was so tired of rotting in jail not hearing in anything. I had bills to pay, wearing on my mind, I kept to myself because I had nothing in common with the inmates. Even the guards knew this is not a violent person so they moved to a more relaxed pod. I saw people in there for murder and violent offenses and two weeks later they were sentenced. Me nothing felt abandoned. I called my public defender and said I want to plea guilty. From that phone call two days later I was out, Nothing I could do. I got home looked at my ferry ticket, my work schedule and my paperwork incident pissed off and crying because it was proof I wasn’t even there. Can’t flee from a crime when I’m in different city at work. If the cops came over and they want me for a crime then here’s a proof of perjury. 48 years old today and still my only charge. For the first couple of years out I was scared to interact with the public, I even wanted to be a sheriff once with wcloe Washington certificate law enforcement. Not so much anymore.

Got arrested, bailed out, hired a lawyer, plead down on time, and did my week in jail. From my misdemeanor arrest to my court date, it took 1.5 years. While in there, I met dudes who have been in jail for weeks or months on misdemeanors, where they had already served the max penalty, because they couldn't pay their bail or they couldn't get in contact with someone to sign for them. The bail system makes absolutely zero sense and only serves to make poor people poorer or to unfairly punish them because they have no other option. At the very least, DAs and judges should agree to release people who have already served the max sentencing guidelines on misdemeanors before they go to court. It makes no sense for someone to get a first time failure to appear or possession, sit in jail for months because they can't make bail, and then get time served for the week or month they actually needed to serve.
It makes no sense to commit crimes, and then complain bail is unfair, or jail sucks.
It is likely "unfair" and certainly sucks...you'd think people would do their best to avoid it!
@@strangevisions5162 what a well-rounded rebuttal to the argument made by the comment. Your parents must be very proud of you.

@@strangevisions5162 Just as well when , only in your country, by the way, so many people are making money out of what is basically a legal racket.
@@strangevisions5162 it would save tax dollars and reduce the amount we spend on inmates BEFORE they are even sentenced. People will serve their "time" well before they see a court date. All that extra time between the max sentencing for an alleged offense, the most someone can serve, and the court date is just taxing the State/City more than needed. Unless they're making money off people's imprisonment 🤔🤔🤔
Putting " innocent until proven guilty" people in jail for non violent crimes should be outlawed anyway. You don't lock someone up and punish them for something you haven't proven they've done yet. It can and does ruin the lives of countless innocent people far too often.
I agree to an extent but even nonviolent offenders do need to be off the street sometimes. We need a better system but I'm not sure the best way to do it.
It’s not the bail bondsman I have a problem with it is judges who set the amount of bail. Another factor is two people who commit the same crime and the bail amount is set to different terms, I have watch judges lower bails to someone they favor over another who they don’t like. Yet I thought judges are not to be bias. You make 90,000 a year your bail set for 5,000 and you make 30,000 a year your bail set for 100,000 thousand. Meanwhile poor pay more for the same crime as an upper middle class pay less. How is a poor person who can barely afford a flight ticket out of this country with a passport, more of a flight risk??? Meanwhile you work for the mayor office? Don’t drink and drive again. Here a slap on your wrist, I’m sure you got 300 dollars in your pocket to pay 5,000 dollar bail. Car title on the line, sign here and just come up with rest of the ten percent. Make sure you go to court.
always found the american justice sytem weird, it really makes no sense how you can get stuck in jail even if you are later found innocent in court just because you couldnt pay your boond, that really doesnt sound like the land of freedom to me.
Where i live they can only put you into Jail untill your court date for 4 Reasons. 1. you tried to flee 2. there is a flight risk 3. a risk of you destroying or supressing evidence 4. a risk of you commiting further serious offenses while out on the street.
The bar for those risks is set really high so usually only people who commited serious crimes have to stay in jail until court.
Everyone else gets a letter of when to apear for your court date, if you dont apear then you get an arrest warrant.

“You can’t jail a poor person when in the same circumstances a rich person would be set free”.....too bad that happens everyday
If you have an adress in Germany they just set you free again and write you a letter when to appear at court. Even when you are sentenced they set you free again and write you a letter when to and where to appear at prison. Putting people in jail is not common. Sure, a suspected murderer is put in jail or people running a system/scheme they could dissolve...

It seems there is a simple way to fix this. Institute a law in the courts--there is either released on your own recognizance or held until trial, depending on the crime and severity and previous record. If a suspect is ROR and then fails to appear, they are then fined when they are caught the amount they would have had to put up for bail before. And they are informed of the fine for non appearance and the judge sets the amount at what would have been the bail hearing. That way the incentive to show up remains, but the poor can avoid paying anything to get out if they show up when they are supposed to instead of skipping out.
These bail bond companies are making a fortune off of other peoples misery. The fact that many states don’t have a bail bond system clearly shows that it is not necessary. I strongly feel that the whole bail bondsman industry should be completely outlawed in the United States. I like what they were doing in one state where they would release people for simple misdemeanor charges, required people with medium level offenses to wear an ankle bracelet, and in the most serious cases, like someone accused of first-degree murder to be held in jail. To require every single person to pay a bail bond company to get out of jail, is absolutely ridiculous. And the one man who is going out into the poor black ghetto passing out T-shirts with his bail bonding company’s name on it is absolutely disgraceful. The only thing worse is that the people there are so ignorant, that they are actually wearing those T-shirts. 🤦🏾♂️

Apparently you have a problem with context. So I'll spell it out for you as I would for a child. The original comment was a joke on the bravery of paying taxes. The last public income tax return of Trump (2016) he only paid $750 despite at the time being on the Forbes 500 list of richest people in America. So yes I have a problem when a "billionaire" pays less in yearly taxes than I do in a month! And I don't care if that person is Bezos, Musk, Gates, or Trump they should all pay their fair share or at least more than a person making less than 50k a year!!! And I could even give Trump a pass on before he was president and was merely a citizen abusing the system to avoid paying taxes but once he was president he only not didn't close those loopholes he made them much bigger to allow for the rich to avoid paying even those meager sums.

WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT RAP MUSIC?
Thomas Dietz - WPM1C it’s easier to respond after hindsight ,to be a productive member of society the opportunities must be available,Also from the age of 7 through to the teenage years are the character shaping stage ,basically you become what your environment impresses upon you .yes we have the innate ability to know right from wrong but when you see your elders being oppressed ,you automatically do not want the same ,it is natural that one is filled with anger .same machine that has indoctrinated a generation needs to invest to undo this anger and low self esteem we have .
Thomas Dietz - WPM1C I agree but that also can be counter productive in the sense that you can be to extreme when doing what you see is a good parent in the times we are in .perefect example is my partner who grew up in a village and achieved all the best grades at school ,horse riding and by the age of 16 she had walked up every mountain in England and by 17 she would set off on adventures in the rural areas with a map and her dog who to her was her best companion. These escapades at a young was not for fun but to free her self from the perfect upbringing her parents and society .Both her parents where ex army and gave her the best upbringing in the form of education and security but they lacked empathy love and how to form social relationships .instead to them success meant a house a good job and money ,but we are not in those times and opportunities are not in abundance like then .As my partner got older she felt she had not seen life outside the perfect world and long story short got herself in a lot of problems when she moved to the city due to her naivety and good nature.Basically in life everything is balance.good bad .light and dark etc. These times effect every body and yes their are opportunities to do good .

Of course, some people in America will never understand this problem with bail bonds. Never mind that the rest of Western Civilization has figured it out and nearly all of the other countries have better crime statistics than we do in America. It is indeed about the money... the money lining the pockets of this immoral industry based on an immoral practice of placing an actual price tag on your freedom. NOBODY should be locked up before they are convicted without some pre-trial system evaluating whether or not they are a risk. Innocent until proven guilty. 'Poor' does not equal 'unworthy of freedom.'
Between the bail bonds industry and civil asset forfeiture, nobody in America can claim our system is not corrupt nor can they claim it is NOT specifically targeting poor people.

She just dismissed that and wanted to hear herself condemn the man for his error, a behavior consistent with someone in love with their position of power over someone else.
Not everybody can easily navigate the screwed up bureaucratic mess that is our 'justice' system. If you have ever been in trouble with the law you would know the complex mess that suddenly consumes your life. A lot of people cannot handle it well or keep it all organized.
Having a drug problem doesn't make him worthless. And missing her little meeting to clear up a warrant when he said he DID go to court instead doesn't make him worthy of getting harmed in prison or having his bail revoked.
She asked him "why did you get arrested" as if being arrested means you are automatically guilty of a crime and thus makes him NOT a good citizen. That is ass-backwards especially given that drug enforcement laws necessarily result in the arrest of people that may not have done any harm to anyone but themselves. In any case, until he is convicted, he is presumed innocent. But she has completely reversed that ideal to support her presuppositions about him based on a procedural error. Her god-complex has gotten out of control and she seems to enjoy yelling like a lunatic because she feels so powerful.
